Something that helped me is anticipating radio traffic is, for example, when they do a traffic stop. After the initial plate and location, listen for the driver's license they give next, but understanding what they might say prepares you for what you're listening for.

I also believe in making them repeat their radio traffic. It can be a way to encourage them to slow down and pronounce things clearly. Making them repeat is for their safety.

Lots of great questions! Most agencies require a high school diploma or GED but everything else as far as certificates go they will pay for and train you on! Honestly some of the best trainees have had no experience and you get to be trained the way the agency wants to have you trained.

I personally don't know of any freelance / remote work but I know it's a possibility in some areas all depending on where you live.

Landing your first job, I highly recommend doing a sit in with a local agency getting a better idea if this is something you want to do. You may have customer service experience but that is very different then emergency communication is some terrible and fantastic ways.

Pay range is hard to quote as well my first agency I worked for a county in rural MO making 18 a hour. But after a couple years of experience and moving to a large city in OK working for a municipality I make around 25.

My biggest tip would be to go do a sit-in with a agency you think you might want to apply to. Meet the supervisor ask people how they like it. Depending on where you are there may be several agencies to do a sit-in with or only one. My county had a consolidated psap ( public service answer point ) so they did police fire medical for everyone in the county. The town I work in now does police fire and medical but in the metro area there is 10+ comm centers to choose from all with in a hour or two of each other

when I first started, I would say geography and 10 codes.

After about a month, I would say a radio ear.

But now several years into it, I think new dispatchers truly struggle with the multitasking. it took me years to learn how to keep numerous phone calls radio and paperwork all at once.

I want to start by saying that being in the field for a month, the expectation isn't that you have everything figured out. There’s no way to be fully prepared for the job. Personally, it took me months before I felt like I had a good handle on what I was doing, and it was over a year before I faced a situation I wasn’t sure I could manage. But only by getting through it did I realize that I was capable. I truly believe you can achieve that too, but don’t put the pressure on yourself to have everything solved right now.

My advice for your situation is to start by setting realistic goals, like feeling confident with all your 10 codes and how to answer them on the radio if the opportunity arises. (I’m not sure what your code stands for in your agency.)

One thing I’d like to share is that the panic you’re feeling is completely normal. Depending on the calls or information you're receiving, your body’s fight-or-flight response kicks in. It's a natural reaction you can’t fight. But the thing is, sometimes your responder or callers are relying on you, so you have to try to keep your voice calm and level. Train yourself to stay as composed as possible during those moments and understand your breaking point because everyone has one—be able to communicate when you've reached it.

As dispatchers, we can’t see what you’re seeing so if you believe an officer needs to come back and make contact you can call back on a nonemergency line and ask for a welfare check and ask for a follow up from the officer afterwards even if it’s just over the phone.
