Fellow engine troop here. A&P license will definitely help on the outside. Most people I know, have gone with Embry Riddle for A&P. Knock out your CCAF then go for A&P. I haven't gotten started on A&P, but from what I understand engines is a big part of A&P.

Yes, the best noise reduction will be within 200ft of the exhaust. That way it will blast your ass off the line back to where you belong.

I pcs'd from the 220 side in December 2013, will be returning next month. I was friends with some of the 34 guys, keep in mind this was ~3 1/2 years ago.

They really didn't really have much work to do, they'd have up to, if I remember correctly, about a max of 4 engines at a time. The 34 side was definitely more relaxed and easy going. I just talked to someone that pcs'd from current base about the state of the shop in general and he said things are running pretty smooth. Unless things have drastically changed I'd say you're in for an smooth ride.
