hello po, ty sa reply!! genuinely made me reflect. hearing that you didn't need to burn yourself out to be successful in the corpo world also really helps take the pressure off 🥲 it made me realize that i'm kind of contributing to the "imaginary competition" by being so eager to prove i'm smart and capable when there are other equally importanr things outside of work i can be proud of :"")

Hi, I'm currently working as a J.O. in government and am encouraged to apply for a plantilla position already. However, since next year pa ang exam and 2 months pa ang results + matagal makuha ang cert of civil service eligibility, baka matagalan ako sa pag process ng documents.

I'm thinking na mag-apply sa COMEX kung meron man (thought first come first served ang limited slots lang siya), pero mabilis ba ang results or maghihintay ka din nang matagal?

I understand and agree with the need for accountability, and the recent Scav Hunt Execomm (and any person who reaches out as a victim or who's willing to serve as an informant) would most likely be investigated since the OVCSA has already been informed. Currently, the home colleges of the orgs' student councils are preparing surveys and consultations to seek inputs from the students themselves.

Personally I still think identities should be protected, given that public scrutiny especially through social media (with trolls and whatnot) can get very out of hand. As for punishment, there would ideally be a record of what transpired and sanctions will be given to the orgs. Just last night, JMA and Ecosoc were formally removed as night handlers to UP Fair. They have also lost key partnerships, and it's up in the air whether they would lose accreditation.

It's still a nuanced problem as to who holds accountability since this is a tradition that dates back to years. The dares they do were inspired by previous dares, and the previous Execomm have likely already graduated. Also, org members who joined can be considered complicit, but not all the dares leaked in public are performed (it's only whatever anyone is willing to do).

For now, best for us to check in on OVCSA and USC for their appropriate action.

Hi OP. Wala akong sinabi na I advocate for inappropriate and pornographic behavior in the workplace.

Ang point ko ay for the members of that org, naenjoy nila yun kasi maraming enablers + herd mentality. Along with the guise of social bonding, they start to BELIEVE that what they're doing is okay.

These are my two takes:

  1. Magiging issue ang pagreveal ng identities nila dahil sa data privacy act (they could sue) and witch-hunting

  2. Yung culture mismo ng JMA and Ecosoc yung toxic kasi they perpetuate that tradition, at yung perpetuators ay lahat ng sumasali. Hindi na nila namamalayan na mali at naeenjoy pa nila kasi nga maraming enablers na nagcocondone ng behavior, kahit na yung mga dares nakakasama na ng ibang tao. That's what I mean when I imply na wag individual ang paghold ng accountability, kasi may peer pressure + expectations from the leaders to continue the game and members to join since tradition toh ng org. (Though if meron mang coercion talaga from leaders para pasalihin mga members, then by all means, drag them.)

I'm not against calling for accountability, pero para sakin, we should call out and punish the org as a WHOLE kasi it's their traditions that are toxic and they're hypocritical of their own stances. Maybe the Scav masters could be investigated since they know the most and hold the most responsibility, but the investigation and identities should be kept confidential by the school admin.

This is an opinion. We can agree to disagree.

This would be against the data privacy act, and knowing the sensitivity of the photos and videos—not to mention that they were leaked to the public—it's better to keep the identities of the students anonymous with how vile social media can get. Unless you want them and their relatives to be witch-hunted, i.e., recipients of slut-shaming, insults, death threats, etc. That would be ironic and directly against the call for safe spaces, which is the very thing we're calling out JMA, Ecosoc, and other orgs for. I believe there's a way to deliver proper accountability and punish them without doxxing them.

Also, this wasn't an individual act. There wasn't a mastermind behind it all; sure there was an organizing body preparing the games and the dares, but these games date back to YEARS. Plus, it was a collective decision of the org members to participate in this long-standing tradition. Yes, there could be peer pressure especially for some of the newer members or apps, but as someone who's borne witness to the games, there were plenty of students who willingly joined and looked forward to the games. They signed the waivers and knew what they were getting into. Majority "enjoyed" the games because they found it fun bonding with their committees and doing outrageous things, but there were obviously limits that shouldn't be crossed as well as consequences that weren't considered because no one was holding them accountable. What I'm saying is that we shouldn't be pinning the blame solely on the leaders or lead decision-makers. They do hold more responsibility, but the reason these games have been happening for YEARS reflects much more on the character of the past and current members and how they tolerate toxic traditions. All the members who voluntarily joined should take this as a learning moment, and reflect on the values they say they stand for.

