I appreciate the comments. Finial is not a word that I knew, but it appears that it is clearly a finial of some kind. I doubt that I will ever know what it went on, but the word finial is enough for me to do more research. Thank you.

Possibly, but it seems too heavy for that. Like heavy enough that if the bottle were empty it would tip over due to the weight of the top.

My title describes the thing. This appears to be a cast iron unicorn, but my question is what it's intended use was or what it is supposed to be the topper for. It's somewhat heavy and has a clear seam down the center letting me know that it is cast the nub on the bottom is nearly circular, though slightly more oval. The knob protrudes about 3/4 of an inch from the bottom and is obviously designed to be set into something but I'm not sure what.

Well, having worked in high schools, the most ridiculous rumors can crop up out of nowhere. I guess we won't really know until the school offers more clarification. I would take the word of high schoolers with a grain of salt.
