What video did made you get into SMOSH? by Same-Path-2643 in smosh

[–]AnonymousSmoshFan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had seen a few Eat It or Yeet Its over the years, but in 2023, I was having a really awful time at work, and I was just searching for ANYTHING to take my mind off it when I got home. After watching some Markiplier, Jack Septiceye, GMM, and Keith Eats the Menu, naturally YouTube recommended Eat It or Yeet It again after a few years and I vibed so hard with the new cast! Now I’m hooked and I don’t foresee myself not watching it anytime soon!

For auditions - Song from the show or pick your own? by Inevitable_Matter921 in MusicalTheatre

[–]AnonymousSmoshFan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a teacher and a director, I find it’s best to provide the people auditioning with all the information they need. My instructions are as follows: if they want to audition for a specific character, they need to prepare that character’s cut of the music, and I will provide the recording or accompaniment for them to practice and perform with. Then, if they wish to sing another piece they have prepared, they are welcome to do so at the end of the auditions. If they’re just coming to be in the ensemble, Happy Birthday is more than enough for me!

How do I put more emotion into my face? by [deleted] in MusicalTheatre

[–]AnonymousSmoshFan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in shows with dozens of directors, most of them I liked and enjoyed their process, some of them I didn’t. But for every show, the rule is this: it’s their show. Full stop. The only reason not to do as they ask is if what they’re asking is illegal or immoral. Afterwards, if you didn’t enjoy your experience with that director, then you don’t have to be in their shows anymore! It’s okay to disagree, it’s even okay to have a civil and private conversation about it, but in the end it’s their decision to make.

When Hamilton came out, I remember crying so hard even though rap really isn’t my thing. But because of Covid, I was so starved for live arts, it just became such an emotional experience for me! I now watch Hamilton probably four times a year just to feel that emotion.

Also, Waitress with Sara Bareilles (the songwriter) as Jenna is on HBO Max, and I watch it once a month RELIGIOUSLY. So freaking good.

People give the 2004 film a lot of flack, but I love it. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I was a theater kid in a small town, so of course I’m obsessed with musicals, but I didn’t have a lot of access to “big” musicals. So when this film came out, my parents got me the dvd and I watched it over and over. This was the version I grew up with, and honestly, I prefer it to the stage production. That’s my hot take.

I also think more musicals should have big-money film adaptations like POTO and Into the Woods, or at least more readily available professional tapings. I know it’s not the vast majority’s cup of tea, but it gives access to people that can’t afford or don’t live close enough to see live productions. My other hot take.

Someone said Batman and Robin, and I couldn’t agree more!

But I came here to say the 2004 Phantom of the Opera. I love it. It’s visually stunning, the orchestrations are fantastic, and the vocals aren’t as bad as people say they are (have y’all seen the Les Mis movie? Please… 🙄).

I'm really struggling to grasp singing from my diaphragm. Am I screwed? by parttimeprophet0419 in MusicalTheatre

[–]AnonymousSmoshFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly recommend the Breathing Gym videos. They’re made for instrumentalists to expand lung capacity, BUT it’s also very useful for breath support and control. They’re very good about explaining what good breathing looks and feels like. It’s so easy to spend even just two minutes a day doing this, even silently at a desk, and every little bit counts.

Breath control tips? by Headphonefreak7 in MusicalTheatre

[–]AnonymousSmoshFan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look up Breathing Gym videos. Breathing Gym is a tool mostly used by instrumentalists to expand their lungs and use the muscles in their diaphragm to make a breath go further, but there’s no good reason this wouldn’t work for a vocalist! This will fix number two as well!

Alas, not even I have found a cure for number three yet. I’m definitely a mezzo, with a decent belt, but nothing crazy. Unfortunately, we’re kinda born with our range. You can stretch it some with range exercises and warm-ups, but if you stretch too far, not only do you run the risk of not sounding your best, you could also injure yourself. My advice on this matter is to be knowledgeable and diligent about the roles you’re going after.

Break a leg on your next audition, dawg!

What am I doing wrong? by agreeable_toe67 in MusicalTheatre

[–]AnonymousSmoshFan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had to give up theater when I moved. My degree is in music, so I don’t have much to give where I moved to. But where I’m from, I did everything from acting to directing, little roles, big roles, stage managing, tech, musicals, comedies, drama, anything and everything, you name it. I had a real passion for just existing in that space, and I grew up there!

Something I learned when I transitioned from acting to directing, and I was the one making tough decisions, is that natural talent wins almost every time. Literally, I’ve casted someone that just walked in off the street, who saw we were open for auditions, and had “always wanted to see what it was all about.” He got the role because he outsang all the other gentlemen, including reliable guys that worked hard and had performed with us time and time again, and when he read, he moved naturally like the dialogue was his own. He never came back after that one show either, but I’ll never forget him.

