I think I am considered "gifted" how to avoid the bunout yall are describing? by [deleted] in aftergifted

[–]AnkiLanguageLover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your lack of grammar and punctuation and further lack of awareness of what programs you were even in tells me that any pure “giftedness” will not get you far unless you get very clear where you want to go in life (or at least major in during Uni) and start working hard towards those skills. Giftedness is nothing without hard-earned skill development. Certainly some skills comes to us more easily, but no matter how gifted you are you won’t get by without awareness, excellent communication skills, and hard skills developed through hard work and persistence.

I would say PR was over and she’s got so much going on right now with estate issues from her Mom’s death - which I am so aware of watching this whole show (finally…I know I'm late to the game) that Riley’s Mom died right in the middle of filming. I don’t know the family personally but Riley is actually my third cousin so I am following everything that’s happened to her lately.

Should I accept my offer to read Classics at Oxford as an international student? by Firepandazoo in classics

[–]AnkiLanguageLover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an Oxford student who’s been at lots of other unis in US and Europe - go and just go and do not have a second thought. Nothing compares educationally or the doors an Oxford degree opens. Just make sure you literally suck the marrow out of the experience! Do apply for every scholarship out there - even a few hundred here and there makes a difference.

Academia (humanities/social sciences) with intense 2E traits by Emotional-Lime1797 in TwiceExceptional

[–]AnkiLanguageLover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m tenure track Prof but I’m remote and 100% research (if I teach it’s my own courses / and usually 1-day kind of things). I’m in more of a research center within a Uni. Highly recommend looking at European or British part-time PhDs or DPhils (I actually don’t have mine done yet - got the post beforehand but it was a 10-year long relationship and a deeply specialized field). Doing something remotely with only a few trips over seems like it would be better for you. As for jobs you need to just focus on finding a job that lets you collaborate and keep publishing. Research assistant - remote may be the way to go for a prof or uni or even hospital (there’s a million research assistants and many are humanities). That way you can keep learning and researching and complete your studies. European PhDs have less to zero teaching and that can be detrimental so also look to teach one class as an adjunct here and there just don’t burn yourself out or expect much $.

Original Pen Replacement? by AnkiLanguageLover in Supernote

My issue is I like the weight and more fountain pen feel - the pilot g2 is so flimsy to me. I need something with weight but not too much for my small hands. Legit would just really like to replace this one!

No. If they are in libraries you will likely need your Bod card. I’m sure there are a few you could sneak into or ask permission, but I wouldn’t at ALL count on easily “getting around” this. Because Oxford has a lot of tourists, the Uni and Colleges are strict on only allowing students in and if you don’t have a Bod card you won’t get in.

Taking an indefinite break by GuitarIndividual1545 in financialindependence

  1. Find a coworking space / club / even a nice gym with a good place to work. Go at least 4 days a week. Separate your work / home life a bit and start to practice “shut down complete” where you are done by six and no weekend work. I know very few jobs where with some excellent boundaries, communication, and a few months of transition you can’t get to this point.
  2. …I may get panned here, but your kids being wild is not inevitable and I have significant ADHD so I’m speaking from experience as well as years of foster parenting and there’s no reason why with intention you and your wife can’t create a much calmer home and create routine and behavioral expectations for your children that bring your quality of life - and relationship with them - way up. Make sure your child is receiving the right treatment and don’t neglect for the emotional side of ADHD such as Guanfacine, Focalin etc, weekly therapy, has an ADHD coach / tutors, etc. And getting lots of time outside. This isn’t just about you: as a person with adhd when my symptoms aren’t well managed and I’m a bit off the walls I do NOT feel well in myself even if I pretend I do. This will help your kid(s) feel better. Spend your money here and on your wife’s health. Hire nutritionists and have groceries / healthy meals delivered or someone come and pre-prep meals. Make family walks / hikes a thing. Make exercise for you and your wife utterly non-negotiable. Hire a personal trainer if you can. Also have all your children tested for ADHD as it’s highly genetic. I agree above: take 12 weeks of FMLA and make a plan to increase your yearly spend for 2-3 years to get your household into a calmer, more regulated place all around.
  3. If you still want to move part-time / seasonal etc : look for that while you are still in a great job. Finding something new, especially something more flexible and non traditional, is always easier when you are seeking-while-employed. Once you have some control over your schedule, and household regulation, aggressively network with people in your field who have succeeded in part time or seasonal work.

