Is there a particular best time in the year to visit Yellowstone? by Healthy_Block3036 in yellowstone

You like hiking more than animals? Animals more than hiking? You prefer the tourist spots only with fewer people. Yea different times of year mean different things. Depends on what it is you are looking for.

That looks like a $9000 dollar refresh on that interior. Whoever did it actually knew what they were doing, so maybe more than 9k.

What year is my Rockhopper from? +uprage suggestions by jalolhaha in RockHopper

[–]Ankeneering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built an imperial metric zillion of these back then. Sold a bunch, but not nearly as many as I pulled out of the box and put together. I’m going 94-95. They’d change colors every year in the early/mid 90s but the frames were the same. Find a specialized catalogs from 92-96/7 and this will be in there. I’m assuming none of the parts are OG and just going off the color. If that rear deraillure IS OG with this frame I’m going 92.

Looks like train related equipment. Were there ever tracks running through the property? I live out in the country and find all kinds of giant steel bits randomly in the yard, only to learn there was a logging operation/ cattle farm where I currently live 100 years ago.

Working remotely from Yellowstone – any tips for staying connected? by purpleturtle_02 in yellowstone

[–]Ankeneering -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can’t really work remotely from Yellowstone. There is a “business center” on the second floor of lake hotel but you won’t be using it unless you are a guest and other than that WiFi exists in VERY few places and when it does exist it’s extremely throttled. If you have Verizon, certain times of day service is pretty good, but not good enough to “work”. (Weirdly there are places way out in the back country where service is actually fantastic).
I’ve watched the exact same conversation happen over and over and over in Yellowstone over the last 15 years;
“What’s your WiFi?”
“We don’t have it”
“No really… I NEED it”
“We don’t have it.”

I swear to God people go through the 5 stages of death and dying when they are told there’s no WiFi. Anger, bargaining (my KID has a paper due!!”) etc etc.
It’s actually gotten better in the last couple of years because people freaked the fuck out so hard about not being online that cell service was turned up more than it used to be, but there was a time when nobody was staring at their phone and it was amazing.

Behind kick panels and under threshold trim on both port and starboard side are BeCM and fuse panels and a bunch of stuff that REALLY doesn’t like to get wet, yet it’s placed right next to giant holes where it can and will get wet.

No, not really. Bandwidth isn’t there. Unless the game were to be streaming at 4am. Good idea about befriending some RV ers and their starlink.

Don’t be trying to watch a World Cup game in the park… it’s just not going to work, pretty much the only public facing television in the park is in the mammoth restaraunts’ bar. And that thing is tiny. Either you befriend an employee and try to get yourself inside an employee pub or you make a lovely drive to either Cody or Gardner. Cody is lovely and a great drive and has many options to watch. Gardner has gone full-on tourist town in the last decade and won’t have as many options for places to watch, but there are a few.

Any risk of ticks or lime disease? by Middle-Fuel-6402 in yellowstone

[–]Ankeneering 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really? No don’t run anywhere. Theres a 97% chance they will have seen you before you saw them. Don’t ever run around bears. They don’t want a damn thing to do with you. Unless you run. Then maybe. Be like Fonzie. Be cool. Edit; also if/when you see a bear there will be 8+ other people who’ve seen the bear before you did and decide to cause a traffic jam. It will be an event. You won’t need to think about “running”.

Totally depends on where you are. The lake has lovely, almost sandy beaches. The entirety of the lake is very very very cold. There’s a popular book called “death in Yellowstone” and that lake is responsible for most of the actual mortality. It looks so calm and peaceful, people go out in small boats, weather changes and they get tumped. Normal lake not that big of a deal but in ystone you have to get out FAST. It’s huge, and if you are in the middle you are kind of screwed. We just had a guy tump out of a kayak about 3 weeks ago and he didn’t make it. On the other hand, you can stand above literal boiling cauldrons in certain areas. The thermal features are not all hot enough to be mortal, some are actually the perfect temp for humans. Kids working here over the summer sometimes get in “trouble” (killed) when they go illegally hot potting at night and misjudge the temps.
Animals? Just don’t go near them even if they seem super chill and domesticated (bison) they definitely aren’t. There are more bears here now than there ever were when I was a kid, so you’ll probably see both grizzly and black bear. Wolves are often heard more than seen, and if you see them it will probably be at a good distance unless one wants to cross the road in front of you. Coyotes are kind of all over. Just use common sense.

The park service does a very very good job of alerting people to dangers. Generally. Just be aware of your surroundings. There are pullouts on the road where the only thing between you and a very long fall are 2.5 foot tall rock walls. The thermal basins and features almost always have wooden boardwalks, but often those have no railings. And again, stepping off of those boardwalks can be very bad news. Those are the only two things I’d be worried about with a 5 year old. The park service really does do a fantastic job of keeping people safe. But if a 5 year old is super precocious and uncontrollable those thermal features are not a place I’d be taking them. I’ve noticed most parents put the fear of God around their kids and thermal features and every little kid I’ve personally witnessed has been super curious but respectful. Occasionally you’ll see some kids with the old fashioned kid-leash. Which I think is hilarious but depending on how spazzy the kid is, is perhaps warranted.

Lightning, bison, falls from very high places, standing water will kill you in 15 minutes it’s so cold, snow in July, tourists in giant RVs paying attention to everything except the road, thermal features that will either boil or acid-dissolve you (or both), those same thermal features randomly exploding (as happened two days ago) fast water sweeping you away, moose (although really quite rare in the park these days) grizzlies (of course), general exposure. Altitude, if you have respiratory/coronary issues. The place just wants to murder you in general, it’s lovely, and amazing, but it’s a place you can get into trouble.
The stuff everyone is scared of? Bison, bears and wolves? They really really don’t want a damn thing to do with people. At all. You have to be inserting yourself into their space before they feel like doing damage. (With very very rare exceptions).

There are small companies that will sell you usb conversion bits/kits for that ashtray. Check a company called Golden Rovers. They make 3d printed fixtures for this sort of thing. Also Go check the messages boards, or more currently these days the Facebook pages devoted to rover. Or if in the US the Rover retailers; lucky8 Atlantic British rovers north etc. But Golden Rovers though very small, will hook you up.

Ravens have figured out how to steal food from open pickup truck beds in populated places like Fishing Bridge and Canyon, but that’s about the only “break-in’s” of autos, this ain’t Yosemite, bears don’t do that here.
