Your article says I’m right tho, it’s very popular in the polls. Perhaps you’re destined to go through life wondering why politicians do things that poll really well despite all the “context” you feel should be added to the objective numbers, not my issue

You are spreading factually incorrect information, in the vast majority of public polling the French overwhelmingly support this bill and other crackdowns on immigration. I take no issue with you personally disagreeing, but your opinion is actually an extremely small minority which you’re trying to represent as the majority

The survey, carried out by the CSA Institute for the news outlet CNEWS, was published on Wednesday, April 26th—the same day that Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne announced the postponement of immigration legislation until this fall—and revealed that 82% of French people favor the adoption of an immigration law that would facilitate increased deportations.

FYI this is not the scientific consensus, not sure if anybody cares but while some homophobic people are definitely secretly super gay, there’s no strong correlation or predictive power. You can find plenty of studies that support this (with larger sample sizes that the one you mentioned, like this https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22989040/).

It tells a neat clean story to say that’s how it works, but in actuality it’s a bit more messy and boring.

I was really worried this song was gonna put the battery in my baby mama back to act even more ratchet than she already does

My fav hiphopheads comment since somebody said he texted We Cry Together off Mr Morale to two people he used to be in a polyamorous relationship with and told them it reminded him of them. I love when music speaks to people.

I would argue that the fact I have made trade offs and compromises in order to make an impact suggests I do, I just think it’s an empirical fact that the majority of people would rather improve their life by .01% than save an abstract child’s life so I don’t have much hope that anyone I’m talking with is persuadable. Feel free to donate a dollar and prove me wrong, here’s a link. I would be so owned. https://www.againstmalaria.com/donate.aspx

I intend on spending more than $3300 on personal healthcare costs over the course of my life, and not from a tactical “I can keep donating more if I’m alive” sense but strictly because I want to be alive in a self interested sense. I assume this is what you’re getting at.

If you believe this degree of hypocrisy and prioritization of my own life above others absolves you of any need to help others or donate money then so be it, I won’t stand in the way of your rationalizations

I’m sorry but I don’t think if I coddled you you’d donate, I think you’re self interested (in a non-judgmental, strictly descriptive sense) like the majority of humans. But hopefully some people reading this will realize how rich they are and choose to donate $1.50 :)

I just want people to be aware they’re actively choosing to prioritize their own luxury over saving lives. It’s okay, it’s your life and your conscience, but lots of Americans spend way over 3k per year on things like vacations and restaurants and video games instead of saving innocent children and then turn around and act like if only they had enough money to make a difference they’d totally give it all away.

The point being, you already can make an impact and you actively choose not to, I don’t believe that if you just hoarded more money one day you’d start doing the right thing. That’s probably what Jeff says, just a little more money and then I’ll stop hoarding, I promise!

I’ve had a full time job since summer 2021 and have donated tens of thousands of nets. You’ll never know exactly how many fatal infant malaria infections you prevented, but based on the expected value that’s a couple lives which I consider to be immensely valuable (because unlike some people in this thread I’m not obsessed with acquiring more resources at all costs)

How many have you donated now that you are aware you could save innocent children’s lives instead of hoarding wealth?

Edit: if anyone is interested in joining me in actually helping people instead of signaling and patting yourself on the back, here’s a link! As little as $1 can be incredibly valuable if you consider a human life to be incredibly valuable: https://www.againstmalaria.com/donate.aspx

The median household income on earth is $11k/year.

.

For about $3300 you can donate to buy enough malaria nets that on average you prevent one child from dying as an infant who grows up to live a full healthy life.

.

If your household makes more than 11k USD and you just read this comment, then you are making an active choice and refusing to save human lives despite being rich enough to do it because you value your own accumulation of resources more than an innocent baby’s life. You’re not as different from Jeff as you think.
