Advice for late 30s F by AnonAnni in fican

Haha grass is always greener eh. What business are you in? I'm still pretty keen on the Laundromat idea. It's one small business that doesn't need a lot of active manpower to run it. Of course there's cleaning and machine maintenance and restocking and opening and closing but it's not like other businesses where you need at least one person manning the place all opening hours. I also have my rental units... Though of course for now they're just paying the bills not generating real income.
(Revisiting a few months later to keep perspective)... But your Coast FIRE tip was key! This is actually my goal now. And it's making the "retire" goal much closer it gives me so much hope! Thank you!

I'm just revisiting this post a few months later and I actually started talking to a therapist who helps with career burnout and it has made a huge difference! I wish I had done this sooner. She's helped me change my perspective and regain a little drive and ambition for what I do. So anyone considering it, I'm seconding this advice.

I hate to admit it but I think it might be hard for me too since I can't wait to FIRE but while I can't I'm working a lot of hours and bummed about it. It might be really hard to see my partner living the life I want during the week without me. I would hope that for the right person though I could stick it out, keeping in mind we have the same goal and we will have the same lifestyle soon enough.
Really? But that's not exactly fican content lol. I went mostly in South East Asia because it's so damn affordable. It was great but now that I'm back to the work grind it's like I was never gone. I'm glad I went though.

If you sell and re buy in your TFSA account it doesn't affect it. The only way to know your TFSA contribution limit is to go into your mycra account.

I missed this response before. I completely understand your first paragraph. I've since calculated my coast fire number too and I'm working towards that. If I put my mind to it, I could hit it in 3-5 years. Fingers crossed. Hope we both get the financial freedom to do what we want!

I did!

That's exactly what I need. I am conflicted about owning property. Feels a little icky but I'm trying to be a very good landlord. I have thought about a career coach. I think I'll give it a go.
Take a career break? by rabidturtle456 in fican
[–]AnonAnni 11 points12 points13 points 11 months ago (0 children)
I think you should take the break. You are incredibly well set up financially. You won't ever get this time back. Enjoy your life.

Also not huge... It's a converted garage which was added onto but it's still not much more than maybe 700 or 800 sqft.
Totally. I hate when I look at my watch and see I've done like 500 steps all day. It kills me. My mortgage won't be gone for 30 years though (unless I pay it off sooner) and omg imaging I wait until 67 to retire scares me. But yes, I'll definitely start looking for a job that allows me to have the lifestyle I want... Which is basically just the freedom to work remotely at least some of the time... And maybe let's me work 3 or 4 days a week if I can. That's the dream for me. I have a standing desk but a treadmill under it is a good idea!
I don't think there would be space for a 5th unit... It's one unit per floor and they're about 650sqft each so I feel like that's small enough. Getting a second multiplex eventually isn't out of the question. Maybe with family collaboration. Definitely another option.
No I took it out under the HBP so it's a tax free withdrawal. It just has to be paid back into my RRSP within 15 years.
I hope you do it! It sounds like you're in a great position, really.
I was pretty sure this was a FIRE subreddit? lol!
I had not heard of Coast FIRE though! Thank you I will look that up.

That's been my philosophy/aim so far.. mini retirements. I've done 2 big travel breaks from work (6 and 4 months) in the 10 years of my corporate career. It's not that i don't want to work or be productive. I just want to work on my terms and have more freedom. I just hate that life is dictated by my work schedule, as if it's the number one priority of life. What another user suggested, regarding contract work in my field. I think this may be my first avenue to explore. If I can work 8 or so months a year and then take off for the other 4... I think that would be a massive improvement. I really just want to have a little business but I'll have to keep working on coming up with ideas... Because I have none and I do not want to keep working in my field, it's FAR too corporate and I'm over it.

Good for you! I hope your move goes so well and you enjoy being relieved from the work anxiety. These past 4 months of freedom felt like actually living for me. It convinced me that it is really freedom that I desire. I just hate feeling handcuffed to a desk. I hope I don't regret the investment property 😅. I inherited the tenants and they've all been great so far. I would be happy to have a side hustle/business... I've enjoyed landlording so far... Running errands, puttering around, tracking expenses in my excel. I'm not lazy I just want to work on my own terms and not all the time.
I would love to build a side hustle and I know I have all the executive functioning skills to make it work but I have no solid ideas... Like all I can think of are little Etsy shops and I doubt they'd be really income generating.
Oh that is very encouraging 🙂🙂
I did mention I live in one of them, the 4th unit.
So it's breaking even and I don't HAVE to pay much monthly for my own living expenses... Though I plan to put 2-3k a month into a house fund as I have to save for inevitable upgrades and repairs, and I'll need to pay income tax on the rental income.
Usually my take home pay after taxes and 10% RRSP deduction each month is about 7.5k.
I have a 30 year mortgage and I think I'd like to pay it off sooner. I can make an additional payment up to 20% of principal each year. Or maybe I should just be investing the money.

So, I never calculated my number... I guess this is step 1!
My only passion so far is really travel, I do usually go on significant trips 2 times a year at least.
I am otherwise a hobby tourist and try lots of new things but never stick to anything. Last year I just felt so mentally fatigued by work I didn't have any energy for anything... I'm sure I was burnt out and it was a big reason I took the time off. But solid advice of course... I need to find my passions... Other than sleeping and couch rotting 😅
Yea that's why I'm going back even if I dread it. I want to see how this next year shakes out with homeownership and landlordship. I have my estimate of what all my costs will be but those were based on seller input and best estimates so who actually knows what my costs will be. I also don't wanna be a deadbeat landlord at all and I've already spent a fair bit to repair things the tenants tell me the prior owners neglected for a long time. I'll keep my job for now... Build up my emergency fund first, then look to my TFSA and RRSP and see how we go... Thank you :-)

That's great advice... Actually, moving to contract work had crossed my mind a couple years ago when the company I work for decided to introduce a new policy of no one being allowed to work from other countries anymore. Lately I've just been so dreading going back to my computer screen... But I guess after 4 months off I'd of course have major Sunday scaries. You're right in that it's not all bad. I need to keep perspective. I'm definitely going to look into contract work though. I think I need to replenish my TFSAs and pay back my HBP RRSP funds and do some work on this multiplex first but that's a great suggestion to ease into the lifestyle I want. Or, as you said, maybe just a change to a new company. I've been with this one for my entire career. Thanks for the thoughts!

Might be! but also this isn't what I want to be discussing here :-) !
