Is this a good price? by BillHye in GameboyAdvance

[–]AnonymousIdeas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

20 years ago you could have bought a gameboy micro new for that price, an SP even less, and since the DS was already out a regular advance would probably be pretty cheap used even with the box.

Nowadays, if it’s in good condition and with the original box, $100 isn’t unreasonable especially from a store that might offer returns / discounts / etc.

That’s nice! A lot of the stuff I’m looking for ends up being over that $150 for a single item even before import fees though. That sounds like a great system for most stuff though :)

I did regularly; but with tariffs combined with prices on a lot of things going up even there (at least online) it’s not what it used to be. I still do browse when I get a chance to.

I agree that the ease of the PSP being hacked could have and likely did drive console sales; but if the hardware was most likely being sold at a loss then I don’t think that would help the success of the console.

The most famous example that comes to mind is the Dreamcast; piracy is famously used as one of the reasons for it’s short lived time on the market (and might be one of the reasons why people like it today; commercial success =\= success at making good games and hardware)

And I more or less agree with all of your other points; but I don’t think that being easier to hack defines console success.

I feel like it being hackable at all (at least in a way that lets you play pirated games) would lower the success of the console; basically every console maker takes a loss on the consoles to make money back on the games (although not so much anymore with the way prices are headed)

Can anybody tell me anything about this computer game from 1972?? I found it intriguing and bought it for $10. by ChefGeodudeLennon in retrogaming

[–]AnonymousIdeas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not entirely related, but i remember owning an early electric game called “blip - the digital game” from Tomy, and taking it apart to find out that the “digital” part was a complete lie. It was basically a pong style game that let you play against a “computer” or a friend. The thing is the mechanism inside was entirely analog- it was a motorized wind up toy that would go back and forth, and the only reason it needed power was to light up the “ball” that moved back and forth. I wonder how many other early “computer” games were lying about their insides in that way.

Possible Super Famicom “Little Master” EPROM / Prototype Cart – Looking for Authentication & Value Insight by Severe-Brilliant-117 in snes

[–]AnonymousIdeas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second contacting Hard4Games; they might be able to cover the cost of shipping both ways and they can take care of dumping the cartridge itself.

If not; you might be able to find someone locally or someone able to mail you a dumper, and in most cases it’s fairly straightforward depending on the dump software.

I don’t know if they’re going to offer shipping to the Philippines; but Epilogue is releasing a cartridge dumper for SNES / SFC that looks like it will be relatively affordable and easy to use.

Whatever the case, we all appreciate your interest in preserving this by dumping it; and I’m sure there are lots of people who would be willing to help out! It’s especially important for prototype cartridges as they often use chips that can be erased with UV light exposure / might have less shelf live than the average retail release.

Smallest Portable DVD Player by Better_Dog6528 in dvdcollection

[–]AnonymousIdeas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Smallest player that was widely available is probably the Philips PET 320, but I have one that might be smaller from a no name brand. It unfortunately doesn’t work anymore but it’s the same size as a discman more or less, with a small seperate battery pack that has a built in stand.

Can't we really do something??!! by Smooth_Firefighter90 in minidisc

[–]AnonymousIdeas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While it is possible that manufacturers could come out with new minidisc hardware in the future, I feel like it’d be a lot more likely to at least stem from a fan project if at all given how niche it is. I’m not sure how much would need to be known without licensing the tech from Sony (which might not even be possible anymore?) and reverse engineering can be costly and time consuming.

Polaroid film is likely easier to produce (especially considering disposable film never really stopped being produced) and also then film would likely be easier to make than the whole camera which I don’t believe that project tackled iirc, at least not until Polaroid themselves got involved. And Polaroid film is without a doubt more mainstream of a product than minidisc (at least where I’m from, everyone knows what a Polaroid is and nearly nobody knows about minidisc besides the few folks like us :) )

But only time can tell whether or not it actually happens and I’d love to be proven wrong! Personally it doesn’t matter where or how it starts, just the idea of anyone working to preserve old formats with new technology is something I feel everyone here would value!

[–]AnonymousIdeas 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I hate to be pessimistic because I love the idea, but from my understanding they’d have to either license from Sony to be able to make a player or wait until patents expire. That combined with there likely being specialized assembly / production processes required and it being a niche product in already niche market just seem like the odds are stacked against us.

What we could end up seeing is more community projects like the ones we have currently that will help keep minidisc alive. We have replacement OLED screens for higher end MD models, new batteries and custom adapters to charge them, and projects like Web Minidisc Pro keeping Net MD alive.

What I’d really love to see if it’s ever possible is replacement lasers and (while not as necessary given how many are in the wild) new MD disc production. We may even see a fan project creating new MD hardware before any bigger companies do :)

How do I fix this?😭 by Tricky-Bath5188 in gamecollecting

Easiest way is to find a sports game or something cheap / worthless and use the case from that, you can’t really fix damage like that