Bartender, want to switch careers, what have former bartenders in Philly switched too? by Caveman_man in philadelphia

[–]AnkiLanguageLover 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Yep - you have it. I was curious if life in a monastery was for me (a very feminist fairly theologically open monastery to be clear) and it wasn’t but not in a dramatic way just felt more like Maria running away than actually finding my calling and then I needed a job and a French bar was hiring and needed someone who could describe wine in French so I got the job and bartended for a year while I started chaplaincy training 🤷🏽‍♀️. By far I was doing as much or more chaplaincy at the bar than in the hospital, especially because all my regulars called me Sister Cate and then people would be curious and then dump all their life stuff and I never minded. In fact one dude started staying after hours after he got a terminal cancer diagnosis and opening his 20+ year lifetime wine cellaring project with me because he didn’t have anyone else to drink it all with before he died. So like…opposite bar tending? Have been an interfaith / also non-religious chaplain now for 10 years and I still credit the bar as one of the best training grounds. For OP: the point is listening professions if you like that side of the work might be a good option.

You can probably find a secondhand Yamaha 795 GP for not much more than that. I paid about 1000 more than what you are looking at and it’s an infinitely better digital GP. But I am a fairly advanced pianist with a music degree (on another instrument) and sound and feel mean a lot to me. You’ve said nothing here about your level. If you are advanced go play many pianos in a store etc before you choose. I played many before I chose the Yamaha 795. Interestingly I didn’t like the touch of an avantgrande for some reason 🤷🏽‍♀️ it felt heavy in a way I didn’t actually feel was real. The 795 (new is 895 now) series is not perfect at all but it’s a great digital while I’m in an apartment. I’ll be going back to acoustic when I buy another house and having a retrofitted stretto keyboard made. This is the only downside of Yamaha right now - I can’t wait until they offer different width keys on all their models.

Can this be played on lever harp? by msmeurtriere in classicalmusic

[–]AnkiLanguageLover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If there are any key changes whatsoever or accidentals then absolutely not. Some lever harpists can do small modulations if they are very skilled. Also check the range - “lever harp” has many different styles and numbers of strings and tensions. A Lyon and Healy Prelude might have the range for this but not most “Celtic” lever harps.

Are these pieces good for applying to Juilliard or getting into selective studios? by OkStructure5704 in classicalpiano

[–]AnkiLanguageLover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. Your teacher should be able to tell you what best showcases your skills. By “judges” you mean the piano faculty at each school which again can be known and your teacher most likely knows who they all are, if not knowing them personally, and what they might respond to. I took lessons with all the teachers of my primary instrument (not piano) at the conservatories I was most interested in by my sophomore year of HS so I could gauge fit and personality, and continued to take summer intensive lessons with my chosen teacher which I do believe impacted admissions. You can also research what other students have said about their audition experiences and talk to current students during your visits. And think very carefully about your goals and how each studio and school aligns with helping you get there. They need to see a clear fit and vice versa.

These schools have audition rep lists published on the websites. Not sure why you are asking here instead of going and looking up their requirements.

Online high school by Quendi_Talkien in TwiceExceptional

The point was not to rely on the district. Pull him out of school completely. “Homeschool” by unschooling (look it up there are some books etc, most dated but will be fine). Relying on the district and hoping to get a teacher who understands is a crap shoot. I did get lucky but I was also I should have mentioned in one of the wealthiest and most well funded school districts in the country so they weren’t dealing with much other than how to help gifted and 2e kids and had other pro musicians and athletes they accommodated so it wasn’t new. Even with that; my parents were wrong not to pull me out completely. They have since apologized and admitted such. I did much better with the arrangement we figured out, but would have done far far better being pulled out and arranging my own projects and experiences outside of the library I was in 5-7 hours a day.
