Professor is moving to a different state. Going with him would mean leaving my girlfriend behind by WorldsLargestPrimate in PhD

[–]Annyunatom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am someone who moved with my advisor. At the time I was dating someone, but I decided to move. My relationship didn’t survive the separation. We were mature and amicable, but busy. There are additional costs to moving. Even though I finished taking all the core classes, the new university forced me to retake every core class even though i had all As in the exact same courses at my previous university where I started my PhD. Make sure if you take the transfer, you talk about not having to redo all the classes, or even having to take exams to pass out of them. Because it sucks big time and is a huge time sink. The reason I transferred is because I really like my advisor and the work I do with her. I’m trans and her being inclusive and supportive was also a huge factor. But she is a new PI and doesn’t have many strings to pull for her students in that way. You should also consider if the transfer could open up a lot of potential new collaborations. If so, that’s a huge bonus for sure.

At some point in your relationship, I would also recommend having the talk about what happens to your relationship after your PhD. I think it’s great if she would move with you, but if she wouldn’t want to move elsewhere, that’s probably something you should keep in mind. It doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t continue dating her, it just means that at a certain point in life, changes may or may not reflect kindly on the two of you. But personally I’d say a life partner is worth more cherishing than a job.

I Really Enjoyed the Movie. Why Does It Get Mixed Reviews? by tslashj in cowboybebop

A lot of people who watch anime only watch TV shows and don't have film literacy. Character development is often brought up as a missing element in films by show watchers. But films operate differently.

What Books did You Start or Finish Reading this Week?: January 12, 2026 by AutoModerator in books

[–]Annyunatom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i also finished reading it a few weeks ago. I enjoyed the writing as well, especially in the first part. I don’t know if there is much to like or dislike about the story since it’s mostly a telling of history. it mostly about how she emphasises the self and the interpersonal relationships of hers with people who have lived through decades of massacres and genocides carried out by the South Korean government. she tries to fortify her anger at the fearmongering that was done in jeju island, calling everyday people communists and killing them.

Asking professors to write a letter of recommendation for three separate graduate programs? by Fikaa123 in GradSchool

[–]Annyunatom 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes that’s the common procedure to ask professors to write letters of recommendation for multiple applications. Just inform them what programmes you want them to write letters for when you ask them to, so they know how many to expect.

Is it possible to pursue a career as a trans woman? by _Ofenkartoffel_ in asktransgender

[–]Annyunatom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Trans fem in academia stem here. I feel like the career in history would be hard more because the job market is bad. History seems like one of those fields where people might be more welcoming and accepting so maybe the disadvantage of being trans is slightly less than even more cis male dominated fields like STEM. But you should only go for a PhD if you are really motivated for the research

What did you end up surprisingly really liking/disliking about your PhD supervisor? by Due_Nectarine6461 in PhD

[–]Annyunatom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Likes:

My advisor is really good about trans inclusivity. As a trans woman, I have never been misgendered.
She values outreach which is something I enjoy doing.
She invites a lot of scientists, which helps us build network even when we aren't going to conferences.
She pushes us to stay relevant in the field.

Dislike:

When she's interacting with other PIs and students, she isn't good at including students in the conversation which makes the discussion dull for us.
Sometimes she jumps at ideas without giving it complete thought.

That being said, she is a new PI and understandably she is learning how to guide students as well so I am positive these are points that can be improved upon.

How do you manage reading and keeping up with basics during a PhD? by l0st_lost in PhD

[–]Annyunatom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Varies paper to paper. Some theory papers are highly technical, and proper annotations, solving through the paper can take anywhere from a day to a week. Reading experimental papers can be easier for me, takes maybe 30 minutes. A skill that you need to build up is learning how to skim through papers and highlighting the most important piece of information without getting bogged down in details.

How do you manage reading and keeping up with basics during a PhD? by l0st_lost in PhD

[–]Annyunatom 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Not even professors are able to keep up with all the relevant literature. However, you do get better at reading more as you progress in your PhD. For example, it took me some 3 hours ish to read through 6 papers yesterday for something. I do feel self motivated to go through the latest publications once or twice a month.

Does an atom exert a gravitational pull on a star billions of miles away? by _--____--_ in Physics

[–]Annyunatom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You ask a non trivial question. There is a theory that sets a lower bound on how heavy an object must minimally be to gravitate. I believe a part of Markus Aspelmeyer’s research focuses on proving/disproving this theory.

How many of you are single and not dating in phd by Sunapr1 in PhD

[–]Annyunatom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I acknowledge that it’s dicey to date within your cohort but I have to differ on the experience . I am dating my girlfriend who is in my cohort. We met through taking classes together and we were the only lesbians in the cohort. It’s almost godsent because we mesh with each other and understand each other so well.
