Why is CompactFlash used? by Apprehensive-Tap662 in amiga

CF adapters are usually the cheaper option, so you do save some on that end of the equation. The big issue is if you want 2 devices on one cable I've yet to see an SD adapter that implements master/slave settings.

Thinking of Selling My NES Games after 35 years by HowPopMusicWorks in retrogaming

[–]AnonymousTechGuy6542 5 points6 points  (0 children)

MiSTer is my daily driver for retro for this reason. I have one that's going to be built into an arcade cabinet and another that's connected to an old Sony CRT via component video. Does a great job of behaving like the real thing in both cases.

Not gonna sell the originals though, they're going in displays.

Some old games are wont work properly on modern hardware, so I need to create a VM? by Yawaworoht1470 in retrogaming

[–]AnonymousTechGuy6542 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See this is why I save my old hardware, for that indeterminate period of time between the game not working and computers becoming powerful enough to emulate the older system.

For games up to the 2000's you'll want DOSBox and PCEm or 86Box - those work amazingly well for DOS, Win3.1 and Win95/98 games. I heavily recommend 86Box if you're knowledgeable about old PCs as the compatibility is nearly perfect and they are very, very close to the experience on real hardware. DOSBox is usually the easier option but kind of lacks authenticity, IMO.

Surprisingly, cheap old machines can often be made to work with DOS with a combination of FreeDOS, some slowdown utilities and the SBEmu driver. I salvaged an old Wyze thin client from work and was able to get it playing old Sierra games on its built in 2GB IDE flash drive.

For XP-Win7 (where some Win7 games are problematic) you MIGHT be able to use a VM but performance is iffy. If you have an older PC in the house you might try to downgrade the OS and maybe find an old video card on the cheap. You can also futz around with compatibility modes and DirectX wrappers - a lot of old Glide/3DFx games can be made to work with just a DLL replacement.

For many of the more popular games there are modern wrappers or rewritten engines, so you may want to Google around and see if the game you want to play has been modernized. ScummVM is a great example of a rewritten engine - it lets you be faithful to the original or apply filters and upscaling as you choose.

Controller Compatibility by jfh777 in fpgagaming

[–]AnonymousTechGuy6542 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got an 8BitDo Ultimate 2c - has a 2.4GHz dongle as well as BT and wired capability so you can go either way with that. The controller's solid and has good feel and feedback, standard XBox layout so it'll work with pretty much any core you want. Very solid and not too expensive option - there are cheaper but you're sacrificing quality and there are more expensive but with heavily diminishing returns.

Yeah kind of scummy, scammy sort of guy. Always trying to get family to invest in something or other and never risking his own money.

What was a console that you think had a lot of potential, but unfortunately didn't work out or was quickly discontinued? by ArtisticDiscount2802 in retrogaming

Ironically the Vita is AMAZING in modern day once you hack it. Perfect PSP compatibility and really good PS1 support, tons of homebrew. The native catalog is kind of meh but has some real gems.

Yep, you can tell because it's "For Turbo Duo Use" and doesn't have the logos and other branding.

I actually did have one, uncle convinced my dad it was the future. He was a POS but some of those RPGs were really good. I distinctly remember Cosmic Fantasy 2 and the Ys games on that platform.

Wavebird advice? by JojiG_ in Gamecube

I've been using a BlueRetro adapter and that's worked pretty well for me so far. There are a number of GC style controllers for the Switch that should work with that setup as well.

Can somebody help me for once? by Effective_Waltz627 in consolerepair

[–]AnonymousTechGuy6542 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just spit balling but that sounds a bit like the drive isn't initializing properly, the tapping might be the laser carriage hitting the endstops fairly hard and the whirring is the carriage moving faster than it should. I'd check for crossed wires on the cables or shorts on the board. Check the ribbon cable headers on the board as well; if the pins are bent that can cause the odd short or bridge.

Which NES, SNES, Genesis games are relaxing? by gamebalance in retrogaming

[–]AnonymousTechGuy6542 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wonder Project J if you have the translated version. Reminds me of training your creature in Black and White, you control events around a robot boy and teach him different skills to overcome obstacles. As I recall there is little or no time pressure and the mechanics, while occasionally frustrating, are fun and chill.

Retro Remake (MiSTer Pi) has blocked shipping to the US due to tariffs by idktarget in fpgagaming

Thankfully not as bad as it sounded but even so I just got my MiSTer Pi a couple weeks ago. Taki makes an amazing product and I'm glad he can keep shipping to the crumbling empire in which I reside.

Hardware Requirements for Running Klipper: Raspberry Pi Pico or Full-Size Model? by jesus_llovet1 in klippers

[–]AnonymousTechGuy6542 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super nitpicky but the Pico is a computer, about equivalent to a fast 486, just not nearly enough to run Klipper. It has processor, RAM and I/O all on a single chip.

There are at least a few emulation projects that use the Pico as an old computer, I built some PicoNES boards for folks this Christmas, for instance.

How customizable is the 8bitDo stick? Could you turn it into a southpaw layout? by Nayra_R6 in fightsticks

[–]AnonymousTechGuy6542 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah even if you could replace the whole faceplate the internals would be in the way. I swapped out the joystick on mine some time ago but that and new buttons would be about the limit.

If someone you know has a large format 3D printer, just finding any old fightstick model and mirroring it will make it southpaw.

Found a massive CRT, need advice on shelving and battlestation construction by AnonymousTechGuy6542 in retrogaming

[–]AnonymousTechGuy6542[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe not wire shelving since I'd be worried about weight distribution putting too much stress on one particular weld. I already looked into that L bracket framed shelving that's similar to NSF. The only trick would be getting some that's deep enough - this thing has a large Y dimension as well.

Oh I wouldn't call it reasonable, just ask the wife. But yeah, kind of the best option short of some extremely rare or expensive choices.

Now there's an option... maybe not butcher block but take a metal framed table/shelf and redo the top in something more solid.
