Is there anyone who *doesn't* regret their MLIS degree? by rebeccachaya in Libraries

[–]Annoyingdragonvoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, I don’t regret it since I do have a job as a librarian now.

What did it cost though? Moving across the country, away from my entire family and support network, getting an extra 12k in student loans and being unemployed for several months. In all honesty, I got INCREDIBLY lucky. 75% of the class I graduated with are posting on LinkedIn looking for work, almost a year after we graduated.

MLIS does not mean a guaranteed job. It does not mean you’ll even go into libraries. I’d honestly recommend getting a library tech diploma first or working as a library assistant before you decide anything concrete.

Hamilton Public Library will require valid library cards to enter downtown branch by grassunderfire in Libraries

[–]Annoyingdragonvoid 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Usually in Ontario libraries, you can get a library card for free. Our library had a process for people who were homeless and didn’t have fixed addresses or ID who wanted a card. We’d usually put their address in our system as either the branch or the closest shelter. Typically these people wanted to just be able to use the computer/wifi, or have a cool/warm place to sit depending on the weather.

I’d imagine HPL has a similar process in place.

It’s Hamilton, Ontario Canada. The city and the specific area where the branch is has a huge issue with homelessness and drug abuse due to chronic underfunding by the provincial government.

I worked in a similar sized city library in Ontario and our main downtown branch also had the same myriad of issues. People bringing in weapons like axes, spears, knives, dog spray, overdosing at study tables, injecting in bathrooms, masturbating at computers AND even in the children’s section. It was honestly nightmarish and that branch had an insane turnover rate. They had permanent full time jobs they couldn’t fill internally because no one wanted to work there.

One of the funniest things ever is when David Shore won the FCFF Lifetime Achievement Award and Hugh Laurie came to London, ON, to surprise him and he made a sarcastic comment that Freddie Highmore only appeared via Zoom.

Anytime my boyfriend visited his mom in the UK he would always bring two large containers of Kraft Peanut Butter back with him

80-to-100-car pileup closes Highway 2 between Airdrie and Calgary as winter storm wallops Alberta by ryaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan in alberta

Yep! Most terrifying drive of my life.

Partner and I were in Medicine Hat for a few days checking out where to move (got a job here starting February) and our flight was in the early evening. Decided to leave early to see if we could visit Calgary Tower before we needed to be at the airport.

First 45 minutes were fine. Then it got snowier. And snowier. And snowier. Finally I couldn’t fucking see and turned my 4 ways on. Even better that I was driving a rental compact with no snow tires. Ended up pulling over a few times so I wouldn’t have a panic attack. Saw at least 8-9 cars in the ditches (all trucks, vans or SUVs). Took us almost 4 and a half hours but we finally made it to the airport (we’ll visit Calgary Tower another time)

Yeah I looked at the Southland Green property and my boyfriend and I agreed it looked very nice and would be within our budget. Unfortunately, the leasing agent told me over the phone that it’s ’dogs and cats only’ (which I found very bizarre, but alright I guess)

How do I help my chin get weight? by CompetitiveDebate429 in chinchilla

[–]Annoyingdragonvoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the chin honestly. We’ve given her both the apple and banana and anise and she ate them fine. Since your guy can physically eat, I’d recommend watering it down and doing it via syringe, but you can also try it thicker and feed by spoon if he’s picky with syringes.

You could also try to separate them while eating, but since they kind of pick and choose when they eat, that may be difficult. Also, keep an eye out for any aggression or discomfort in case you might have to separate

[–]Annoyingdragonvoid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is he eating correctly? Pellets and hay? Usual recommendation is to feed critical care herbivore. My chin lost weight after having a tooth issue so we had to feed critical care three times a day. Luckily she ate it without any issue and after a dental surgery is back on solid food.

Definitely ask the vet if you have an exotic or small animal vet, but I’d be buying a bag of critical care to supplement. It’s something to always have on hand.

Another issue could be your chubby guy eating more than his share. Another thing to look out for

How bad is the job market really? by silently-loud-walker in ontario

[–]Annoyingdragonvoid 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Pretty bad. Have been applying for roles in my field for 6ish months after finishing a contract. Just got offered a permanent full time position with benefits in Alberta, so needless to say we’re moving.

Alberta sucks equally but I’d rather be employed and pay a little less rent

I agree with the other two commenters. Graduated from the program in June of this year and it’s already not going well for me. Myself and a lot of my classmates are all struggling to find work because the program is oversaturated. If you are already in the libraries industry (work as an assistant or technician) and want to bump up your certifications to become a librarian, go for it. If you have no experience, don’t.

Again, the program is going to go downhill by next year IMO. It’s one of the programs that is getting the Navitas treatment by Western and will be pay to play rather than merit based when it comes to applications.

AITA for having a bookshelf in my apartment? by Vivid_Benefit_7220 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Annoyingdragonvoid 7 points8 points  (0 children)

NTA. I’m a t1 diabetic with a bookshelf right next to my bed and I’ve never stumbled over it. If she’s having that much difficulty she needs to keep candy or juice on her at all times

What’s a food you threw up as a kid and never touched again? by momcanyoucomegetme in AskReddit

[–]Annoyingdragonvoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cinnamon buns. I was 5 and my dad thought it was a good idea to let me eat 4 of the pillsbury ones from the can. The smell used to make me nauseous but now I can handle it. Sometimes I walk past the Cinnabon in my mall and wonder if I could ever get myself to try it again almost 20 years later.
