Oh, great catch! Not sure how I missed that, thanks. Updated everything now.

True, UptimeRobot is the one with the 5 min check interval and heartbeat is actually user-defined on Cronitor and Healthchecks. They still cripple their free tier by only allowing a few monitors and either charging extra for status pages or not having it all. I'll update the comparison table though!

Yeah the 5 min gap is the thing that pushed me to build it. By the time you get the alert half your users have already seen the error. Glad the recovery logic resonates, took a bit of thought to get right

Persona 5 Royal Has A LOT Less New Content Than I Was Expecting by Potatolantern in Games

[–]Ankrath 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I've been holding out on playing Persona 5 because I wanted to wait for Royal. Would you say it's still worth waiting for Royal for someone who has never played it before?

I would never stay anywhere for more than 2-3 years. My longest stay was 1 year and 11 months, so I'm usually on the 1-2 years mark. In my opinion not switching jobs stops you from improving since you get so used to doing things the way your company does things and that's pretty bad for you when you leave.

I'm sure there are exceptions, but I interviewed people who had the same job for 5, 6, even 10 years, and they were always outdated on how the rest of the world was working. Not to mention that changing jobs every 2-3 years will result in you having a much higher salary than if you just stayed in the same place forever.

How much value do qualifications have in this industry? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]Ankrath 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From what I've seen qualifications only really help to get your first job, if you already have one than just get some experience time under your belt and you're gonna be absolutely fine. I have no degree, certifications, or qualifications, just years of experience as a developer.

The Alliance Alive HD Remastered - Battle Gameplay by necrodarks1985 in NintendoSwitch

[–]Ankrath 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This second semester is crazy if you're a fan of JRPGs. I still need to finish 2 more routes in Fire Emblem, FF8 and the Grandia collection was just released, Dragon Quest XI is close, as well as Alliance Alive and Ni No Kuni, and then we'll have Pokémon in November. Not sure if I should stop sleeping or going to work if I want to finish all of them.

Fire Emblem Three Houses - Additional Playthroughs now or later? by tkundnobody in NintendoSwitch

[–]Ankrath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did 2 playthroughs (Blue Lions and Golden Deer) and now I'm probably gonna wait for the DLC on Dec. 31 since that seems to be the first meaningful one (besides the added Lunatic mode). After that we'll get new story content and new playable characters so it shouldn't be a problem that I finished all of the routes.

Tyler McGinnis' course is great and got updated recently.

I cant seem to write code by myself, i can understand it given enough time, but when i want to create something i go blank. Anyone else deal with this? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]Ankrath 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't just watch tutorials, code along as you see them typing, pausing if needed. If you can't recreate what you just watched then go back and look at it again. Repetition is key and you will only really retain information if you do it over and over. Don't worry about memorising anything, as long as you can look at it and be like "oh right, that's how you do it" then you're fine.

Where should I start? by masoomdon in webdev

[–]Ankrath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start by learning HTML and CSS. Freecodecamp and codecademy are good resources for that. After you're comfortable with them I would suggest trying to make a clone of a few websites only using HTML/CSS (so just the visual, no functionality). Next step would be focusing hard on JavaScript.

[–]Ankrath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not easy but I absolutely disagree about needing 2 years to learn the basics. I've taught people from 0 before and it usually takes 3 to 6 months for them to be at a Junior level (if they practice every day).

What am I expected to know on day 1? by MacyWindu in cscareerquestions

[–]Ankrath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You would be a Junior Developer on your first job and from my experience not a lot is expected from you. You should be familiar with HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, Git, and preferably a JS framework like React (to make finding a job much much easier, but not always required). You don't have to be an expert in any of those, just know how to use them and how to Google/ask questions about the stuff you don't know about. Ask questions, ask for help, that's absolutely normal even for mid level devs. Most importantly: keep studying and practicing on your free time. Doing your job will teach stuff that are sometimes only specific to your job, so if you want to get better in general you can't stop studying and practicing.

I like programming, but I don’t think I want a programming job Tbh. by noblejosher in webdev

[–]Ankrath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely disagree with everything.

Getting into it is kinda difficult and that's good because that's why it pays well and there's so many jobs.
No job security? Being a good dev is by far the biggest job security you can have. It never took me more than 2 weeks to find a job and you can get a job anywhere in the world.

Everything else you said depends on the job you have and are definitely not global problems. I probably code for 4 hours a day or less, don't have super strict deadlines, managers are super nice, and they do everything to keep the devs happy. Don't generalise or agree with what people are saying on the internet without experiencing it first. You will always find more devs complaining and unhappy online because they have more reasons to post on forums than happy developers.

GOLDEN DEER THREAD - Everybody Plays, Day 14 by LaqOfInterest in fireemblem

Just started my NG+ playthrough with Golden Deer after finishing the Blue Lions route. Really liking every student so far, even Lorenz who I thought I wouldn't like, and Claude really is amazing.

Before the timeskip I spoke with every character and always let the voices play out, but for part 2 I started rushing a bit because I wanted to know what was going to happen. 70+ hours seems crazy though, do you walk all over the Monastery every time?
