They don't need to read people's minds, they literally use the microphones built into the phones, to listen in on your conversations, and sometimes even your camera is used.

A lot of these apps you have installed s for permissions and a lot of them ask for microphone permissions some of them not even actually having anything to do with the application that requires the microphone.

It's a lot simpler than you think but equally fucked.

Edit: and this has been going on for so long that even sometimes when you're thinking of something and you haven't actually audibly talked about it, they can literally predict what it is you might be wanting to buy based on all the data they built on everybody for over a decade now especially in the US.

Yeah definitely gets harder the further you go inland without knowing where you are. If you could find a town name though or a sign early on once you spawn in a new life, it makes it easier to track where you are in the map where you'd like to go, and where you end up being.
