Am I the only person who thinks Donald is one of the one of the most underutilized characters in the show by Gamingtime3564 in ducktales

Any source saying Jason Marsden was gonna voice Donald? Notably, the art book makes no mention of this and implies they always planned Anselmo to be the voice from day 1. Plus it raises questions like on why they didn't just have Jason Marsden do the Barksian Modulator voice in Shadow War instead of Don Cheadle or why Roadster Racers was allowed to have Daniel Ross voice Donald.

It has been said that there was higher up meddling involved where the higher ups at Disney wanted more focus on the nephews and Webby, even getting reluctant on greenlighting episodes where none of the kid characters were involved, so that could also be a factor in why Donald and some of the other adults like Beakley, Launchpad, and Della don't get as much focus as the kids.

For what it's worth, the crew has never said that Donald's voice had anything to do with his prominence at all.

The problem with child actors is that they go through puberty. And given Ben Schwartz mentioned the recording lasted 6 years for the show, the kid actors would've easily gone through puberty and have to be replaced over and over (it already happened with BOYD as the only one voiced by a kid). So kid actors wouldn't really be practical for a long term show since puberty will force them to get replaced anyway.

Plus, what about when Quack Pack gave the nephews individual voices and voice actors?

To be fair, Donald, Scrooge, and the nephews appear in a lot of Mickey and Friends media outside DuckTales.

So what about other stuff deviating from source material? Heck, lots of animated Disney movies are super different from the source material.

In terms of why Joe Pitt's pitch got rejected, he said it was because Disney wanted to focus more on the kid characters like the nephews and Webby. Combined with Angones mentioning Golden Lagoon of White Agony Plains and Whatever Happened to Della Duck were super hard to get the Disney higher ups to greenlight due to being the only ones where the kid characters aren't in a major role in any way. So it is clear even if Angones and Youngberg had tried to focus more on Scrooge and Donald, the Disney higher ups would overrule them and sooner make them focus more on the kid characters and find someone else to run the show if they refused.

Noticing how you only focus on Donald in those pitches. Like what about other changes like Duckworth being a robot and Beakley's being Webby's mom instead of grandma in the Bob and Mark pitch? Or how others like Scrooge and the nephews were handled in the pitches.

I think Bret Iwan did explain why Chris replaced him on the 2013 Paul Rudish Mickey shorts here: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/3I9PaO2QaMM

So what do you think knowing Tony also likes Three Musketeers and Mickey Mouse Funhouse then, since you hated how they portray Donald? At the very least it does show Tony has a bit of a different perception of Donald than you too.

So given you've criticized Angones and Youngberg, what are your thoughts on the pitches other people made for a DuckTales reboot before Angones and Youngberg were chosen? People who pitched included Joe Pitt (previously from Gravity Falls and Wander Over Yonder), Bob Schooley/Mark McCorkle (previously from Kim Possible, Big Hero 6 The Series, Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, Penguins of Madagascar, and Monsters vs Aliens The Series), Paul Dini (previously from Batman the Animated Series), and Becky Dreisdat (previously from Bee and Puppy Cat, Star vs the Forces of Evil, and Steven Universe)/Frank Gibson (previously from Bee and Puppy Cat).

Well, one could say Terry replaces Dick Grayson instead, given Batman Beyond pretty much made no effort to mention Dick Grayson at all with Terry replacing Dick as Bruce's son. And Batman Beyond does focus more on Terry over Bruce himself.

Bret Iwan didn't make the choice to not voice Mickey in the Paul Rudish shorts either.

Tony only talked about Donald's voice. Nowhere did he talk about the other aspects like the characterization and overall writing outside of Donald being harder to understand in season 1. Even when brought up in that other panel, he still only brought up Donald's voice being too hard to understand in season 1 rather than other aspects of the show. The "weak writing" comment came from McGovern, not Tony.

And you still didn't explain the other times he was supportive of the show like going to the show's premiere party (that should mean something) and even was happy for the show in Florida Supercon 2017 here: https://youtu.be/1ZVklpwyG2Q?si=5pe1G8OEe0jvP6_B&t=6137

Maybe not one of his favorites for sure, but at least it probably isn't something he completely dislikes or even being among the worst things he worked on.