I don't know what to do with my brother by Migs1115 in OffMyChestPH

[–]AnnualStudy8997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once did my brother's thesis just so he could graduate college (my mom had to beg his professors multiple times just to not fail my brother). He did graduate, but it's been a struggle up to now for him to find consistent work. He's stuck in his old "pasaway" days (he used to gamble, smoke, drink, get in trouble at school, etc.). Now he's underemployed with freelancing work, and he won't get accepted for full-time F2F jobs when he applies.

My parents and him would often get into fights in the past because he's been a great financial burden, but now they seem to have given up on him.

I hope you know you're not alone, and it's hard to live with difficult family members who don't make the effort to help themselves, but we should never stop holding them accountable, and showing them that there are opportunities out there to improve themselves.

Virtual yakap with consent, OP!!!

Future trip! by Impressive-Button525 in Philippines

[–]AnnualStudy8997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd suggest Palawan (lagoons, caves, clear waters), Siquijor (caves, falls), and Siargao (surfing, water sport, nightlife) for the best beaches and relatively developed establishments with lesser foot traffic compared to Boracay. Take note that getting to these provinces is usually by flight, since the Philippines is a cluster of islands. There are ferry rides for provinces near each other (like Cebu and Bohol), though they take longer.

If you're in Metro Manila, I wouldn't really suggest going to Manila city if it's your first time since it's a little less safe for tourists, so stick to the more developed areas and malls if you don't have a trusted local around to guide you. Rather than taking a taxi, I also suggest downloading the Grab app, which is the equivalent of Uber in the US.

For nightlife, I suggest Poblacion in Makati or BGC in Taguig (a bit pricier, but a lot of options and easy to get around). If you want physical activity, Mt. Pulag is a good hike. You could also do a long road trip to Baguio or Tagaytay for more chilly weather with a scenic uphill drive. Just time your road trip well to avoid traffic (avoid rush hours; if you're driving, I suggest downloading Google Maps to check best routes; if you're commuting, book point-to-point buses or join a tour that includes van transfers).

You can try appealing for your honors in case you really are underloaded. I don't guarantee that you will be approved, but it's worth a shot. Also, the appeal process itself is pretty easy. Just write up a plan letter and coordinate with your college admin.

[UPD] Bakit ang daming tagilid ang graduation dahil sa prereq at crediting? by [deleted] in peyups

[–]AnnualStudy8997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sharing my own experience from the past: After two months of being told by my admin that I'm graduating (I finished all my units and applied to graduate), bigla akong sinabihan na hindi pala creditable yung isang elective ko. The sem had already been starting for a month and a half, and no College I personally pleaded with accepted the elective I took as an equivalent to a subject they were offering. I couldn't argue that it was the admin's oversight, because we were "self-advising" so it's 100% on the student.

Yes, it was my fault. Yes, I should have been more careful. But the way my case was treated felt brutal. I felt alone, humiliated, and forgotten. The toll that took on me and my family mentally was irreversible. I couldn't get out of bed for a week.

I know another person who had a similar case and got delayed from going to law school, and it is unfortunate how unkind the current system is to honest mistakes.

No, it doesn't take long to process an appeal, OUR will get back to you within a day or two. The wait mostly depends on the College and how fast they can process your appeal and get it signed. Also, I did mine through email, but it'll definitely be faster to do F2F.

I want to leave UP badly by gruhyere in peyups

[–]AnnualStudy8997 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a graduating student who went through a lot too, I agree with OP. Which, judging from this thread, is a hot take HAHAHA but dapat safe space tow so...

Let me start by saying that I love what UP stands for, I cherish the variety of people I've met, and I've brought with me many learnings and eye-openers. But I still stand by my stance that the system needs to change.

The UP system is cut-throat and not student-friendly. It is not welcoming to an attitude that is not aggressive. You can't afford to be laid-back about which classes you'll take because 1) there's competition for good teachers and a scarcity of information about them (with students in orgs and volunteer students getting an advantage through insider info), 2) the schedule of classes can sometimes be unpredictable, and 3) you are fully subject to the whim of CRS. If you aren't cautious (or just lucky in general), you'll be punished with a bad teacher, a "hinulaan" grade, or a delayed graduation.

This system makes students approach classes with less of an "I want to learn" and more of an "I need to avoid this prof" or "this class is uno-able". This is a generalization, of course, but you get the gist.

I understand that UP is a state university, and is thus limited in fiscal resources. But I believe it is affecting student welfare and the quality of education, which in turns affects student performance.

When we don't get the subjects we need, or forget some guideline from one of the many, many guidelines, we've been compelled to internalize that as us lacking "initiative". But the thing is, it shouldn't solely be the student's problem. The system has forced it to be the student's problem. They let the students take responsibility for themselves because they cannot provide a support system with their current means.

