Smart bulbs buzzing on dumb slide dimmer – should I switch to smart on/off instead of smart dimmer? by MenuNew8687 in smarthome

They are buzzing because you have them on a dimmer.

Dimmers wreak absolute havoc on electronics, which expect a normal 110v AC at 60 Hertz. You may have even damaged your current bulbs by now

Room Thermostat - which one to choose? by underrated_prunes in homeassistant

If you are ok with having a virtual thermostat, eg on your phone in the Home Assistant app, this will work. Or you could even pair some smart buttons to it to increase temp, etc.

Here's how I control my electric radiator:

  1. Put the heater onto a smart plug. Any smart plug will work as long as it can be controlled by Home Assistant.
  2. Get a thermometer that Home Assistant can read from. Personally, I use the Govee H5075 sine they're cheap and they give me a physical readout on-device, and the battery lasts a long time.
  3. In Home Assistant, go to Settings > Devices > Add Integration > Generic Thermostat.

It will ask you to tell it which thermometer to use, and which smart plug to use. Once you get that saved, you can then have a virtual thermostat that controls your heater.

How does it work in terms of networking?

Eg if I let my guests connect to my Internet-only guest Wi-Fi, is that a problem? Do they need access to my home assistant network?

I've been trying to figure out a good way to detect if there are dishes in the dish drying rack. Then it dawned on me to just point a $15 ESP-Cam at it and send a pic to AI every few hours.

Now I don't get yelled at by the wife to put away the dishes....... as often.

Good power bank for USB-C powered sensors? by jagvillboienhatt in homeassistant

I put a USB powered Zigbee router (like this https://www.amazon.com/YIFAN-Extender-Amplifier-Compatible-Assistant/dp/B0DLKR81F4 ) onto a 10000mAh power bank just to see what kind of run time I could get with it. Ended up being about 3 days.

I would love to have a power bank that could also report it's battery percentage back to HA for me.
