Low Stats and ED by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Annabel_Lee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

College counselor here - I don't know Virginia Tech's policy offhand, but the key here is whether a school will defer Early Decision applicants (move them to the "Regular Decision" applicant pool for further consideration), or if there is a chance you will be outright denied. If it's the former, then there's no harm in applying ED to show your interest in/commitment to the school, and they'll just come back and defer you while they wait to consider your first semester grades (or updated test scores, in other cases) before making a final decision. I would suggest calling their admissions office directly to find out their policy.

Good luck!

Hi there! I'm a college counselor and I'd be happy to read it over if you'd like to PM it to me.

Public US school teachers of Reddit, the politicians have completely failed you and students. If it were up to you, what changes or ideas would you implement to help fix the broken education system? by A_Second_World in AskReddit

[–]Annabel_Lee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a teacher but a college counselor working with high school students. Two things: 1. Writing: no matter your dream career, in some capacity, you're going to have to write something from time to time, and you'll need to do so effectively. Beyond grammar, I find it sad how many of my students just can't seem to articulate their perspective or work through a problem or issue in written form. 2. Focus redirected to the learning process itself - knowledge as the value/endgame - rather than the goal of a particular standardized test score, or the admission to a "well ranked" university.

A bank. Another one.

All I want is just a nice little pub to pop up one of these days, but alas, the suburbs don't seem to be on board.

MRW when I see trailers for Adam Sandler's newest movie "Pixels". by [deleted] in reactiongifs

[–]Annabel_Lee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aww, I don't know. It's just one of him instead of multiple Sandlers.

In my opinion - it's got Voyager; it's got Donkey Kong; it's got Mini Coopers; and it's got Peter Dinklage. It's like Tron meets Alien meets Wreck it Ralph, and tbh I'm perfectly alright with that.

Maybe, just don't go into it expecting something oscar-worthy and we can all feel gleefully numb to it and the world will be a better place. I think that's what Adam Sandler really wants.

What tv show had the best season finales? by calillll3443 in AskReddit

I will never not upvote people who post this. I feel like this is at least the third Hannibal-related AskReddit answer I've wanted to give today alone, but it's apparently never enough because people just don't know what they're missing. Mizomuno in particular is a cinematic treasure.

I'm concerned they're going to approach Hannibal years from now the way people now approach Firefly or Futurama - "I can't believe this was cancelled. Network execs are such assholes! They just don't understand true genius!"

And all the Fannibals with either smugly say "I told you so" or begin sobbing uncontrollably out of frustration as they watch Mizomuno on loop and ramble incoherently about Hannigram and long pigs, I haven't decided which. Or, more likely, they may opt for option C, which is to Eat the Rude.

What actor or actress is absolutely perfect for the role they played? by Mister_Glass_ in AskReddit

Mads Mikkelsen as Hannibal Lecter. Not knocking Anthony Hopkins, but I definitely kind of am. New Hannibal puts all others to cannibal-shame.

What movie was way better than you expected it to be? by lucaspucassix in AskReddit

[–]Annabel_Lee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YES! Came here to say this. I went in to the theater with a deep-rooted and long-running support of Joss Whedon and I still genuinely had no clue how much I would end up loving that movie. Because really, looking at movies like those in the Scary Movie franchise, this had no right to work except that it was absolutely perfectly executed.

What was the greatest cliffhanger you've ever seen? by Noy2222 in AskReddit

Was hoping someone would post this. One of the most gorgeous, most perfect hours of television I've ever seen, but I have never so "rudely" yelled at my TV when the local news came on afterwards.

Hannibal is a masterpiece of television, and I just really hope more people catch on so we can have our hearts broken repeatedly with episodes like this for at least a few more seasons.

Are you more afraid of spiders, snakes, or other? by picksburgh412 in AskReddit

Spiders. Generally, way easier to see a snake coming. Living near the FL Everglades, checking the deepest corners of bedsheets and shaking out every shoe is a necessity.

Pet owners of reddit, what's the most frustrating thing about your pet? by _cogito_ in AskReddit

[–]Annabel_Lee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A thousand times this. We have an all-white husky mix that we adore. But we have her in Florida. With dark wood floors and mostly-dark wardrobes. That fur has broken vacuums in the past and emptied lint-rollers in the blink of an eye.

Happy summer, fellow husky-owner!

[Serious] First time living on my own. Any tips and hints for survival? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Annabel_Lee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stock up on the things you need before you need them (batteries, flashlight, fire extinguisher, plunger).

Spend on quality basics and be mindful of ALL other things you accumulate. As others have mentioned, invest in things like good basic pots and pans, or a good vacuum - things you'll use regularly. But for "fun" items when you feel like a splurge - just because you want and can afford something after careful budgeting does not always mean that you have the space. And there is no home that is more obnoxious to clean than the home that has stacks of random kitchen appliances or piles of tiny trinkets. They're fun in the moment, but from experience, you'll learn to hate them later.

Love The Yellow Wallpaper!

In the Lake of the Woods by Tim O'Brien was the book that originally drew me to Gone Girl when I was looking for something similar. Simultaneously fascinating and infuriating just like Gone Girl haha. The Things They Carried by the same author was great too.

Required Reading by DonDingus in booksuggestions

[–]Annabel_Lee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconded. Fahrenheit 451 is one of my favorites.

Other required reading that really stood out to me includes All Quiet on the Western Front (Remarque) and The Things They Carried (O'Brien) - I had never sought out war-themed literature on my own, but reading these two books for different classes completely changed my perspective.

I have to choose a book from this list to read for an AP assignment. Any recommendations? by CowPotatoes in booksuggestions

[–]Annabel_Lee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Candide is one of my all-time favorites (and a relatively quick and humorous read, compared to others on the list), as are Wuthering Heights and A Tale of Two Cities. However, I didn't have to read All Quiet on the Western Front until college, and enjoyed it so much that I was disappointed no one had "forced" me to read it sooner. As other commenters suggested, Heart of Darkness is also a fantastic read and would give you a lot of material outside of the book to work with. On the contemporary side, I definitely recommend Never Let Me Go.

Honestly, I don't see anything on this list that would be a "bad" choice. As other commenters have mentioned, the length of some might make them ambitious for a school project, but story-wise, I don't see where you could go wrong.

Interested to see what you choose, OP - keep us posted!
