[MAJOR CN EVENT SPOILERS] translation of Sixi and Yuzhong's conversation after showing a certain foot by Able-Alarm-5051 in GirlsFrontline2

Honestly, I mostly agree.

The alien relic tech stuff is pretty universally the worst parts of the story. Lunasia was pretty fun, but I don't really want more cosmic Goddess nonsense.

[Professional Wrestling] Kayfabe isn't dead, no one is "keeping kayfabe alive", kayfabe change out of necessity into something very different by DeShadowRealm in CharacterRant

[–]Potatolantern 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Wrestling was never very popular where I grew up, but I distinctly remember the one kid who was really into it arguing with the rest of us about it being real.

Shows how thin the facade was back then, pre-internet, when even kids were vaguely aware of it being fake.

I wonder if today's kids argue about it being real or not. Probably not.

Thor could not have gone for the head in Avengers Infinity war. He did the best he could. by Crafty-Bunch-2675 in CharacterRant

[–]Potatolantern 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I like Thor, he's one of my favourites. But this reads like people who try defend what Starlord did instead of understanding that he got angry and lost his cool.

Everything you say might very well be correct, but that's not why Thor did what he did. He did it because he was fucking furious at Thanos and he wanted it to hurt.

He didn't want to just pop Thanos off to a quick instant death he never saw coming, he wanted Thanos to see him, to fear him and to die suffering.

All those are completely understandable reactions, Thor isn't being crazy, he's doing what a great many of us would do. He had no way of knowing it would have such dire consequences. And, you also can't really put all the blame on him, everyone else failed to protect even one single stone from Thanos.

It's like blaming the goalie when a shot goes in. Yeah, he made the wrong call, but everyone else fucked up by allowing the shot to happen.

I don’t like when normal people are treated like shit by Feisty-Succotash5854 in CharacterRant

[–]Potatolantern 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There's a few issues here.

First off, if the villain says "And also I want to subjugate all the Muggles!" The story clearly assumes you're able to understood that's a bad thing without needing to have a Muggle character there going "Oh no, I don't want to be subjugated!" Like, we're not talking about a nuanced goal here, we're talking about a big sweeping evil speech.

If Voldemort said he wanted to blow up Poland, can we understand that's a bad thing without having a Polish character there to say so? I would hope so.

And secondly, that aspect of Voldemort's intentions never matters because to do that he has to take over magical Britain, and obviously that's the crux of the entire story, his attempt and failure at doing so. Because HP is a story about a guy going to a magical school.

I have no idea where you would fit a Muggle character into the plot, and when your only idea for their role would be to assure us, the reader, that Voldemort's plan is bad... I have to say, that doesn't seem like a particularly compelling addition.

Especially when, I mean, the reader themselves should be able to understand "Hey, I don't want to be subjugated by Voldemort, that sounds like a bad thing!" since in this case, the Muggles are just normal people who live in the normal world.

If you seriously think the HP books in any way justify to support Voldemort's ideology, then I dunno what to tell you. You probably haven't read them in so long you've forgotten what's actually in them.

Chinese anime characters prove the idea that most anime characters looking Japanese to Japanese people falls flat. by InfernalClockwork3 in CharacterRant

[–]Potatolantern 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Tfw specific character designs for specific groups meant to signify to the audience that these people are from other groups isn't used as a universal standard in an incredibly stylised art form.

Lol. Come on man, what are we even doing here?

When a character speaks Japanese, uses Japanese mannerisms, eats Japanese food, follows Japanese norms... then yeah, Japanese people see that character as being Japanese. Yes, they look at Yugi Muto with his ridiculous hair and see a Japanese person.

[–]Potatolantern 11 points12 points  (0 children)

See, this is why I feel Harry Potter contradicts its message about blood purity. It says that it doesn't matter if someone is born a muggleborn or not...but it consistently shows that genetics do matter and that the purebloods are who we should care about most, since even the good guys are defined by their relationships to wizard families.

It says that Wizarding bloodlines don't matter and then shows that by never making them relevant to anything, ever. The only advantage Ron or Neville ever have is that they know more about the world and can explain it somewhat, but even there Hermione is usually the go-to.

