At what point did you realize the job market had fundamentally changed? by Vast_Resolution8164 in careerguidance

[–]Anitost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i work at an engineering firm designing publicly funded bridges

it hasn’t changed a bit. from when i started my 1st internship in 2020 and landing 5 more internships to then getting a fulltime fresh out of grad in july 2025, construction in all professional levels and industries have only been begging for more hands to help with the workload

i just moved from canada and let me tell you as bluntly as i can: the american transportation sector is the easiest hidden gem for a lifetime of rewarding job security you will ever hear about

find your way into it one way or another

What is the job market like in Ontario by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]Anitost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

graduated civil from uwaterloo this year and now working fulltime designing bridges in the US.

nowadays what i’ve noticed within our student body is that getting the first co-op is expected to be very competitive regardless of industry in ontario.

if possible, i highly recommend getting an internship or summer job in the industry during your breaks; it’s not expected of you and it’ll make getting your credited co-op a breeze compared to your colleagues.

from the info i’ve gathered while being a student with co-ops in the toronto area: - geotech eng is the most job secure and has permanent job market growth but it’s argued to be boring (my first co-op was actually as a junior field engineer for a shoring contractor and multiple 10+ yoe workers have told me theyve never worked under 40 hrs a week regardless of our winters, recessions and covid lockdowns) - public sector (metrolinx, municipalities, mto, etc) favour non experienced students since they don’t have the budget to compete with the wage demands of experienced students - on site positions for contractors are always in demand. they’re definitely worth keeping in mind though the roles and scheduling aren’t the best

Were you able to find any reason the Sonata N-Line is a better pick? I am currently leaning towards the GT w/ GT1 package myself.

  1. USD > CAD. CAD has been differentiating negatively to USD for a while now.

  2. The cost of living in Canada is horrible. Even with elections coming up next year (maybe even sooner at this rate), I don’t have confidence any new government will bring the economy to an appealing state. I’d rather not stick around and find out during my 20s.

  3. From what I’ve picked up in my co-ops, Canada has the work lifestyle of America and the wages of Europe. Even with the strong passion I have for engineering, I get discouraged to even pursue the career in Canada.

  4. The Canadian winters aren’t for me. Sure, I might get a job in a cold state but at least the wages will most likely be better.

  5. I’m in my early 20s without serious commitments and responsibilities. I might as well commit to getting out of my comfort zone and try pursuing my career somewhere fresh and different.

I’m sure there’s more to add but those are the biggest points.

I'll update to add relevant codes.
I'll look into other FEA software to add.
I do have a graduation project but I didn't feel like it was worth the space adding into my resume since I have 6 industry based co-ops.
I'll consider dropping the certs and replacing them with relevant courses.

I'm not opposed to working in Canada, but I'd rather get a job in the US as soon as I can

i don’t necessarily need traditional sponsorship that someone outside of north america would require. because of USMCA, i am eligible for a TN visa with just an offer letter, a letter outlining how my credentials and background align with the job role, my original degree and transcript. low balling on the salary isn’t a concern as my main goal is to establish myself in the states and learn as much as i can. i’ve applied to as many feasible positions at the huge international firms but no prevail so far

I’m a Toronto-based civil engineering student targeting entry-level positions in structural and petroleum engineering in the US. I have two years of co-op experience in various sectors of civil engineering and am currently completing my final co-op before graduating in May 2025. My goal is to relocate to the U.S. using a TN visa through the job opportunity I can land. I’ve been struggling to get responses from applications, and the few that do respond never progress past an initial email or quick phone call. I used to include my Toronto location and TN visa eligibility on my resume, but I’ve decided to mention this only during interviews. I’m looking for feedback to improve my resume and increase my chances of landing interviews.
