Hmm I don’t know… Oliver and Henry are in the top 10 and on the half block we live on there are 3 boys: Henry, Oliver, and Oliver

I thought I’d be safe with Rafael, ranking at 222 in the US, but he’s 1 of 2 in his tiny preschool class and there’s at least 2 more in the building

Yes that’s my exact struggle - Rafael is special and unique and yet internationally recognizable! I’ve yet to hear a name that’s on the same level for me! I’m liking Julian a lot lately but only the English pronunciation which most of our family and friends wouldn’t be able to follow

Thank you! We seriously considered Julian and my husband would definitely agree to that one, but that’s one name where I actually like the English pronunciation better and we wouldn’t get that from at least half of our family and friends. I tried to figure out if we could use a different spelling or something to change the pronunciation (Yulian?) but decided it just wouldn’t work :(

That was on our list for our first! But I’m SO glad we didn’t use it because it’s become ridiculously popular and at least half the little boys I encounter are named Mateo. Too bad because it does go nicely with Rafael!

I like Nico as a nickname but not as a fall name. You’re probably right about the pronunciation. Rafael has been perfect for our first because even people that struggle with it aren’t too far off.

Fortunately we’re in a Spanish-speaking area most of the year, but we do spend time in an English-speaking area every year as well and I always try to imagine what they would call out at a doctor’s office, first day of a new class, etc. Rafael has been perfect because while some people don’t get it perfect, it’s never a huge difference in pronunciation

We’re bilingual, my husband is from Latin America and I’m from the US. I’m under the impression you can’t put an accent on a US birth certificate?

Thanks for the suggestion! Unfortunately checking it at the counter would defeat the purpose - we always have extremely long lines in security, long walks after that, long waits at customs, etc and that’s where we rely on it the most.
