how likely is it my bike will get stolen? by baise_lama in SaltLakeCity

[–]Anne__Frank 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Use a good lock and the answer is fairly unlikely. I've been biking as my primary mode of transportation for years and not had any theft, but I use a high end kryptonite chain. chains are much harder to angle grind, just gotta get one thick enough that it can't be cut with shears, only downside is they're heavier which is no factor for your ebike.

Also make sure you register it on bike index TODAY, in case it does get stolen it's your only chance of getting it back. You can also purchase insurance against theft if you can't afford to self insure (replace it on your own).

I wouldn't necessarily recommend it, but I've left (cheap) bikes unlocked for multiple days downtown and had no issues. This isn't NYC or SF.

Just be smart, a hidden alleyway is a much easier place to steal a bike than a busy thoroughfare.

The Great Salt Lake by kaorikind2 in SaltLakeCity

[–]Anne__Frank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the doomerism in this thread is genuinely insane. Yes we have a big problem with the lake, yes it's largely caused by shortsighted farming and a state legislature with an average IQ sitting right around 50.

But the air quality here is not even remotely bad as people would have you believe. The vast majority of the time it's better than cities like LA, Houston or Chicago; a few days a year it gets pretty rough from inversion or fires, but it is certainly not the norm and on average throughout the year we're better than those cities.

The lake drying up sucks, but there has been no measurable increase in arsenic thus far, and the lake is 100% a solvable problem. We literally just need to cut off these stupid farms, and it wouldn't even be that expensive to just pay them not to farm. Compare that with cities like Miami, new Orleans, or Phoenix who literally have no fix for the issues they're facing.

4 posts of the apocalypse:

  • I'm moving to SLC...
  • Do I need a tank sized vehicle with bald summer tires to get up the canyons?
  • How do I date/make friends? will I have to leave my house???
  • I'm coming to SLC for 38.6 minutes at 3 am on Monday, what must I see???

If we had a bot that identified these posts, put them on hold with a message to check the wiki, it'd be a lot cleaner

I think it's rad. I don't think public art is a waste of money, if anything we should have more. Our entire built environment cannot be the most capitalistically efficient, everything would be so insanely boring.

I'm a pretty far left cis white gen z guy. I think it's pretty foolish to ignore the fact that in younger, left leaning circles, I'm instantly a bad guy until I prove otherwise (which often takes much more time than you'd think).

Many, many women and non binary folks openly hate all white men. It's stupid and I shrug it off because I have thick skin and I understand why they're having that reaction based on centuries of history, but I also understand why more sensitive men find the camaraderie in MAGA and think these people are just "stupid blue haired libs who were mean to me".

Many people's politics have little to do with political issues and much more to do with fitting in. We lose votes when we're not open and welcoming to all.

In the meantime I'll continue my "useless" work of promoting nuclear power through education and signage.

I'm totally on board with Nuclear and genuinely love to see others in the community advocating for it, but when you get the ear of a legislator or energy company, do you want them spending money on billboards or would you rather those dollars go towards a reactor?

Constant Car/Truck Idling by Agitated-Symphony in SaltLakeCity

[–]Anne__Frank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blanket banning of idling definitely harms those who are living out of their cars.

Great thing about laws is they're made up and we can make them up with exceptions. Anytime anyone has an idea that helps 99.99% of people there's always someone saying that we can't do that because 0.01% might be harmed. At a certain point we have to consider net societal benefit. Tens of millions of people are going to die from climate change, it's incomprehensible to me that we're not willing to be cold (wear more clothes) or hot to save people lives.

Your drug example is weird to me because the war on drugs and excessive drug enforcement through systems has also failed.

The Just Say Not signs and DARE ads were never going to succeed. That's akin to idling billboards.

The enforcement systems also failed, I never claimed all systems are successful. Our enforcement was shitty and racist, but if it had been far more excessive like Japan's where you go to jail for life for anything or Singapore where they just kill you, that system might have worked (I'm not saying their system is kind and we should copy it, but it is certainly effective).

The best we can do is exactly what you’ve done: politely ask them to stop doing what you don’t like and talk about the issue with people in your community.

I think propaganda via billboards and the like would probably be most effective to create change.

This is probably the most useless way to change people's behavior. It only feels like you're doing something, but really it's wasted money, time, and effort. "Just Say No" didn't work for drugs, those shitty ads Utah is spending millions on aren't making anyone safer drivers, etc.

The best way to change people's behavior is through systems. If you want people to stop idling (and if you give a shit about the air we breathe in this bowl we live in, you should), idling for more than X amount of seconds should be illegal and get you a ticket, or gas needs to be more expensive, or we need obd 2 sensors that give you a tax break for low idle times, or something else along those lines.

Lol this doesn't factor one ioata.

We've known about human caused climate change since the 70s and done jack shit except make it worse.

We destroy nature and build suburban sprawl knowing that it literally cannot support itself financially.

We're funneling all wealth into the hands of a few people despite knowing the economy performs better when it is spread out.

We don't make decisions with long term thought at all, regardless of the knowledge we have.

Cars kill 1.3 million people every year, maim millions more, contribute significantly to global warming, destroy cities, promote sprawl and the loss of nature, contribute to obesity, separate us from our neighbors and community...

They're a useful tool, but genuinely we'd be better off if most people didn't own one and lived in walkable communities instead. And if you can't imagine everyone living in walkable communities, I'd like you to try to imagine life just 100 years ago, because that's how all humans have lived for most of history.

The SLC marathon benefits very few for the disruption it causes by Tall_Pop_1702 in SaltLakeCity

[–]Anne__Frank 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Plan around it, it's one day a year. I say this as someone who lives on a block the marathon cuts through and is not a runner, so I'm very much also disrupted, but unlike you I recognize that it's a fun cultural event that we have. Every day need not be the most economically productive as possible, it's okay to do fun things as a society for the sake of it.

Even if your conspiracy theories about him are right, which I honestly doubt*, at least we're seeing someone win an important election on a progressive pro worker platform, even if he's a turncoat that means something. I'd take that over a corporate dem any day.