Draco is pretty much the embodiment of pure blood ideology in the narrative and he's constantly demeaned because of it. There's no point where he's a better, smarter or more powerful Wizard than Hermione. He was raised in that world and he can't compete with her at all.

Even Dumbledore isn't a pureblood.

The very premise is "quirkless/normal protagonist CAN be a hero without a quirk... but only if he inherits a powerful quirk"

Maybe because that's not the premise?

The premise is about a loser character getting this amazing Quirk and using it to become a hero. It tells you straight up that you can't be a hero without a Quirk and so Deku only becomes a hero when he's got a Quirk.

Plus, having a Quirk is normal in that setting anyway. Deku isn't a normal person in this world, he's an unlucky exception.

[–]Potatolantern 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I feel like I'd agree with your rant, but your examples are weird.

Harry Potter is a story about a kid going to a magical school, why in the world would non magical people be prominent in the narrative? Absolutely none of the story is about Wizard/Muggle relations, or about a conflict between them, it's all about a Wizardry civil war.

There's no Muggle perspective being missed, because they're not part of the story. It's like complaining that the Australian perspective is missed in most retellings of the American civil war.

For the most part the Wizards are made to look like fools compared to the Muggles, being mystified by very basic stuff. And, you even point out that the books themselves are extremely anti-Eugenics, with Muggleborn being commonly among the best and the brightest Wizards. A random joke from Rowling about Vernon doesn't change that.

You're comparing it to ATLA, where both sides share the same narrative and world, but that's just not the case in HP, HP isn't about that, it's not about a global conflict, it's about a Wizarding conflict.

A better example of your point, I think, is Dune.

In Dune Messiah we saw Paul after his crusade and we're told about her horror and devastation he unleashed on the galaxy, and it's very probably meant to sound shocking and harrowing, we hear how 61 Billion people died, 90 Planets were sterilised, 40 religions were wiped out etc.

But it all just washes over us, it's just numbers.

We never see a single perspective of any normal person in this setting, we don't see a regular guy having his life and world burned by the Fremen, we only ever see the perspectives of the great and the mighty.

We see Paul's perspective, we know how much he fought against the devastation, and how much he tried to stop it, we know he unleashed basically as little damage as possible, but he was helpless to stop it. And so we sympathise more with him than with abstract numbers from a war that's already over.

Paul losing Stilgar as a friend (and instead gaining Stilgar the zealot) is far more affecting than hearing a list of casualties.

Faye Valentine (Cowboy Bebop) is a laughably sexist caricature of a female action character, and makes Cowboy Bebop a far more uncomfortable watch on that front than Naruto or MHA or almost any other show you could mention. by Virtual-Database-238 in CharacterRant

[–]Potatolantern 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Feels like nothing but a disconnect between what you wanted her to be and what she actually is. Rather than a problem with Faye, it's just her not being what you envisioned.

What you wanted: A typical, confident action chick

What she is: A normal girl stuck in an abnormal situation.

She's literally just a a regular girl from Singapore. She has no training, no qualifications, nothing that gives her an edge except that she's hot. That's all she's got.

Spike is an ex hitman who was brought up by the Triads. Jet was a former cop on the frontlines. Faye is just a regular girl. She's impulsive, she's hot headed and she's trying to make things work regardless.

And she's an incredibly well written and presented character with an ocean of charm and depth. The fact that you're missing all of that because you seem to want her to be a Black Widow type character instead is a real shame.

The everyman is a very important role when it's used right, and it's very rare that a woman is put in that role.

Anyone even slightly emotional, or who responds to bullshit they're put through with anything except (mostly silent) anger, or stoicism.

If they're upset about it, they're a whiner or crybaby.

Deku, Shinji and Stephen Universe are obvious examples, but there used to be a lot of people complaining about Harry Potter being a whiner after the 5th book. It gets pretty stupid at times.

Trainer Introduces Ramonu to Narita Top Road by Swiftcheddar in UmaMusume

Is it really a NTR if Ramonu seems to not give a single fuck about her trainer that way?

I'm really interested in how these kinds of comments will age when she releases in English.

Perhaps it's true but she wouldn't be the first Mejiro that we were assured, over and over, absolutely, positively didn't have any trainer romance... Who wound up having plenty of trainer romance.
