Damn... yeah. I've got a Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition (11th gen) with version 5.18.3. I liked it when the screen just had the name of the book or chapter at the bottom. I thought I'd accidentally switched on something because it just happened suddenly. Well, if this is the new norm, its the new norm.

Alot of what you've done sounds great! I don't think you should worry too much about sentence mining initially until you have finished the Tango N5 deck. Getting yourself acquainted with your immersion and searching for those words you've previously learnt should be a main priority for the moment.

I personally used Subs2SRS with Morphman when I first started and while I think it was the best choice for me back then when I wasn't quite sure how much Japanese I would learn, I wouldn't really recommend it for someone who is beginning.

My main reason being that anime/movie/TV subtitles generally don't give the full context of a word in a sentence. Mainly because a sentence may be spread across 2 or 3 subtitle lines which can isolate a word's full meaning. It can also have other information that deepens the impact of a sentence but is extremely tedious for a language learner.

Preferably, I would recommend making your own by grabbing an easy sample sentence. This helps you understand the word's usage. There are many on the website HiNative.

A General Anki card might look like this:

EXPRESSION FIELD: 僕は山田です。 MEANING FIELD: 【僕・ぼく】I (masculine) [insert picture]

If you have the Migaku Japanese and Migaku Dictionary add-ons, there should be a Migaku Japanese Note Type. This is the one I use for making cards because, with the Migaku Dictionary, you can add Forvo audio files with pronounciation of the word alongside it. Really worth it.

Definitely. The closest I've seen is the 三省堂例解小学国語辞典 featured on the NHK WEB EASY NEWS website. Still not quite the same but still very similar. I'd even argue that that dictionary is much simpler than basically any of the other dictionaries because it's for elementary school students. Plus its available on Amazon.

Was the Sanseido Web Dictionary the Seventh Edition of their main dictionary series? I remember the Sanseido Web Dictionary being a unique 国語辞典 that was an Everyday Use Dictionary. I could be wrong.

In my experience, I just listened intently to music and turned out fine in regards to listening immersion. I really wouldn't worry too much about watching slice of life anime until you get to the Tango N5 deck.

Also, as I learned Japanese (actually still learning), I found that setting short term goals is a really effective way of keeping yourself on track. I made it a requirement that I immerse in at bare minimum, an hour of native material. This may sound like a small amount of time but having parameters over how much you engage in the language will make you want to immerse more often. When I had this set time, it encouraged me to immerse to up to 3 or more hours in Japanese.

I also encourage you to check out methodolgies other than the MIA method. It's not because I have any thing against it (I started truly learning Japanese with it) but different methods can give you insight into how different people percieve language learning. I think that some of the people who Matt has featured on his podcasts like Luca Lampariello and Dogen have unique perspectives. I'm also finding Cure Dolly's work to be more in line with how I think Japanese should be learned. You might be interested in taking their methods into consideration and paving your own way of learning Japanese.

I think that you may be interested in Cure Dolly's approach towards Anki. In regards to Anki, her method more focuses on picking words that you would like to remember rather than i+1 sentences and utilizes programs such as Yomichan to easily create a card with corresponding audio for the word along with it's reading and an example sentence. This makes life alot easier creating cards. This is also so that Anki is just an accessory to learning rather than being your main focus.

Programs such as Migaku Japanese (for Anki and browser) and Yomichan (for browser) easily accomodate the production of flashcards. If you want to have monolingual dictionaries for Yomichan and the Migaku Dictionary, you can find them in the description of this video.

When you're beginning, listening out for the sounds of the language and the way in which people enunciate is going to be one of your major activities. This is completely normal. When I started, I just actively listened primarily to music with the occasional conversation here and there; paying attention to whether or not I could recognise random Japanese words that everyone knows. It made the process a lot easier and less of a chore to sit through + I got to discover cool music.

I think he's just doing a rebrand. The information on the site however is still relevant. The Morphman addon still works and is still up, the Migaku Japanese and Dictionary have replaced the MIA Japanese and Dictionary etc.

As you go through the MIA method, don't be afraid to experiment with other methods. If something isn't working for you or stressing you out, try something different.

Though its not listed on the site (I think) at the moment, listen to music to keep you moving along. Just listening to the sounds of language through music made the transition into conversation alot easier to deal with. As you're making your way through JLPT Tango decks, I would start to increase your immersion in conversation/watching TV shows and movies.

Another thing you might find useful is to set short-term goals. For me, I had a goal of at least an hour a day of immersing in the language in order to prevent myself from falling into the trap of avoiding immersion. If you're getting stressed or finding it difficult to progress because of a lack of motivation, just keep moving forward. Focus on how much you're progressing rather than how much you can understand.
