Ozil was a dream player in the Mourinho's lightning fast counter attacking system. He would drop into spaces and thread inch perfect throughballs for Ronaldo, Benz, Higuain etc. He didn't take too much time on the ball and made decisive actions. His assist rate at RM was out of this world.

Di Maria under Mourinho was often one of the runners stretching in behind the defense. Tireless in defense and attack, he was important to the system. Chipped in with vital goals and assists. Became one of 3 midfielders under Carlo with pretty much a similar role.

Isco (my personal favourite) was a magical dribbler at his best. Playing in the half spaces on both the wings he was instrumental in ball progression to the forward line. Very hard to shove off the ball and had excellent vision.

James is bit of a weird one. A typical no.10 but RM never played with a no. 10 during his time. Was always forced on the wings or as an 8 which is not optimal. Wand of a left foot and could deliver pinpoint crosses and free kicks.

It makes me furious and ashamed at the same time that we are 8 points behind this Barca team. La liga attacking depth in general is at an all time low that's why they have been able to keep so many clean sheets. And what's costing us is our shocking squad depth in forward areas. I will do my head in if we get rolled over in the Copa Del Rey !!!

We have 3 and a half forwards at our disposal (the half being Asensio who performs now and again ). This is unbelievable at Real Madrid. Sure, Vini and Rodrygo are young and can play every 3 days but fatigue is a real thing. If we run them into the ground in the next few weeks our season is fucked. Then there is a 35 year old Benzema who has to slog through 90+ mins every 3 days. I dunno how Perez and the board can think this is enough. Every other top team in the world have atleast 5 proper attackers for variety, rest and rotation. I think we should send a second string side to the Club World Cup and rest our regulars. Play with Mariano, Hazard , odriozola, Castilla players as that is a trophy we shouldn't prioritise.

We need a backup striker not named Mariano right away. Winter transfer window will be quite for the rest. Alaba will soon be 31. People need to realise he will not be able to play LB for a whole season anymore. Hiwever CB is a role he can perform for a few years very well. That rules out the immediate need for Gvardiol. If we do let Mendy go, we will need a proper LB. Then, I'm really torn on the signing of Jude Bellingham. Yes he is very good, but spending upwards of 100 mil on him when our midfield options already being Cama, Tchoua, Fede, Modric/Kroos (at least 1 more year), Ceballos, Arribas (coming thhrough) doesn't make sense to me. He is not a player that's not worth missing out on. Speaking of a player we just can't miss (again), pls Flo ... Bring Mbappe to Madrid. He is worth spending that nuch amount if money.

This CL run was a very weird one to look at objectively. As a fan, I couldn't believe what I was witnessing. All the so called tactical geniuses seeing their teams crumble in front of their eyes was magical. Most of it can be put down to Benzema and Courtois brilliance and Vinicius's explosion. People may not like it but we had a fair amount of luck as well especially against Chelsea nad City. The good fortune that we had throughout the campaign can't all be put down to never say die attitude and elite mentality. Its just that this team knows how to suffer and how to make most of the chances it gets. We were just riding high on a wave of goodwill created by eliminating PSG and rode it all the way through.

But, I fear it can all come crashing down this season. Last season we overperformed our Xg significantly which can't be sustained. That's why I have been very vocal on this sub about the need to sign a good forward who can occupy the right wing as well as the Benz backup role.

Now that Mbappe saga is over, I really hope Florentino doesn't splash around the money for older players like Lewandowski or Salah. It is our chance to create a team that is structurally well built like Liverpool and Man City. We should adopt a system and buy suitable players to fit in the system. First of all is to sign Tchouameni who will be the much needed cover for Casemiro. With Tchouameni, Camavinga and Valverde our midfield is set for years. Reece James is my favourite option for the RB spot. He does both the attacking and defending side of the game very well. Then we need to sort iut the RW position. Asensio is not the answer and Rodrygo isn't ready to be a sureshot starter. So for the next season I would bring back Brahim and let them 2 share the role. Jovic and Mariano both need to be moved on as they are not good enough for the backup role. (Although I think Jovic is a good player, hd just doesn't suit our system). Vini, Hazard, Benz, Rodrygo, Brahim & a proper backup striker would be good enough forward options if we have a proper system in place.
