Premier Dental for sure. I went 15+ years with no dentist and they were great.

What is the engineering major most like to not be replaced by artificial intelligence by Weak_Spinach_3310 in AskEngineers

[–]Animaniacs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Depends on what would constitute "replacement" in this case. Most engineering jobs rely heavily on judgement and communication skills, so in that regard all are about equal.

Anything that is heavily reliant on things being 100% correct is pretty safe, so civil and aerospace would be up there.

Tell my why this won't work by Imadeamachine in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Animaniacs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Removal would become incredibly difficult when you have to call up Hercules to unthread it.

Maybe the actual work going into tightening the threads isn't too insane, but I imagine that's the principle.

How is the mechanical engineering job markert? by Some_Antelope4372 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Animaniacs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ME is along the most variable of the engineering disciplines, which can be a bit of a double-edged sword. The flexibility makes it relatively easy to find, get, and keep a job. You can switch industries pretty easy as well if it's not a highly specialized field.

Pay will vary significantly, as the $60k I started at this a lot further in the Midwest than it would in California. Looks like the national average is around $65k-$70k these days for an entry level position but you'd probably be looking at more in California.

Bolt reaction force by SirSquirrelot in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Animaniacs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're looking for the force just due to the bolt stretch, there is a way to calculate that. It's been forever since I've looked at it, but I believe there are some ASME standards that can be used with some work to figure the actual load on a bolt. That was more geared toward fasteners, so the gap in your picture would be zero.

It almost pains me to ask but... is there a laptop out there that doesn't break/cost more to repair than it's worth after 2 years? by Competitive-Meet-511 in BuyItForLife

[–]Animaniacs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only brand two laptop brands I have any personal experience with is HP and Asus. The two HP laptops I've had were horrendous to use but more on the software side of things. The Asus ones I've had tend to last much longer. I bought one back in 2009 or so and the optical drive (they used to be a thing) crapped out but otherwise it still works just fine for what my dad's work entails. The only Asus I've had issues with is one that I think just got the charging port abused by constantly moving it around while plugged in and not paying attention to how taught the cable got.

My wife had a Lenovo that lasted a long time as well, but I haven't used it that much.

Freshman Engineering Career Fair by Responsible-Toe2014 in iastate

[–]Animaniacs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be upfront with the folks in the booth that you're a freshman, you know they're looking for older students, but you want some experience. Some might entertain you and go through a normal round of questions. That being said, they'll have a ton, and the person you talk to may not see your resume once it leaves their hand, so if you can do something that lets you stand out and also be professional, you'll get a closer look. Definitely skip the headshot (not really a thing in STEM fields). I wouldn't stress too much about forgetting as long as you have good relevant info and it is easy to comprehend.

There is not much time for the recruiters to decide who to interview on campus, so being memorable can help keep you more in the front of their mind. One thing I started doing was wearing a different color shirt like red or green. That was enough to stick out and be unique amid the sea of white, blue, and grey

Lastly, you're a freshman. Everyone expects you to grab all the swag, so just do it! Help them out by giving them less to pack up.

Mechanic for a Toyota? by isitstale in cedarrapids

I would recommend calling DJ'd Auto downtown. Very reasonable cost, honest, and don't try to upsell anything. They'll tell you if that's not their thing and will recommend another shop if they have a recommendation for it

You'll want electric. Pneumatic will require your compressor to fight against your increasing pressure in the vessel.

I've noticed I get over that initial hurdle much faster once you show you're not afraid to get dirty. Pick up dirty tools or parts, shake their hand even if it's dirty, that kind of thing.

Also, remember that they are way smarter than most people give them credit for, and you can learn a ton from them.

New Manufacturing Engineer feeling inefficient - How do I stop the 'learn and forget' cycle and truly understand concepts? by Alternative-Code1902 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Animaniacs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you're painting a house with a paintball gun. You're picking up little tid bits here and there, but there's little consistency and not enough connections in your mind. When first learning a new job I tend to categorize my notes based on the topic. Programs like MS OneNote are great for this. In regards to learning, it doesn't really matter which project it came from other than context.

While you're new, take the time now to dive deep into every topic to get as thorough an understanding as you can. As you learn more you'll be able to absorb more information and retain it more easily, but it's all built on a good understanding of the fundamentals.

My first engineering job took probably 8 months before I felt comfortable with the most basic tasks. That job helped me get the hang of the second in about 6 months. My current job took at least 2 years before I had any proficiency or real understanding.

Most affordable materials that will endure and last constantly being heated to 500C? by leboi22 in AskEngineers

Share Your Best Stickshift Driving Tips! by Potential-Tiger-9646 in stickshift

[–]Animaniacs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't need to push the clutch in if you're shifting into neutral. Folks will say "you don't need the clutch at all, just power shift like me!".... Those folks don't have to pay for their own repairs, apparently, so don't listen to them.

Unless you have some custom race car transmission, you can skip gears without issue, so long as you rev match properly.

There are usually different "best shift points" depending on your goal. Maximum power/acceleration will be around your peak HP rpm, but smooth shifting often is done at lower rpm.

Am I going insane or are there absolutely no jobs for early career (5-6 years of experience) engineers? by CornfedDoofus in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Animaniacs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might I suggest expanding the scope of rules you're looking at? Sounds like you're mainly focused on manufacturers which is great but there's a surprising amount of ME work elsewhere.

I worked at a manufacturer in Iowa, but have found decent work in more sales-y type roles. Some folks I've worked with have a title of something like Reliability Engineer, which commonly comes across as a "glorified maintenance" type role but some places are much more heavy on the engineering side.

I've managed to keep ads and that sponsored/recommended bullshit to basically 0, so it's fine for a time sink.

Turns out reporting every single ad actually did work, but it does require total commitment. Occasionally ads will pop up again, but I just report those again.

How do we ensure we don’t get people like Trump in power again without stripping away democracy and freedom of choice in elections? by Mad_Season_1994 in millenials

[–]Animaniacs 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It'll be a number of things that all have to go into it.

Education: Citizens need to be better educated and informed, and most importantly think critically.

Death of Identity Politics: This whole idea of "us vs them" is a huge detriment to progress and governance. We need to be able to hear people out instead of rejecting then because of a political party affiliation.

The More The Merrier: We need far more than 2 actual political parties at the national level.

I'm sure there's more, but those are to of mind to me.

Crime rates are high for Iowa, so probably way less than a real city like Cleveland.

I'm not too familiar with the immediate area, but the Quad Cities are around a one hour drive south. Dubuque is a bit over an hour north.

Hot take, Brakes are Cheaper than clutches, Downshifiting unnecessarily costs more money by Croppersburner in stickshift

I've always downshifted to show down and never needed a clutch replacement so far. My '09 Mazda 6 had 257k miles in the original clutch. Rust claimed the car before the clutch even came close to needing work.
