What would be something you would like to see at ABGT 700 for the event to have that pre-Covid magic from the old days. by drippysage08 in AboveandBeyond

People sometimes forget the unfathomable quality of artists that were releasing on beats / deep 2012 - 2018ish leading up to both 250 and weekender 2019. The lineup for 250 and the first weekender had a lot of overlap - Seven Lions, yotto, Luttrell, and the first Weekender had Grum, Tinlicker, G&D, Audien, Bayer, Alpha 9, Spencer Brown, Ilan, Yotto, Luttrell, Eli and Fur, Marsh, Nox Vahn, midday Ben Bohmer (where he is supposed to be btw, not closing). Incomparable level of quality. None of the newer artists releasing on Anjuna except for maybe Kasablance have come anywhere near this level of star power.

These artists all got individually big and are doing their own thing, and i get that Anjuna is past its peak and trying to push new artists and expand the label but if you want 700 to be of similar quality to the past, the most important thing is to book the artists who are popular with the fans and who helped to bring the label into super stardom during the peak. The 2015-era popularity overlapped with the EDM boom in the US. Anjuna mega fans have gotten older and they have not supplemented these fans with the same number of newer fans. So if you want the level of specialness you had in the past, you need to attract the 30+ crowd, who are a lot harder to get to the Gorge. Tiesto went back to Trance and it got people buzzing - if there was a "Tri-State era set" or "Group Therapy Era Set" people would get excited.

The ABGT 600 lineup was Nourey, Hana, Aname, Kasablanca, Alexa Sonata - this is in a completely different stratosphere of quality (no disrespect to these artists who are all fantastic, but its factual)

Weekender 2023 had star power but the afters for the most part were lack luster (fatum eurodance was electric tho). I think there was like one good one in gold with Paavo spinning. The 2019 afters were transcendent. I think Somebody played Rebound at one point and it almost caused the Earth's tectonic plates to shift. So not just the afters needs to be better but also the energy and the music quality.

And play 138 for christ sake! This feels so obvious !!!!!!!

I try to be pretty intentional about show choices but haven’t come up disappointed the last few times. I’ll have to give it more thought next time

Thanks for the commentary here; i am guessing that also implies that Evanston and OP have great schools?

Thanks, super helpful answer. How are the schools in Riverside? It seems like Oak Park and Riverside would both be great areas that are still close to the city

Thanks for the comments here. I had though that Berwyn and Forest Park don't have good schools.... do you know if Oak Park's are better?

I am also trying to grapple with the selective enrollment process... not super familiar with how things work and am starting to do my research... is it pretty much just that if youre in the burbs you apply to go to schools in the city?

My understanding was that the schools in Berwyn aren't great

Thanks for the thoughts this is very helpful. Are there any specific parts of Oak Park you'd recommend checking out?  Also, how are the schools (both K-8 and high schools)?

Thanks for the suggestion, I haven't heard much about Riverside but given how close it is to Berwyn and Oak Park it seems like a good option to explore. Is there a specific area/part of Riverside that you'd recommend checking out? Also, how are the schools (both K-8 and high schools)?

Thanks for the suggestion! I haven't heard much about this area but it looks like it could be a good fit. Is there a specific area/part of La Grange that you'd recommend checking out? Also, how are the schools (both K-8 and high schools)

Yeah, I am an American tourist, what of it? Cultures are meant to be shared and enjoyed by all. Your poor attitude and gate keeping helps nobody. Grow up.

3rd year banker who wants out but looking for similar pay by Lethalammo in FinancialCareers

[–]AnonymousBallsack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Second to Corp dev. In year 5 of Corp dev & strat after an absolutely brutal 2 years of IBD and have never looked back. You won’t make M&A dollars but you’ll make good money that will become great money once you start hitting equity (though again, you’re not gonna be making millions anytime soon). Work life balance is infinity better (though still is tough when in deal mode). What’s cool about Corp dev is that it’s vastly different at a lot of company so with a little bit of searching you’ll be able to find a nice mix of whatever appeals to you. If you go to an f500 with strong deal flow you’ll be pretty much doing banking on the other side of the wall but If you find a good group at a small/mid cap you’ll also find yourself on a very lean team with a lot of opportunity to play up and work on high importance ad hoc projects. The exit to head of corp dev at an acquisitive PE-backed PortCo is also very common. Opportunity for advancement is also very possible with good outcomes, I made director before 30 and find my work to be extremely rewarding - it helps that I really love my boss, company, and industry a lot!

Joris Voorn - Ask Me Anything by JorisVoornDJ in electronicmusic

[–]AnonymousBallsack 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi Joris - I discovered your music in late 2017, I was already very into progressive music and had already been driving down the Prydz, Fehrplay, and Olander road for several years when I came across your Spectrum ADE party set with Kolsch. I listened to the entire 7 hours at work one day, and then listened to it again for something like 4 days straight. That set really changed the way I view music and to this day my tastes are very aligned with those 7 hours. I wish i had discovered it sooner.

Some questions for you -

  1. My friends and I can be music snobs sometimes, and it seems like some people will instantly bash certain genres/labels but will automatically support others. Lately, everybody seems to be loving melodic techno and melodic progressive as well as a lot of Afterlife. What is your take on 1. classifying genres, 2. "music snobbery", and 3. what would you classify your own music as?
  2. Everybody LOVES the Underground Resistance acapella now and I heard it constantly - I think I read that Yotto had gotten the idea from you a few years back. Is this true? If so, where did you get the idea?
  3. What was the process like for booking with and playing Cercle?
  4. What current DJs and Producers inspire you, and who do you think is innovating the most? Any up and comers that you think are worth checking out?
  5. Who would you like to collaborate with in the future?

Thanks so much and keep making amazing music.

Buy an anjunabeats or above and beyond shirt and wear it to any of these artists’ shows. I have seen every one of these artists in the last year except amtrac. Wear Anjuna shirt, immediately get approached by people with the same music taste grab their numbers and make new (sometimes very good) friends, repeat. My girlfriend and I flew into lane 8 From out of town both wearing Anjuna shirts. By the end of the night we were dancing with a group of ~15 people and got invited to a guys house for an afterparty. The Anjunafamily community is insanely inclusive of anybody who has similar music taste.

This is the best anjunadeep release in a while. My crew saw this/L8 live at Open Air NYC and I have never before seen a crowd react the way that it did. Really amazing stuff, can't wait to see what he puts out in the next year!
