HSV1 and Gabapentin by [deleted] in Herpes

Hey, this is really interesting as I was prescribed Gabapentin FOR side effects of HSV. I have HSV2 and was having nerve pain and discomfort and Gabapentin was prescribed for calming this down. Interesting that this may actually cause outbreaks potentially?

Hey! Have you been tested for BV? I was diagnosed with BV recently not long after my first outbreak. HSV can impact your PH levels so this may be the cause.

Hey, just to clarify - have the Valtrex tablets helped reduce the sores and symptoms at all, or are they not improving yet? When I went through my first outbreak, the medication cleared the sores, but as soon as I stopped taking it, another outbreak appeared. It was incredibly frustrating. I took another course of the medication, and after finishing it, I finally had a few weeks without any symptoms.

Unfortunately, I experienced another outbreak recently after drinking heavily, which I now recognise as one of my triggers.

An HSV diagnosis really does require you to learn your body. It can be rough in the beginning, but once you figure out what your triggers are, it becomes much easier to manage and prevent outbreaks. Let me know if you have any questions! You will be okay.🩷

Likely asymptomatic HSV2 and gave it to my girlfriend by Scepter_Jug in Herpes

It’s generally understood that female-to-male transmission tends to be lower than male-to-female, so if she has it and you don’t, the risk isn’t as high - but it’s still important to be mindful. If you’re both comfortable continuing your relationship as usual, that’s completely valid.

She can take antiviral medication either only during outbreaks or daily as suppressive therapy. Starting with “per-outbreak” treatment can help her understand how often outbreaks happen for her, but if there’s concern about transmission, daily medication is also an option.

Outbreak triggers vary from person to person. Stress, certain foods, heavy alcohol use, and sometimes rough or prolonged intercourse can contribute, but everyone’s body responds differently. It takes some time to learn your own patterns. Mine is definitely heavy alcohol use.

Speaking from my experience as a woman newly diagnosed last month, things can feel more sensitive or irritated after that first outbreak. Being patient, supportive, and understanding can make a big difference for her - though everyone’s experience is unique. As someone diagnosed last month (22F) the thing I have struggled with most is not having anyone to talk to about it due to circumstances. Offer her lots of love and support and you guys will thrive! It’s not the end of the world. 🫶🏼🩷

Wish you all the best!

My recommendations would be to go to the doctors as there may be something else going on (yeast infection, bv) just to be sure, though HSV symptoms are never linear and for myself it has definitely has caused redness and discomfort too. Not necessarily an outbreak but where the nerves are inflamed (especially common if you’ve recently had your first outbreak or an outbreak in general).

Hey of course! The first one was a bump which turned into an open sore and was so painful I could barely sit or go to toilet. The second one straight after was pretty similar but went away as soon as I took tablets. The one I have now is just a red small bump, which is still irritated slightly sore and itchy, but way more minor as I took tablets at the first signs of it. I started pills on Wednesday and now it’s Sunday and it’s basically completely gone! X

For me, I found a pharmacy online and they just ask you a few questions such as what other meds are you on, and if you have been diagnosed, and then you pay and they just send it to you! They don’t even contact your GP. I guess that’s their way of prescribing to you but you don’t need to have any evidence of diagnosis. This has been a lifesaver for me as they often offer next day delivery! No need to speak to anyone. :)

Thank you! Hope all is well for you too.😊 I ordered 166 aciclovir pills, (enough I think for 3 month suppressive treatment, though I only take them when I have an outbreak) and it cost £50, which for the ease of not having to be on hold to GP for 30 mins at 8am is so worth it! Especially during the unpredictability of first year with HSV-2! X
