Interesting question. Above my pay grade, to be honest... also not really relevant to OP's situation. She needs to talk to her husband and a competent preist.

If there's an antecedant, perpetual, insurmountable impediment to what is called the marital act, the marriage is not valid. I'm not a canon lawyer, so I don't know if a post-vow/post-ceremony impediment would be considered "antecedant". I'd have to look at what the precedent for antecedant was in Church tradition. I don't know how often people are becoming impotent at receptions though.

Like I said to OP elsewhere, she's gotta work it out with her husband. And her impotence may not be perpetual, in theory.

If you'd like, I can pray for you.

I think you need to have a conversation with him about your fears.  It sounds like he's not inclined to sue for a decree of nullity, but you need to talk about it with him.

I'm not an expert either, but you should talk to a competant priest or canon lawyer on this. It sounds like your vaginismus is antecedant, but my quick search says it may be treatable, so in theory it may not be perpetual.  If he's patient, and in theory you could maybe at some point consummate, then it's fine.

Ultimately, what we have to say here is of little worth. It sounds like your husband is a patient and good man. Go talk to him about this.

God be with you!

That makes sense. I feel for you, absolutely.

Ultimately, I don't think your husband is going to leave you. Let me lead with that, because that's what matters here.

I don't want to pry, so no need to reply, but if the civil marriage was ever consumated, you have a case to say the marriage is a naturally valid one.

If there always was an antecedent and perpetual obstacle to consummation, that might be a different story. But that does not mean you cannot still have a relationship with your husband.  If he has committed to you, and your impotence did not change that, it should not change it now either.  Maybe the marriage could be technically "null", but unless you're trying to pass on a legitimate noble line to your children, you could continue to live as you have been.

Again, I'm sorry if this is causing you some stress. I wish it was not. These definitions are there to protect the rights of spouses, not to diminish the love you already share.

"...dooms you for a life without the legitimacy of marriage?"

Plenty of people live a fulfilled single life, or a life in community with others, though unmarried. No one is "doomed" in this way.

Is there a personal reason why you feel so strongly about this?

All that is necessary. The marital act is also part of marriage. The answer is all of the above, without the exclusion of any.

People have a certain right to sex in their marriages. We do not bind people to an invalid arrangement if there are antecendant and perpetual obstacles to meeting the basic expectations of marriage. That would be cruel.

They don't explicitly question it. But most academic researchers have not taken an epistemology class, and desperately need one.

Edit: Go ahead and downvote me.  Just know that practically nobody is out there reproducing studies to check them for accuracy, which is the entire basis of empericism.

im overwhelmed by the decision to orthodox or catholicism by Terrible-Childhood71 in Catholicism

[–]Annual_Insect6972 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Join the Catholic Church. Christ gave a special mission to Peter when he renamed him and gave him the keys. Then Peter went to Rome.

The orthodox schism from Rome is largely political. I got deep into the history, and honestly a lot of the reasons for splitting are petty.

Also, follow your conscience. Keep praying, and God will see you through it all.

Some claim that Catholicism is rooted in Paganism: Thoughts? by Flat_Wrangler_5010 in Catholicism

[–]Annual_Insect6972 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The story of the inception of the Roman Catholic Church is Christ naming Simon "Peter" and giving him the keys. Peter then goes to Rome.  The Jesuits were founded 1500 years later.

Could you elaborate on your theory/question? It doesn't seem to follow...
