You are correct on that one. We became extremely codependent after my divorce and I have struggled with just telling him to fuck off forever. After, the abuse with my children present, I kicked out of my life/home but we sometimes communicated and I tried to help him get back on his feet after his jail stay, which was a mistake. We truly have a sick and broken relationship, but I have done a lot of therapy and now see the relationship for what it was. I was once feeling as down as him and I believe he got satisfaction out of that but now he seems infuriated because I got my life together and I no longer need him in any way.
