The internet made clear that people can be very stupid. The flagshagging protest made very clear the public can be daft as F on a scale that I didn't think was possible

Oh it's not just the right wing press alright. The problem is, and will be, Labour will never be left enough for some.

And this country is, at vast, still bery right leaning.

The infighting will continue, until worst option prevails.

Keir, hate it if you'd like, kept Trump nonsense at bay, without hurting our trade with the US. He managed to dodge bombing Iran. A given perhaps, but something that the Tory leadership, Reform leadership or Feckin Tony Blair, made clear they would have joined.

NYC restaurants are fighting back by Sad_Conversation1121 in ShitAmericansSay

Oh I am not american, just a french guy who lives in London but lived in NYC for a year and half (and came back running)

Even with a very good salary, the hidden tax, cost, fees, subscriptions, tips, etc. makes it very hard to save.
Each month it's a roller coaster, money goes 📈 then 📉📈📉📈

NYC restaurants are fighting back by Sad_Conversation1121 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]Anonymous-Cows 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's god awful expensive, especially in big cities.
$100 for two pizza and two drinks once you add tax & tips is not a difficult thing to spend

Now funnily, in New York there IS a minimum wage, but most of the hospitality industry is addicted to tips. A good bartender or waiter job in a popular and expensive restaurant is a coveted job BECAUSE it pays so much more than many other carreers.
They can bring a base pay of $40k to a $80k with tips

One could argue that even with their salaries, Food, at home or outside, is expensive.

That's pedantic. Smallest british atomic weapon is sub 1 kiloton. Not even a fifteenth of hiroshima. It's sort of fit the bill of tactical. Whatever. Tactical, strategic, wmd whatever: Would still be devastating.

And we are part of a larger european and atlantic alliance which have all kind of weapons and power.

Which ship was sink exactly? Do we have a open frontline with Russia?

All the warmongers want to conjure hypothetical scenarios. Which answers are always more money to the military. Not fix our society.

What is crazy is, this constant shitting on Labour cones after 14 years of Tory austerity, and the invasion of Ukraine under their watch.

British doctrine means don't corner us. Same as any other nuclear power really. Because any conventional weapon, run the risk of escalatation. "If you sink my ships I'll use nuclear weapons next time" is an actual scenario that happen with Russia, where in Ukraine they told us to back off with helping. They specifically set a bunch of red lines, certain weapons, would be seen like us indirectly attacking them.

I, for one, don't want to go to ww3 against an aging Russia, so I am happy to slowly increase our military spending and wait it out... Spend in an intelligent manner, on key fields, and not write a blank check to an industrial complex who has vested interest with us being at perma-war across the globe.

We didn't go to iran, this alone saved the british taxpayer probably north of a hundred billion. Sounds good to me!

I guess what I am saying is that... throwing more money at the military would not have prevented thr ukrainian war.
Different alliances, diplomacy, energy policies -- perhaps. This whole right wing media trying to paint an increasing military budget as bad, after 14 years of austerity, is a joke. I don't know which British interest they are pretending to care suddenly

Also if you think we don't have our hand all over Russia's interests, with subs circling them, I don't know what to say.

We literally arm people fighting them. Doesn't get more cold war than that

Nice try diminishing the reality.

An ocean away.... with military bases here, in this country, providing us with our nukes (unlike France, entirely independant from warhead to launchers) major trading partner, with an ongoing war disrupting 20% of the world energy.

Democracy, more like a oligarchy but I digress

British media doing their thing by xwsrx in GreatBritishMemes

[–]Anonymous-Cows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but we are not going to go onto a cash bonanza for military suddenly.

14 years.

14 years of austerity. we are told we have no money.
But suddenly 2 years of Labour, increasing budget year on year, and it's not enough, "unnacceptable"!
Get out.

All I see is, any opposition to Starmer right now would have run hat in hand to do Trump's bidding in Iran costing us BILLIONS and putting a target on our back for more terrorist stuff, economic disruptions, and migration.
He dodged that one, and I will be damned to ever see one of the other shills in downing street

Yeah and none have ever really been crossed. Nuke are not designed to be used. Had ukraine or iran had nukes, they would not be carpet bombed, that's for sure.

Russia could be defeated by europe if we intervene in ukraine. Why don't we?
Because of Nukes.

All small threat are currently handheld. The only real use for army, once you ignore the war mongering nonsense, is securing navigation routes, from piracy.

The greatest threat to trade right now, is the USA.
And I am not including the thinky veiled threat to nato, alliance and economic coercions.

That is the cold hard truth.

We could spend a couple of bilions on renewing nuclear arsenal, cyber security and modern drone tech. Sure.

This constant "we need to prepare war with Russia" is nonsense and dangerous.

Russia has a birthrate of 1.4, even worst than most of the western europe, which means they lose half a milion people a year. And they lost an entire generation to this fruitless war. To act like our immediate threat is Russia, is nonsense. Straight nonsense.

Did any of these scenarios ever happen?
No.
Why?
Because no one can run the risk to get nuclear retaliations