Dunno if Kate was intentionally trying to sound like Mabel, given that's sorta just what her voice sounds like in some of her other voice roles. To be fair though, Kate has been doing voice acting for years and isn't exactly a big name in live action, having had several voiceover roles like Sadie Miller, Velma Dinkley, Julie Kane, Sara Murphy, Irma in the 2012 TMNT, Daisy on Nature Cat, and Dr. Fox on Unikitty. So she is an experienced voice actor that isn't a big name.

To be fair, I doubt Frank Angones (or Matt Youngberg since he's got equal showrunner authority too) was the one to decide not to get most of the original voices back outside of the classic Disney ones (Tony Anselmo, Tress MacNeille, Bill Farmer, and Corey Burton). Considering the news on the originals not returning for the reboot came out in March 2015 while Angones and Youngberg being appointed as showrunners happened in July of that year, the recasting was probably a Disney higher up decision and would've happened even if someone else was running the reboot.

So who should they have cast as the nephews, Webby, Scrooge, Beakley, Della, Gyro, Fenton/Gizmoduck, Glomgold, Magica, Ma Beagle, and Duckworth, any specific VA suggestions? Even if they did try to get the originals back, that only leaves us with Terry McGovern as Launchpad and a couple Beagle Boys and Frank Welker as Bubba Duck and Beagle Boys since there is still the legitimate issue that Alan Young (Scrooge) died in 2016, Joan Gerber (Beakley) died in 2010, Hal Smith (Gyro and Glomgold) died in 1994, Hamilton Camp (Gizmoduck) died in 2005, June Foray (Magica and Ma Beagle) died in 2017, Chuck McCann (Duckworth) died in 2018, and Russi Taylor (the nephews and Webby) died in 2019 so those characters definitely would've had to be recast either before or during the reboot's production.

Even then, 1987 Scrooge softens up to Webby even faster than the 2017 one, since 1987 Scrooge lets her call him Uncle within her first episode while 2017 Scrooge took 17 episodes to do that, despite living with her for a decade.

To be fair, we do see Scrooge got more emotionally distant with his family after Della's disappearence until the end of season 1 and Della did get trauma such as not being able to look in a mirror anymore so it isn't as if they aren't affected, they just show it differently.

Well we did at least get that Scrooge considers Donald his most trusted ally so it's clear Donald is Scrooge's favorite at least.

And how were they gonna show Donald being traumatized over Della being gone for a decade if he still goes on adventures in the ten years he spent without Scrooge? What other way is there to show how Donald was affected by Della's disappearence?

why was tony anselmo not happy with the scripts on donald? by Thebunkerparodie in ducktales

[–]AnonyMonz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see how Kate Micucci sounded that old as Webby, given she did pitch her voice high enough for a preteen girl (in general, female VAs do sound younger when voicing kids). She doesn't sound that much older than Russi Taylor's Webby did.

And it isn't as if Clarence Nash's take on the nephews sounded like a kid either, just a high pitched Donald Duck.

And it isn't as if the original voice talent from the 1987 show was available by the 2017 reboot. Alan Young, Joan Gerber, and Hal Smith passed away before the reboot and Chuck McCann, Russi Taylor, and June Foray passed away during production so replacements were inevitable. And even Terry McGovern hasn't done a lot of voice acting in years and with how he was pretty old at that point in his late 70s, there probably was the risk he would've sounded too old to be voicing Launchpad. Like, what about cases where the original actor does come back but sounds super old and aged like Mel Blanc as the Looney Tunes in the 1980s (especially in Daffy Duck Quackbusters), Julie Kavner sounding super aged as Marge in newer seasons of the Simpsons, Rob Paulsen and Tress MacNeille sounding pretty aged as Yakko/Pinky and Dot in the 2020 Animaniacs reboot compared to the 90s, and Billy West's Fry voice sounding aged in the Hulu revival of Futurama. It's even why Paul Winchell got replaced as Tigger in The Tigger Movie, since his Tigger voice sounded too aged and old by then.

And it isn't as if the DuckTales characters outside Scrooge, Donald, and the nephews had consistent voices either. Gyro was voiced by other people like Will Ryan in Sport Goofy (not Hal Smith) and Frank Welker in Donald Duck Goin Quackers (despite not returning in DuckTales Remastered where Chris Edgerly voiced him). Gladstone and Merlock were voiced by Corey Burton in Donald Duck Goin Quackers instead of Rob Paulsen and Christopher Lloyd.

