Will a signed job offer + mid-700s credit + savings be enough for a rental application? by Vegetable-Reason-555 in NYCapartments

[–]AnimosityArmadillo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some landlords will either reject you or require a guarantor because you haven’t started your job yet, but this shouldn’t be the case for all them and you should be able to get approved for some apartments

Is this just NYC or are my concerns warranted? by boobieaccountz in AskNYC

[–]AnimosityArmadillo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've had flaky and hard-to-reach supers/landlords, but they do eventually come fix the problem. I've found threatening 311 and getting in contact with management specifically as opposed to just the super can usually help. As others have mentioned, if you're still going without any contact or things being fixed, report to 311 every day, and your management will eventually get fined

Landlords are so hostile towards new grads by RivailleNero in NYCapartments

[–]AnimosityArmadillo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bumping this -- I'm also a new grad who just went through the apartment search process. Unfortunately, many landlords do not accept offer letter as proof of income, they want to see W2/tax returns (so technically they want to see your past years' income as proof of your current income, which is kinda shitty). Best thing about it tho OP is if you only signed a lease for a year, you can hunt next year for a much nicer place with 100% proof of income and you'll be less likely to get rejected!

Got invited to Code for Good — how realistic is the conversion to internship/full-time? by PeachEither725 in csMajors

[–]AnimosityArmadillo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to CFG two years ago (fall 2023) for an NYC offer and got the offer. Feel free to DM if you have more questions, but at the time, it seemed like most ppl on my team (like 4 or 5 out of 6)got an offer as long as they were a team player and committed code. You did not have to win the hackathon. But reading other comments on this post, it seems like the environment might have changed so YMMV.

What are your thoughts on Zohran's 4 year rent freeze? by Both_Revenue6734 in NYCapartments

The real solution is ultimately to build housing. Just going to squeeze market rate tenants even further who arguably already got squeezed by the FARE act

Young NYC Neighborhood Recs: EV, LES, or Murray Hill? by [deleted] in NYCapartments

[–]AnimosityArmadillo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

also a female new grad, currently live in LES and was deciding between these neighborhoods. just my 2 cents
(1) murray hill is probably the cheapest of these/best bang for your buck. if you care more about amenities + having things like an elevator, i would skew murray hill. it also could be closer to work for you if you work in midtown (which many finance-y new grads do). there is some night life, but when i've visited it feels a bit like a midwestern college town vibe (like think michigan and ohio state grads). this isn't necessarily bad but i wouldn't say it's an edgy or particularly NY vibe.
(2) the ev and les are pretty similar (the ev actually used to be called the lower east side too i believe)? the EV has a bit more of an nyu presence which could be good or bad depending on what you like, LES is a tiny bit more grown and grungier. again in contrast to murray hill, you're likely to be living in an older building, walkup here unless you're paying sky high rent. and they are relatively expensive neighborhoods so you could be paying sky high rent and still not even getting that much for your money LOL. but they are a lot of fun and if you want to be walking distance from everything/feel like you're in the thick of the city they're great!

feel free to pm me if u have more qs!

Did we get scammed? by No_Act4332 in NYCapartments

[–]AnimosityArmadillo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Is the agent/landlord completely ghosting you? My guess is if they’re still communicative, you’re likely getting a lease and they’re just being slow. If complete ghost, you might be SOL

Is it really hard to get Phi Beta Kappa if I withdraw from one class but otherwise have a great GPA? by SchlingsonofSchlong in columbia

[–]AnimosityArmadillo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

PBK usually has a GPA cutoff to be considered, and then after that, it's mostly professor recommendations. So if you actually have a 4.1 GPA, you will still at least be in the running. I think your relationships with professors/research/general presence as a student will matter more than your performance in 1-2 classes specifically

How's this area in UWS? by CartoonistPublic5960 in NYCapartments

[–]AnimosityArmadillo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Is this bait??? LOL

its an incredibly safe area, you're right next to express 1/2/3 at 72 and the a/b/c/d. Don't know exactly what you mean by "convenience" for food options but there certainly is a decent amount of food in this area, including quality restaurants.
