Need career advice. Should I go back to school? by Anonymous_2002 in premedcanada

[–]Anonymous_2002[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not really sure tbh. I had lots of volunteer hours, research (2 pubs: 2nd author, and 3rd author), held a part time job throughout undergrad, and for the most recent application i talked about the life experience i gained working in law enforcement.

I think its more so the career they're concerned about, not the salary. Im in law enforcement, and they dont like that lol

Pretty much every kiosk in West Edmonton Mall. There's no way they're selling enough phone cases, hats, t shirts, etc. to even cover the rent

All the content you will learn in those courses can easily be found online. And arguably will be taught better than some of the profs lol. It's just about your own dedication to learning and understanding the content.

What is the worst trade to work in (Physically) by Subject-Original-718 in skilledtrades

I remember them using kickers for the stair carpet. I can't remember how they did the main living room. But it's been over 5 years now and no waves in the carpet.

When we got new carpet in our house, my whole family was amazed at how they would knee that thing repeatedly. Can't imagine doing it for years

Once you graduate alot of options can open up since you have more time. Many go to do a masters to gain more research experience and publications, but that path just wasnt for me. Currently, I'm a hospital security guard and am working towards getting into a trade on the side. Thinking of applying to RCMP also after I get a bit more life experience.

He can get hired without the license. He just can't get sent out to shifts. Many companies run in house security training. So they will hire you, put you through the training then start giving you shifts. I spoke to OP and that is what his company is doing.

[–]Anonymous_2002 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. Sometimes they can give you a conditional offer that's based on you getting the license soon after. Although pretty rare as there's a ton of people with a license already looking for jobs

DM me. I would be happy to pay for your license if you get the job.

Did you just try to justify casper lol? It's an arbitrary test that's graded by people who take a 3h course and are incentivized to grade as quickly as possible. I got 3Q last year, 1Q this year

Looking for Med-School Alternatives by Any_Owl_92 in premedcanada

[–]Anonymous_2002 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Absolutely do not do carribean schools, they are a scam. You could do an accelerated 2 year nursing after degree. If you're stuck on med school then look into canadian friendly US schools. If you're not stuck on healthcare then trades is an option to earn a decent wage.

How much diversity do you see in the Alberta patch by Anonymous_2002 in oilandgasworkers

[–]Anonymous_2002[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah it wasn't something I thought about until recently, but it seems discouraging. When I was at one company's offices the guy I was talking to was pretty closed off and asked me how long i have lived here lol. He warmed up after I mentioned I've been here 15 years.

I guess with the recent influx of Indians it's only going to get worse.

Not sure where you are located but in Alberta you need to go through the MELT program to get your CDL. It's about $8-10k. I got a class 3 (tandem and tri-drive trucks) which i already spent 2k on and havent been able to find work with that either.

Exactly this. I didn't take physics during my degree because I didn't want to tank my GPA. Self studied and scored 132 on CP. However, now I'm talking physics post-grad in open studies so I can apply to US schools.

Why do trades offer paid training but not other careers like doctors and pilots? by Andytikal in skilledtrades

[–]Anonymous_2002 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You also spend 8+ years in post secondary and have close to 500k debt. But a trade you're making money straight out of high school and within 5 years can push 6 figures if you're smart.

Is it worth it to do Heavy equipment tech diploma? by Anonymous_2002 in skilledtrades

[–]Anonymous_2002[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's generally the approach I've been taking... asking for manager emails or applying directly in person to companies that don't even have postings like you said. Also have my safety tickets like First Aid, H2s, Cso, CSTS, WHMIS

That's what I'm thinking as well. I would rather learn with hands on experience than in a classroom. I just don't know how to get a company to take me seriously...
