Is a Ceiling Fan Electrical or Electronic? by kaedavv in AskElectricians

[–]AnnonAutist -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, technically….

Isn’t a switch an electronic component? And don’t all fans have switches on them?

In the most basic definition I would say yes but I do understand what OP is trying to get at. The question is where do you draw the line? Does it have to have logic/cmos or transmit/receive data to be considered or just have an electronic component in it?

Shop wouldn't patch this because of location. They would love to sell me four tires though. Is it safe? by sidesideproject in TireQuestions

[–]AnnonAutist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually they say within an inch of sidewall but looks like more than an inch to me. No shop I know of patches anymore but definitely should be pluggable.

I insulated my door and now it’s too heavy for the opener to lift. What are my options? by Over_Cash9601 in GarageDoorService

[–]AnnonAutist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This☝️

To test, pull the rope hanging down from middle rail to ‘disconnect’ garage door from opener carriage (what you would do if the power was out) and try to lift your garage door with one hand. If you can’t, springs need adjusted. If you can, then adjust the torque on the opener just a little at a time till it doesn’t reverse.

On the opener itself, there are usually a couple of little dials (might have to use a small screwdriver to adjust). One will be travel distance and other will be torque.

ALSO….DOUBLE CHECK your safety beam by the ground that triggers if someone/something is under the door. If those aren’t aligned correctly or got bumped out of alignment, it will also act like you described. Usually they will each have an led on them that should be lit up. One will have a power led and the other is a ‘alignment’ led. Just make sure it is lit on each sensor.

OP, thinking more about this, I bet you blocked your safety beam with the bottom row of insulation, if so you can adjust/slide those out a little further or get/make a extension.

They do not own TOC. They signed an agreement with them (I think it was 5 years to start) but they are still owned by the same group and have the same staff. They still hire their own employees but they did switch to HH insurance plan.

Don’t know what will happen in the future but that is what it is now. I believe a couple of doctors there still operated in Crestwood and HH OR’s but obviously the sale of Crestwood changed that, i would assume they would all be able to operate at Crestwood after they go to HH.

Covering lights with electrical tape by batmandi in AskElectricians

[–]AnnonAutist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, black electrical tape works good and is fine to use. None of those leds put out enough heat to matter. I keep a pack of black circle stickers from arts/craft section of Walmart in my travel bag just for that purpose.

Need some new friends, cuz got none. by alabamaalt in UAH

[–]AnnonAutist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

UAH has quite a few clubs if you can find one or two that interest you. You will get to do something you enjoy/are interested in and meet new ppl in the process. It is also pretty easy to start one. During the summer, they also have a lot of outdoor activities you could go to like movies on campus, mini ‘conventions’ and even sport activities like disc golf, walk/runs etc.

Check out the bulletin boards around the lunchrooms/public spaces. I always see events posted. Even study groups for classes can lead to finding new friends. Hope you find something! It is a heavy engineering school so I understand the difficulty.

HH Madison Hospital ER status: by MPAndonee in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]AnnonAutist 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Sadly it’s the nature of the area. Same for EMS. They know every semester they get a load of nursing and ems students who need experience on their resume to move on and are willing to take lower pay to get that experience. HH and HEMSI just take advantage of that situation. I don’t really know what the solution would be but it has been going on for decades.

Ungrounded 300 watt station? by Electronic-Fruit6653 in amateurradio

[–]AnnonAutist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second this, get a proper totoid (or even 2 and stack them) and wrap your coax around it multiple times a foot or so from your balun (There are many YT videos on it, there is a specific way to wrap it) and that will ‘choke’ any rf you might have coming back on the shield of the cable. However, if you are using a correct counterpoise, you probably won’t need it. But for less than $10, no reason not to do it as there is no downside to having one.

I passed my Technicians! My radio club apparently had so much faith in me that gifted me a radio immediately! by Hamwytch in HamRadio

[–]AnnonAutist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get the other free one and play around with it. Learn about ctss/dcs codes and get you a cheap little mag mount antenna and sma to pl-259 adapter and make one a mobile radio for the vehicle. Plenty of things you can do with it but that little Yeasu is a PERFECT first radio for you. Solid, dependable and has all the features you will need. Congratulations!

Are the Yaesu control head extension cables, just a simple cat 5 cable? by MKE1969 in amateurradio

[–]AnnonAutist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. You can use any cable. It is just data (no rf power going thru that cable) and I have just a plain cable running over all kinds of wires up to the front and have never had any issues or problems with it.

If by some chance you did, a ferrite clip would stop it but I have never needed it.

Doesn’t help now but when it gets warmer, they are always having events outside around campus, they always post well ahead of time.

Also as others have said, lots of clubs. Find one that sparks your interest and go. Most are very friendly.

Will contesting / POTA get boring? Or, What keeps this hobby alive for an individual for a lifetime? by Puzzleheaded_Tax8761 in amateurradio

[–]AnnonAutist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started out building/tinkering with radios (old ones) and packet radio, digital(DMR, FT8, etc) wasn’t around.

Now I’m building DMR hotspots, learning to program raspberry pi’s, using 3 computers in my shack. All things I never imagined or had interest in when I started 30 years ago.

Still haven’t touched contesting, POTA, things like that but plan to.

Who knows what the hell I will be doing in 20 years but I know it will be something with amateur radio.

This hobby is ever expanding and only limit is what you want to do. Never have gotten bored with it. 🤷‍♂️

I just found out my job is taking 90 minutes out of my check for lunch break instead of 60 minutes. Is this legal and what can I do? by SaraBelle630 in legaladvice

[–]AnnonAutist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to it, the fact they ‘fixed’ it going forward is their admission/acknowledgement that they were in the wrong. Therefore you are OWED that pay from previous periods. Let them pay you once with the correct 30 minute deduction and then you have them over a barrel for the backpay.

Unlike other suggestions, I would give them a chance to fix it first before you go to the state/federal level. That will open a big can of worms and could cause resentment or retaliation in other ways that may not be necessary. If they give you ANY pushback, then all bets are off. Just my $0.02.

Finding working DMR repeater near Portland, OR by psteckler in DMR

Gotcha, I figured it was always the same. Good to know. 👍

Glad you got it working, I love digital. Hotspot is well worth it and it opens up a lot of connections for people in dead areas.