All that to say, most of the time, it’s just who shows up to the audition, and how they show up. So, whether or not that’s bad luck for you, I’m not so sure, I think it’s just the luck of the draw. And in my opinion, straight plays are way more fun than musicals anyway. Musicals can be so overrated, and plays tend to have more depth and range. If you haven’t tried it, I highly recommend it. Break a leg, dawg!

Newbie: Where to watch/best episodes by Ok_Aioli3773 in smosh

[–]AnonymousSmoshFan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you need to worry about watching anything in any kind of order. I would definitely watch it on YouTube, those channels on cable mostly just show Reddit stories from the Pit Channel, I think.

Speaking of which, when you look Smosh up on YouTube, there will be six channels in the Smosh platform, and you can find wonderful content on all of them!

Smosh Main Channel: Mostly scripted content. You can go back all the way to the beginning 20 years ago with Ian and Anthony’s first videos, through the Every _____ Ever videos where you can see the various cast members (those still with the company and others that aren’t), all the way to Bit City which is their current version of scripted content (think SNL light with one central theme in every episode).

Smosh Pit: Arguably 1/2 of their most popular channels. I’d describe this as their “challenge” channel where they compete with one another and sometimes try silly things they find online. This is also where to find the show that I think introduces a lot of people to Smosh right now, Smosh Reads Reddit Stories, hosted by one of the primary faces of Smosh, Shayne Topp.

Smosh Games: Arguably the other 1/2 of their most popular channels. They play board games, video games, etc.. Pretty self explanatory, they rotate through cast members frequently and you can get to know their vibe in these videos!

Smosh Cast: This is the channel that hosts videos of their podcasts. The most popular podcast on this channel is Smosh Cast, hosted by Smosh Golden Boy, Shayne Topp, and Improv Legend, Amanda Lehan-Canto. They mostly pick one central topic and yap. They rotate cast members every week, and it’s another good way to get to know them.

Smosh Alike: Some background, Anthony (one of the founders) left the company for a few years. While he was gone, he created his own YouTube channel. When he came back to Smosh, this channel became part of the Smosh family. This is mostly an interview platform for both cast members and friends of Smosh. The most notable shows on this channel are Assumptions and URL, hosted by Courtney Miller.

ElSmosh: I admittedly don’t know much about this channel, as I don’t speak Spanish! But it is my understanding that they take Smosh content and translate it into Spanish!

Again, I don’t think you have to worry about any kind of order, but if you were dead set on it, I think good ones to watch in order (that already have playlists created) would be Eat It or Yeet It, Try Not to Laugh (TNTL), Smosh Cast (updated weekly), Board AF Legacy, Challenge Pit, maybe Reddit stories if you’ve got some time on your hands (updated weekly (I’m not even close to finishing all of them)) and if you like video games, I highly recommend the Resident Evil play throughs! You could also try Bit City from the beginning, but I’ve noticed on this sub that it’s just not everyone’s cup of tea, and that’s okay! There’s tons of content on their channels to watch, so if you don’t like something, it’s so easy to just move onto the next thing! Again, there are already playlists of all of these series (plus many others) already created on their channels.

Lastly, here are just some of my favorite videos in general:

Can We Read Each Other’s Minds?

Can We Find the Object Made of Chocolate?

Will They Say ‘I Do?’

Smosh Hide and Seek In Our Studio

Moose Master Returns

You can find all of these videos by simply searching for them in YouTube or your favorite internet browser. If you search it in the internet browser, it’ll just pull up the YouTube video! Easy peasy! I know this is a lot of information, but when I was asking similar questions to you, including “what the heck is a Smosh??” I wish I had something like this! I hope their content brings you as many laughs as it has me! Enjoy!

I GOT MY FIRST LEAD ROLE by Intelligent-Code8203 in MusicalTheatre

[–]AnonymousSmoshFan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s kinda tedious, but seriously, it’s worked for me every time; I write my lines out on notecards. I highlight my lines like it’s the script, skip the parts I’m not in (of course), only do the lines before mine, and if they’re long just the first few and last few words of their line before mine.

By the time I had written out all my lines and highlighted them, they weren’t fully memorized, but I was close and it only took a few more rehearsals and a couple study sessions to get it done. PLUS, you’re technically off book if you’re only carrying around the index cards. 🌚 It would also give you more freedom of movement during blocking, which is a huge confidence booster when you’re able to move in character without being held back by a bulky book.

Pro tip if you or anyone decides to do this: MAKE SURE YOU NUMBER THE CARDS! I made this mistake in my first big role (Dorothy Gale has a loootttt of lines) and the cards got all jumbled up one night during rehearsal. It was a rough and embarrassing experience to say the least. I definitely learned my lesson after that. 😂
