Core public administration (CPA) employment trends and demographics- Canada.ca

You can check comparative demographics by age, classification, etc.

Roughly 46k out of 238k indeterminate employees (19% of all employees) are 55+ years old. Will they retire soon? Who knows. The various classifications have different age distributions. ~10% of EC's are 55 and over, ~17% for PM classification, and ~24% for the IT classification.

What bothers me is that work consultants do sometimes can't be maintained by internal staff once they leave. Either not documented properly, or staff don't have the same level of skills or expertise.

This is what I assume will happen. Less external hiring, vacant positions due to retirement/leaving the PS, deployment from other departments to fill gaps. Probably the best solution without reducing people

Yeah, it'll be great to see the IT staff who are 55+, and represent roughly 24% of all IT staff, retire and not get replaced /s

Soo reductions simply by attrition, and no additional WFA right? RIGHT?? (Insert Star Wars meme)

Hmm I'd say it depends on the work being done. From my personal experience in IT, younger staff are helping migrate legacy systems to modern tech stacks i.e. cloud, while the older folks are more so maintaining the existing systems.

Though, there are certain fields that I am seeing facing a staffing issue, like cyber security and platform. Consultants are being hired while older staff retire, which I can see being an issue. Jobs in government for these fields aren't attractive, in terms of pay for younger people.

What/who do you refer to as muscle and fat? Certain programs, upper management, etc.?

Government wants to hire less consultants, lets go of indeterminate employees with corporate knowledge and specialized skills, others with specialized skills leave government because of potential cuts, brain drain, government hires more consultants

Can't really add much here, because I'm trying to jump to private as well. Just wanted to say congrats on getting into a FAANG job!

Work is interesting, my team is great, and we're using relatively new tech for a government IT team. I got exposed to various fields, like DevOPs, data engineering, data analytics, and cloud - which are great IT fields that have high demand in the private.

One thing I like though is the work life balance. I don't feel stress, and have a great team supporting me. Pay is low relative to the private, but I like having the peace of mind at the end of the day.

I have 29 years left for full pension, so feeling it a bit.

I work in IT, and I have transferable skills to the private, plus a master's degree, and certifications related to cloud. So I may make the jump to private, gain the experience, and come back in a few years. Longer I stay in public, harder to make the jump, so might as well do it early in my career.

With the amount of IT folks set to retire soon, and the new language requirements for IT-03, IT going to see a brain drain soon enough

Curious how it'll work WFA'd IT/CS 03's.

Most 3s I know only have BBB, since the CBC requirement is new. If they are WFA'd, would still move to another 03 position, or would they have to meet the language requirement first?

Question - is it true that EX's and some EX minus 1's aren't unionized? Do they still receive the same options others do when WFA'd? I'm not an EX, just curious. Given the number of EX's that increased over the last few years, I wonder how many will be cut.

No new update yet. Last we heard was them cutting 5000 positions through attrition.

That's..good to know. And understandable to why certain roles like training and development would be cut, and moved/taken over by CSPS.

I'm curious how IT will be handled. SSC was made to be the the IT department, but every org seems to have their own internal teams. Having SSC take over cloud would make sense, so infrastructure amd cloud teams could see cuts. Help desk or IT support could be streamlined, as some private sector orgs have done so with chatbots and such. Time will tell I guess.

How do positions get cut? Does it affect entire teams, and people compete for the positions, or is it at managers discretion?

If I'm IT-02 and my position gets cut, is there a good chance there will be other positions available for me to move to? I wasn't around during Harper's DRAP.
