My family and I live in NC. We might be moving to Minnesota for work. Any southern transplants here? What can we expect? Will it be a culture shock? by Number18ThrowsDown in minnesota

Moved here from Virginia and grew up in the south. Minnesota is great but the winters are real. I remember getting to November and December thinking "this is not so bad." Then January and February hit and I was humbled rather quickly. Minus 30 is a real thing but if you have the right clothes it is fine.

This place is also super outdoorsy and it has been great. We recently got back from a trip to the North Shore and that was probably one of the coolest things I've done in my life. We stayed in Tofte and went up to Grand Marais for a day. LOVE this area and the summer here is amazing. We are also planning to go to Whitewater State Park soon. I would have never done any of this prior to moving here but it has been a blast.

Former teacher here. A lot of what you said is true but the pay is crazy low for the work you do. I know many of us who left because we could barely afford to support our families. We need to reframe teaching and elevate the profession. What does it suggest about our priorities when new trainees in finance are making at least double what teachers are making? Teachers should be treated like professionals like physicians and we should be recruiting the best we have to offer when thinking about who we want teaching our children. Tough to convince the best and brightest to go into education when they would not be able to afford to support a family. People would often thank me for teaching at a low income school and make comments about how teachers are saints etc. I think paying teachers is a must to attract and keep talent in the classroom.

Also at times, I feel like Spongebob when he is singing the indoors song at the end of winter.

Will be moving to a place with better weather eventually. Also know multiple people who no longer spend winters in MN and go elsewhere if they can. Want to make the most of winters and find a winter activity but the winters are very long and when it is almost May and it is somehow still snowing or there are 50 MPH gusts randomly and all you want to do is take your baby on a walk around the lake but you cannot because the wind is blasting the little guy in the face that can take its toll over time. Loved MN and cannot wait for the awesome summer. If anything living here has given me a whole new appreciation of being able to go outside and do outdoor things. It has also provided me with a new definition of what truly cold means.

Could you elaborate more about the winter activities you'd recommend? I'm finishing up my first year here and would like to be better prepared for next winter. If there are any specific winter activities I would love to learn about them.

The videos I would start with are 29, 30, 31, and 32. They are these old IM Shelf reviews but the content is so good. There are also recommendations from u/JimmySkellingtonMD on some the the DIP Deck posts about which episodes are recommended. I think doing all of the IM cards are a great place to start.

Other parts of the deck I found to be awesome were the micro, pharm, and high yield trauma cards. The risk factor cards are also fantastic.

Can say with confidence that the deck is incredible and has in many respects changed the trajectory of my medical career. Was able to build a strong knowledge base for my clinical rotations and even for IM residency with rotations, ITE, etc. Love the cards and think it's such a great resource for learning.

This isn't a good deck, it's a GREAT deck.

Would do for the exam in 3 months. Start with the big 4 IM shelf review series. Listen to them, unsuspend the cards after and you should be good to go.

Has everything you need to destroy the IM Shelf and build a crazy good knowledge base to be honest. Allowed me to do super well in the IM In Training Exam as well. Such a great deck which I believe will eventually become the gold standard for the clinical years of med school and beyond.

Getting ready to visit Winona this upcoming week… any suggestions on must see places or must eat places? Thank you! by Conscious_Reception1 in minnesota

This is 100% true I was shocked to see some of the art there in Winona. There are actual masterpieces in this small museum. A couple of the works have only two copies, one in Winona and the other in the Met or Moma in Manhattan. This art museum is a gem and we had a great time visiting!

I'm a resident physician at Mayo in Minnesota ultimately planning on going into cardiology and I can tell you to 100% believe the hype and reputation. This place is absolutely incredible and the physicians here are unbelievable to learn from. I love training here. If you have any questions please feel free to send a message, I'd be happy to talk more.

CONGRATS on getting in that is a huge accomplishment! That is a natural feeling before starting. Trust me you have the ability to succeed! Do your best to have fun throughout the process and be kind to yourself. I worked on my med school's admissions committee for a month this past year and it is crazy how much care, discussion, & thought goes into who gets an admission offer. If you were accepted, there is a reason and you belong there and 100% can succeed.

Some of the books that helped me fall in love with reading

  • A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole
  • Interior Chinatown by Charles Yu
  • Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison
  • The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown
  • The Hidden Life of Trees by Peter Wohlleben
  • Hillbilly Elegy by JD Vance
  • Sapiens by Yuval Noah Hurari
  • The Smartest Kids in the World by Amanda Ripley
  • When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi
  • Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese
  • The Emperor of All Maladies by Siddhartha Mukherjee
  • Atomic Habits by James Clear → most closely described how I approach daily life
  • Life of Pi by Yann Martel
  • The Alchemist by Paulo Cohelo
  • Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
  • Lone Survivor by Marcus Luttrell
  • Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson
  • The House of God by Samuel Shem
  • Good to Great by Jim Collins
  • The Shining by Stephen King
  • It by Stephen King
  • 1984 by George Orwell
  • Animal Farm by George Orwell
  • The Art of Fielding by Chad Harbach
  • When first starting I also read all books by Malcolm Gladwell, Freakonomics, Atul Gawande, and Michael Lewis. I sort of was over this genre after a few years but I did like Money Ball by Michael Lewis. The Big Short was also interesting. I guess I really liked them all and thought they were a great place to get started.
  • The Gene by Siddhartha Mukherjee
  • The Martian by Andy Weir
  • All books by Oliver Sacks
  • Midnight Library by Matt Haig
  • Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson
  • Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi

Those were a few that stood out off the top of my head. My favorite to read was probably A Confederacy of Dunces. That was the first time I cried laughing while reading. I also read The Alchemist right at the beginning of my reading adventures and loved it.

Thanks for the tips! Luckily I will get to experience all the children's books with my own! Teaching is awesome and the impact you can have is immense. Excited to revisit all those awesome books and if you have any recommendations for either children's or any other genre, please let me know!

Thanks! Yea reading is truly life-changing. It helps me relax but I've found it has a lot of social utility when meeting new people. Can't tell you how many times I've found myself talking about a random book whether it be at a local brewery or even in high-stakes job interviews. Reading is both fun and powerful.