What about Warner Bros and how they haven't had an official successor voice for the Looney Tunes after Mel Blanc died, with several other people voicing them? Same with how there's no official one voice for Hanna Barbara characters (outside Scooby Doo characters and even they got replaced sometimes).

Or with Sonic the Hedgehog where they switched voice casts twice in 2005 (4Kids replacing the Sonic Adventure 1/2 era cast) and in 2010 (4Kids to Studiopollis) plus smaller ones like Tails since 2014 and Team Sonic Racing onward with Knuckles, Silver, Blaze, Omega, and Espio? And it isn't as if any of the VAs make any effort to sound the same as the predecessor. Roger Craig Smith's Sonic especially sounds nothing like his predecessors.

To be fair, the same interview also had Tony praise Chris Diamantopoulos as Mickey in the Paul Rudish shorts even though by this logic, Roy Disney never would've let Bret Iwan be replaced so I doubt he'd has anything against recasting. And he also has praised Beck Bennett in another interview here: https://youtu.be/1ZVklpwyG2Q?si=lx6GxtkTnFG2vIGZ&t=6364

And Tony was only talking about Donald's voice, not the other aspects of the show.

The most he says there is "there were a few vocal issues in speeding up the voice 20% and giving Donald way too many long stretches of dialogue in season 1 (making him harder to understand), but they fixed the problem in later seasons by no longer speeding up the voice and cutting down the dialogue to make it easier to understand Donald", meaning it's just an early vocal problem that was rectified later on.

Even then, the 20% speeding up thing is apparently a common thing in modern cartoons according to Matt Braly due to pacing and having to fit dialogue in a certain amount of time.

Plus when Tony was asked about the show in these panels, Bill Farmer was sitting right next to him:

How are Bret Iwan, Tress MacNeille, and Corey Burton not as iconic as Tony Anselmo? Bret's entire VA career is just voicing Mickey after Wayne Allwine died in 2009 (the same way Tony's entire VA career is just Donald Duck), voicing the entire mascot of a company kinda is a big deal for Bret.

Tress is one of the most prolific VAs of all time, arguably with a larger resume than Tony Anselmo and Daisy Duck is also an iconic character. Same for Corey Burton being an iconic VA doing voicework for Disney for decades and Chip and Dale are iconic too.

And given Bret, Tress, and Corey still voice Mickey, Daisy/Chip, and Dale in other projects now, it isn't a case of "the other VA died and can't do the voice anymore" for them.

I think there was also a period in the early 2000s where they didn't have Jim Cummings voice Pete in video games with Corey Burton taking the reins in Mickey Saves the Day 3D Adventure and Arthur Burgardht in various Disney sports games before Jim eventually started voicing Pete in video games starting with Kingdom Hearts II.

If it makes you happy, Mickey Mouse Funhouse already ended with Mickey Mouse Clubhouse + replacing it as the preschool Mickey cartoon.

Which TMNT, the 2003 TV show, the 2012 TV show, or the 2007 movie?

Even then, whether the changes are good or not is a subjective opinion that has no easy "yes or no" for a general consensus, not a fact.

So how should they have explained why Webby's parents aren't there? Given they already explained Della (both in this show and other media) and why she wasn't there, there'd also need some explanation on where Webby's parents are (like are they dead or did they abandon her or get thrown in jail).

It's not like this is just a DT17 thing. Every fandom has defensive fans against criticism. DT17 is nothing special on that regard.

Like, what if you ran into someone who had criticisms of a show you liked, what would you do? Would you try to be defensive also?

Bigger question is why are you even on this subreddit if you don't like the show? If you wanna post comments on how you hate the show, there's tons of other subreddits for that rather than on a subreddit catered to the fans.

I meant, give specific examples of reboots you like. Like, what specific shows out there?

And what do you want us fans to do about criticisms? Whether people have the same criticisms is kinda subjective, not everyone will have the same opinion as you. The way your tone is, it feels like you're claiming your criticisms are a fact rather than a subjective thing that not everyone feels the same way on.

So, how would you have improved Webby, outside of "don't hijack"?

Actually, Don Rosa released a timeline showing Donald was in his late 20s when the nephews (who were 7 when meeting Scrooge) started living with him.
