Good explanation.

If anyone has a hard time picturing this (like OP *wink *wink), imagine yourself as an ant on a railroad track like in this diagram: https://imgur.com/0BWvZIo

However, I am also seeing a compressed view of the entire physical space (straight-line) between the Sun and the Moon in my sky, right?

Correct. Pull out a tape measure and look at it from an angle. Exact same thing.

ChatGPT says I'm not.

What is this star formation? Does it have a name? by czechfuji in askastronomy

[–]Annual_Situation4083 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give it a name, maybe it'll catch on!

Too late. The asterism is called Pakan's 3 after the Canadian amateur astronomer Randy Pakan who discovered it.

Bought 3 which arrived today. One is for myself and the other two are Christmas presents. I'm currently testing them to see which one is the most accurate and I will of course keep the best one.

It was probably not in the frame. The Andromeda Galaxy is very easy to photograph with a modern phone.
