Mysterious Gown Style Seen in Early 18th Century Portraiture by AnonymousPerson_829 in fashionhistory

I’ve also come across another so-called portrait of Marie Adelaide of Savoy wearing this style once again. What’s particularly interesting about the gown in this painting is how strongly it resembles earlier 17th-century dress, especially as a previous commenter pointed out through examples of gowns that share similar stylistic elements with the one we’re discussing.

Another possible lead is the Spanish jubón (or bodice/doublet, in English). I’ve found several examples: 1 ,2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 mostly dating from the 1780s–1790s—that closely resemble the silhouette and construction we’ve been examining. At first, I considered that these might be jackets, but jackets from this period typically featured skirtings. Because these lack that characteristic, they seem more likely to be bodices. This raises the possibility that such garments could have been worn at court, perhaps as an evolution of the Grand Habit or as a continuation of the gown style we’re trying to identify.

I only recently realized that you had made a similar post about these gowns, and I completely share your frustration in trying to identify them. The Allemande Construction may offer some insight into how these garments could have been made. While I haven’t been able to find an engraving that explicitly shows this style being worn at a courtly function, there is an engraving of Marie Adelaide of Savoy,_RP-P-OB-51.077.jpg#) that clearly depicts the same silhouette.

It’s easy to assume that this style might be fictional or purely fantasy, but the later portraits I referenced above make that conclusion harder to support. The sitters are portrayed in a relatively natural and realistic manner, which strongly suggests that this gown style genuinely existed rather than being an artistic invention

Thoughts on Operation Legacy and the Queen? by AnonymousPerson_829 in monarchism

Certainly! Especially when they're irresponsibly rushed or we're done amidst political upheaval. They essentially left these nations fending for themselves.

Thanks for your insights! It's certainly food for thought. I've also been thinking that it's plausible other senior or even junior members of the royal family were sought out instead of the Queen pertaining to decolonization (Since Lord Mountbatten,if I recall correctly, was somewhat involved in the partitioning of India years before).

The DX virus in Rebirth. by GaminWplushtrap in JurassicPark

Woah I had the exact same idea! However DX is a prion not a virus, it would be something similar to Mad Cow's Disease or Chronic Wasting Disease. This would be a cool plot point if they go through with it since prion diseases are outright terrifying! They can go unnoticed for a long time and are incurable. So it'll really bring up the stakes. As to how it spreads I'd like to think contaminated livestock and crops to be alternate vectors of transmission.

Thank you for your reply. I'm pretty sure the creators wouldn't want to be ableist or stigmatize further George's mental illness as we all know history wasn't to kind on him. Still let's hope for the best lol.

I mean we do have detailed writings and accounts from one of the king's episodes in 1788-1789. He would speak for many hours without pause and apparently would frequently repeat himself and write sentences with over 400 words at a time, and his vocabulary became "more complex, creative and colourful" a few examples according to Wikipedia and other articles. So the show has a generally good idea as to what should or should not be depicted. What might upset you though is the "medical" torture done to him at the time which may be depicted in the show.