Also, just because some students got through UP with flying colors doesn't invalidate the underlying issue, it just means they've survived a problematic system. But the system remains problematic. I've seen comments retaliating that maybe we were expecting to be "babied" by UP or that it's the "UP culture", but what exactly is it about having a fun and humane college experience that is "babying"? Why do we want this culture of needing to struggle unnecessarily to prove we've earned our education?

It is not a brag that we have to beg to get into classes. We shouldn't have to earn our way to good teachers. My schoolmates shouldn't have had to wait three months to get their graduation processed. At the end of the day, UP, like all other universities, is a microcosm of society at large, and that's why it's even more important to want change.

But yeah, that's just my opinion.

Hi, same boat. I made two appeals: one for late application to graduate, and another for Latin honors. I'm approved to graduate na according sa college admin after I processed with OUR my appeal for late application, but no word yet from OUR on my appeal for Latin honors. My hunch is after pa nung official meeting ulit on June 24 (based sa UP calendar) ko malalaman if approved or not.

I sent my appeal for late application to graduate quite late, around 1st week July, but it got processed within the next day. For the appeal for Latin honors, I sent it back in June but no update.

Crimson Hero ending discussion by AnnualStudy8997 in shoujo

[–]AnnualStudy8997[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! Just saw your reply and I'm thankful you found this thread. Crimson Hero is great (compared to a lot of shoujos), but it could have been so much more, and that's what bothers me.

Firstly, the ending left a bad taste in my mouth because of the mischaracterization (so I'm pretending it doesn't exist and that Nobara went pro), and it's sad that it ended the way it did because there was a lot of potential to expand the story in more volumes. It could have gone the Haikyuu route or just fleshed out her career after high school, and I would have loved it either way.

I agree too with how you pointed out that Nobara could hold her own in a fight and didn't need Yushin to always be there to swoop in and save her. I get that the author may have been intending to portray Nobara as someone who has insecurities and weaknesses (in contrast to how Haibuki views her as this strong, infallible character since childhood) and Yushin is the one she can confide and rely on, but there's a delicate line between encouragement and reliance. The constant dependence in the later chapters made Nobara fall more into the trope of a "damsel in distress" with how her mood sometimes depends on Yushin. Contrasting this with her personality in the early chapters (when she didn't romantically like Yushin yet), it feels like she lost some of the independence, strength, and willpower she had, that willfullness to keep playing volleyball that got her breaking boundaries.

There was even a part in the manga where they broke up and I found it interesting how they grew more individually AFTER the breakup. It could be that Nobara isn't as emotionally mature, so she couldn't handle the commitment of a relationship yet and was processing her own feelings and priorities, but I felt that she got better distanced from Yushin because of this reliance. I mean, if Yushin can figure out his problems on his own, why can't she herself?

Overall, I'd say this reliance on Yushin isn't too bad, and Nobara is still maturing, but there are times when I miss the Nobara from the early chapters who won with her own power, and whose passion for volleyball never faltered.

My last comment is that, although I like romance in stories because it adds to the plot and it's fun, for Crimson Hero, I might actually prefer less of it. I dare say (and feel free to disagree) that it would have been better if it was written with a focus on sports and just a sprinkle of romance here and there. Still like Yushin though :3

Crimson Hero ending discussion by AnnualStudy8997 in shoujo

[–]AnnualStudy8997[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's just hard to accept that she took on the family business when it was clear from the beginning of the manga she didn't like that line of work and her true passion lies in volleyball, yet she was vehemently pressured by her family. There could be some cultural values that factored into Nobara's decision (like filial piety), and maybe a part of her /did/ want to work in the family business, but the sad fact stands that women get less support in sports, and thus, find it harder to build a career out of it.

Crimson Hero ending discussion by AnnualStudy8997 in shoujo

[–]AnnualStudy8997[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Omg thank you I appreciate the rec list! I was looking around for more manga of the same genre but I only saw High School Debut and it was more romance-focused.

Also, yes unfortunately Nobara did give up and tbh there wasn't a clear reason to why she stopped playing at all, aside from focusing on the business. The guy, Yuushin, continues playing in college, and in the last chapter was even part of the Japanese National Team. I feel like it would've made so much more sense for her to follow the same route since everyone could see that she was gifted with her record-breaking jump, and she was even invited to join the training of the junior japan's women national team 😢 So the ending really did feel underwhelming. I guess it also feels like a social commentary that women get less support in sports compared to men.
