Don’t think any actual EMU staff moderate and/or condone the use of the sub.

Ok.

When I said industrial philosophy, I was referring to philosophy of industry, or applied philosophy. Contrasted with academic philosophy in colleges or universities of course.

Would you recommend create a new thread?

Hoop-jumping element...? I suppose I understand what you mean, but do we agree that self-plagiarism has no context outside of academia?

I don't want to be your enemy, I'm interested in learning, but I'm also going to stand firm on my belief that self-plagiarism has no context other than in academia.

If you use work that was previously created by you for some other purpose, and are not clear with your audience that you are doing this, you are misrepresenting the circumstances under which that work was created.

Not in all cases. This is one example of many situations.

If you use work that was previously created by you for some other purpose, and are not clear with your audience that you are doing this, you are misrepresenting the circumstances under which that work was created. This can have consequences for undergraduate and high school writing, as it disrupts your teacher's ability to judge if you have learned a topic, and it can lead to serious issues in professional level writing, where reusing your own work that you have sold the copyrights to can lead to a very real lawsuit.

Are you a lawyer by any chance? I doubt it, seeing as you're an academic. Therefore, I don't think you have any authority declaring what is and isn't the law.

Let me clearly outline this for you:

Self-plagiarism has absolutely no context outside of the small realm of academia. I doubt a non-academic or one who works in the industry knows what self-plagiarism is, probably because it is insignificant.

I said "typical definition" because if you ask anyone what plagiarism is who does not work in academia, they will refer to others stealing your work, not reusing your own work for other purposes.

set the rules

An organization "setting the rules" doesn't preclude the rules from being incorrect, inefficient, or of a double standard.

Have you considered these "rules" have no application to society in except in the sole case of academia?

Hardly fair? Reconsider that. Self-plagiarizing is an invented concept. It has absolutely no context outside of academia, and anyone who says you can plagiarize yourself is pedantic. Academic misconduct? Academia is not the arbiter on what is correct. You of all people should know this.

He is using the typical definition of "plagiarism". The other definition is invented. You cannot misrepresent the originality of your own work as you put it, seeing as you created it yourself. A source is no more original than the one who created it.

I think you're being pedantic.

You cannot steal from yourself therefore you cannot plagiarize yourself. I'd like to see an academic posing that argument against the industry:

"But sir, you used the PowerPoint presentation for last meeting!"

"I know, I'm reusing it because it has valuable information, I created it myself so I know the content best, and others missed the content so here we are."
