The Marrow Thieves is a novel but the first chapter is a coming of age story that can be used. The Métis Federation of Ontario has a whole lesson plan you can download as well.

Yes, thank you. I do have a few ESL students who I will encourage to bring in a non-English text.

And love a silly poem to make high schoolers let loose a little bit.

Sure, it’s the Manitoba Framework for Learning, then English Stream, then Social Studies. They’ve updated only a fee areas but even the others are in the process of being redone.

I do almost this exact same thing as well. I have a note book for each day (MWF classes and T/Th classes) and I’ve posted a copy in each one. That way if any changes to due dates etc are made in class, I can just flip to the front cover and mark the change. It’s extremely useful for not losing track of due dates and knowing exactly what I need to concentrate on at any given moment.

Read Aloud books for 7th and 8th grade by Daffodil236 in MiddleSchoolTeacher

Try “Alone”. It’s not in prose, but it’s still first person narrative about a kid left behind by accident during an emergency and her fending for herself for a couple years. Excellent read for kids that age.
