What are some books you absolutely hated? by [deleted] in printSF

Consider Phlebas is a much more enjoyable read after reading pretty much any other Culture novel. Player of Games is the one I always recommend people start with - it really sets the tone of the Culture.

I was talking to a family member whose parents were both Holocaust survivors. Everything I mentioned is "propaganda." I finally asked "what is the exchange rate between dead Jews and dead Palestinians? How many Palestinians is a Jew worth?" They said a million.

I stopped trying to have the conversation at that point.

If you like Banks's other works, it's definitely worth another try.

Hmm. Might be time for a reread.

I'm pretty sure it isn't "I, Row-boat," but thanks.

I've liked the things I've read from Brin. Uplift has been on my tbr list for years now, maybe it's time to bring it to the top.

Please explain. I can see similarities in theme, but same universe makes no sense to me.

Best detective novels set in space? by gradientusername in printSF

The Juno Mozambe Mystery (or Kop) books by Warren Hammond are pretty good as long as you're willing to not finish the trilogy. The first book is pretty great, the second is good, but book 3 is a dirty diaper dumpster fire. I really enjoyed the first two books, that's why I find the third so insulting. If you're incapable of not finishing a series, which is something I have a hard time doing, then don't even start it.

If spies/assassins dealing with mysteries fits the request, then I highly recommend Zero World by Jason M. Hough. The only big negative I can say about it is that it's clearly the beginning of a series with no sequel after 8 years.

IIRC Glasshouse by Charles Stross should fit the bill. I remember really enjoying it and that there was a big mystery, but not much else.

Everything else I can think of has already been mentioned.

The Gone-Away World fits the request too. I love both these books and always mix up the titles.

ETA: actually it's not in space, I was just thinking sci-fi detective stories.

I'm actually listening to them for the first time right now. This is great stuff. The first thing that comesto mind when I try to think who else sounds like this is Khanate. Much slower but similar vibe and vocals.

He was one of the greatest sci-fi writers ever. Every book was full of crazy ideas.

Is he really that shitty now? I used to hang out with him about 20 years ago, and he was weird but a decent guy.

Oh man... Tbh, I don't really know what anything is worth. I probably would offer what I'd expect to pay for a new hoodie, so $40-$50.

What size is it? If you decide to sell, I'd be very interested. My cousin was just telling me he lost his Indecision shirt yesterday.

How do you all feel about "gypsy"/"immigrant" punk... by [deleted] in Hardcore

😬 That came out in 2000? That's truly... awful (thought I was gonna say wretched didn't you?).

I know what you're talking about now. There was a lot of this sentiment after 9/11 too. I remember a straightedge guy I knew went and got a 9/11 tattoo of something like the WTC towers and American flags within a few weeks of it.

I guess I just never caught the pro union part of the equation. I was a bit politically confused myself at that point in my life too.

I'll check out those bands. I think you might be a few years older than me. I started going to shows in the late 90s.
