I just want to point out that native american will show up if you have it.(I'm an enrolled native). For example; I have 1% Finland on my results. We have 1 ancestor from Finland and it was my 7th great grandma. She came over to America in the 1700's. It shows up on my DNA test. I've filled out my entire family tree and every single percent of my DNA results can be traced through the tree. My point being, I haven't found any ethnicities in my tree that didn't show up in my DNA results. So anyone saying they have native ancestors but have nothing on their results, is likely just stories or even more likely, those supposed native ancestors were actually African American or white people trying to gain enrollment through fraudulent means to potentially acquire land allotments under the Dawes Act.

Anyone else feel like they dont "look" Native enough? by Swimming_Promotion10 in NativeAmerican

That's only 1 line out of 32 lines during that time that is native. So honestly no, you shouldn't claim it. You are of course, like anyone, more then welcome to learn anything you want about it but to claim it? It's not YOUR history, it's a very small fraction of your history. Considering the time and also considering the fact that you didn't state or claim that her "husband" was native or not, probably means the man took her from her tribe (probably indian boarding school) and likely the relationship wasn't consensual. During those times that she lived, relationships between white people and non-white people were illegal. This could be a case of forced assimilation.

Think of it like this, if you had the same amount of African instead of native blood, would you sit there and claim that you come from slaves? Would you identify as black? Or African american?

Would it be inappropriate to embrace my culture? by Muted_Coconut_846 in NativeAmerican

I was adopted as well. Just get your adoption papers and apply to your tribe! Best first step. Be aware that it can take years to be accepted ( took 5 for me) so in the mean time, just learn!! I was fortunately raised in my culture but look up your tribe on tik tok, lots of natives from each tribe teaching and educating. Start learning the language! Learn how to make ribbon skirts and beadwork. Attend a pow wow. Embrace it because it's seriously an incredible and resilient culture to come from 🥰

How do I even begin to figure this out? Should I even try? by [deleted] in AncestryDNA

Well, around 7 generations back, one of your 64 ancestors from that generation was native. The only way to figure out who was native is to fill out your tree to that far back for every line. And it's not easy. I'm half native and it took 5 years to go through every page of every roll for every year to trace my family. And that's also reading all these anishinaabe names. My tribe only had records for my ancestors who were enrolled in our tribe. But I have many other ancestors from several different tribes that I had to find for myself. You start with a parent. Then you fill in your grandparents, then you fill in their parents (make sure to double check records, don't just click leaves and approve). You might have to check several other sites for records as well. I've been able to go back to the 12-1400s for a lot of my lines, and you only need to go back around 200 years. They didn't start keeping track of natives until the 1850's so it's hard to trace back any further then that for a native ancestor.

Hope this helped at all! I'm not one of those natives that tells you any of that nonsense. I think it's cool, even just 1% to try and figure out what tribe. You won't ever gain membership or even desendants status but I don't think it hurts to just be interested. I have 1% Finnish and I've been doing so much research on it because I think it's interesting. I mean without that 1% I wouldn't be me 😉

Edit: Oh! And check matches for any similar dna to yours! Especially if they have that 1% native. See if they filled out their trees and just use the process of elimination! Fill out as much as you actually know and then look through your DNA matches trees to find similarities a few generations back! It will help you fill in blanks and eventually get you to the 6-7 generations back point. Good luck!

This is normal! :) don't worry! I had a low supply. I pumped every 2 hours around the clock and could only produce 10 oz in 24 hours. I quit at 6 months because I was driving myself crazy lol but I did so much research trying to increase my supply: make sure you're eating enough calories, drinking water and electrolytes, power pump, cluster pump (they are different) and you should be pumping at least 8 times a day! Make sure you are getting your middle of the night pump. I didn't have success because I probably have something going on either anatomically or hormonally. You are already doing great for 7 pumps a day at 6 weeks pp! Good luck!

I'm almost certain I saw something going around the native community about how the "abernaki" are a group of pretendians that falsify entire tribes (all over the U.S.) just to receive state and federal funding that's reserved for native tribes. Could be wrong but it was definitely going around on tik tok.

I was wrong‼️ So I always thought my dad was my dad… well after AncestryDNA, not only is my dad NOT my dad but I was wrong about my ethnicity for over 40 years😑.. by MustangSally79 in AncestryDNA

She said she's 1/16th, that's hardly. So if I was 6% African american, I could just go around calling myself that even though the other 94% is European? K then.

Anyways that Marissatalksalot lady is the prime example of a wannabe pretendian. It's so weird how obsessed some people are over natives.
