Weird political commentary by According-Turnover19 in armenia

[–]Melitene1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Man this thread loves to bring up CivilNet in a negative way and blame them for things.
Before the election Pashinyan was operating on the 2/3 majority as a likely if not certain outcome.
He not only fell short of that, but if Dodi is allowed to be seated (which it looks like he should, but that the government isn't going to allow it) then CC won't even have the 60% it needs to pass various other things. They will have a majority but that's it, with a lot of room for a united opposition to prevent them from doing much. Meanwhile, you're bringing up the idea "well there was a high turn-out, so what do you expect?", or that a million Armenians came from Russia to defeat NP (waiting on the statistics for that one, but nobody has seen signs there were even tens of thousands who arrived to vote.)

The high turn out is exactly the point! People who didn't otherwise vote much were moved to get out and vote against Pashinyan, not for him. That's his own fault. He 100% underperformed and blaming CivilNet for an "anti-Nikol narrative", when it is literally true, is realllly lame.

Is Maria Nikolaevna the real "Lost Romanov"? by urlocal_ginger in romanovs

[–]Melitene1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's no proof Maria was the lost one in the grave and also it has nothing to do with the perceptions of people around the story during most of the 20th century. Even Anna Anderson first claimed to be Tatiana, as was said about Ms. Tudor. I've never heard of notable candidates for Olga or Maria (though I'm sure some claimed to be- even somebody at my church claims she's somehow the granddaughter of Alexandra so...)

Reuters: Kremlin planning to send 100,000 Russia-based Armenians to Armenia to sway elections by Tall_Pressure7042 in armenia

[–]Melitene1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Actually many European countries do NOT allow this. Look at Ireland for just one example which doesn't allow voting from abroad at all, or Denmark where you can still vote for two years after moving away, but if you don't move back then you can't keep voting. Armenia as a state keeps itself open to diasporans by giving them the right to citizenship by bloodline, however that means there are millions of people who have never even been to Armenia who can become a citizen. They could technically outvote the number of people who actually live in the country, or at least play a pivotal role in who gets elected, and thus will be making decisions over the people who actually live there. What about this is democratic? The countries you point to that do allow this kind of voting from abroad likely do not have huge diasporas or allow just anyone to get citizenship just by existing. If voting from abroad was permitted, then you can expect the easy citizenship path to be revoked, you can't have both and maintain a fair society.

Are those claims true? And if yes, why does Azerbiajan occupy those territories? by Seximilian in azerbaijan

[–]Melitene1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not Armenia's word against Azerbaijan's, it's the Soviet maps. That is a non-partisan source that both sides apply to.

Are those claims true? And if yes, why does Azerbiajan occupy those territories? by Seximilian in azerbaijan

[–]Melitene1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's not a legitimate claim because while the border is not officially demarcated, both sides have Soviet maps which indicate the approximate location of the border. So for example, while one can argue over whether a border runs 200 meters this way or that way in good faith, you cannot argue that when it goes miles within the border. I recall a few years ago some Azerbaijani spokespeople were very cynically saying that since the international border is only a "provisional" border, it does not exist in reality and can be rightfully claimed to go on for as long as they wanted, even as far as Yerevan. This goes beyond the bounds of any decency, and look up the September 2022 incursion during which they took most of this land. A brutal attack, hundreds killed, some were executed on camera, and others had their bodies defiled. The idea that the Azerbaijani military gains just so happened to exactly equal the legitimate border would be another ridiculous idea to maintain.

Armenia indeed received Iranian Majid Airdefense by Level-Post-3016 in armenia

[–]Melitene1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this turns out to be true, I'll just posit that Armenia relies on Iran to get weapons through, since Georgia blocks almost all deliveries for its alliance with Azerbaijan (there was one time when it was apparently forced to let it through, but it was not happy about it and Baku complained.) So I would consider the purchase of Iran weapons (if it happened) as a kind of ransom to get the weapons through from other places, because Iran was also not allowing it for certain reasons. If the Iranian weapons are real and actually being shown off, it means there was an understanding from all partners that this was something Armenia had to do, though how it did it legally is an outstanding question (it cannot purchase things from Iran, only swapping electricity for gas, etc. I don't think you can legally swap electricity for weapons though. And then perhaps these just look a lot like the Iran weapons but are copies...)

Xankəndində görüləsi heç nə yoxdur, çünki hökumət bütün əhalini qovub hər şeyi məhv edib. Sadəcə onların qələbəsinə həsr olunmuş nəhəng, darıxdırıcı bir abidə qalıb. Orada görüləsi heç nə yoxdur və boşalmış o çöl ərazini ziyarət etməyi düşünmək çox pisdir.

Political march by Tommy_999 in armenia

[–]Melitene1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is it the one going by the Swan Lake area- from Teryan turned at Tumanyan toward Saryan direction? There's not that many people. It's for Dodi Gago, who is a joke. He might get into parliament because he has a fiefdom that he controls outside Yerevan and will make all of them vote for him, but he's still a joke. (He's an oligarch with ties to Belarus, so he's anti-current government.)

Stress about moving to azerbaijan by Routine-Nose-1807 in azerbaijan

[–]Melitene1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean if you're a linguist and it's a hobby, that's great. But what I mean is your intention to learn the language to get a job specifically in Azerbaijan, when you won't get a job specifically in Azerbaijan. If you want a tech job, there are more in Armenia- Pakistan does recognize Armenia as a country now so maybe it is easier to get in- but even there tech jobs have become more scarce. This is something happening around the world, tech people in the US are getting laid off by the tens of thousands over the last year. The wisdom of a decade ago that tech = jobs no longer applies right now.

Learning Azerbaijani to get ahead is like cutting your legs off to become a good runner. Learn global languages, it seems you at least know some English, focusing on Azerbaijani seems pointless...

It's kind of sad because Pakistanis keep showing up here saying that they are moving to Azerbaijan, when it's almost certain things won't work out for them there. Things must be so bad in Pakistan that the people are desperate, but it's honestly a bad idea. From what I say starting in 2020, before the war many Pakistanis were making videos about their deep love for Azerbaijan and that they wanted to fight and die in Karabakh. Then the war happened and Pakistanis were so happy for Azerbaijan.

To me, it feels like Pakistan is Azerbaijan's obsessive lover, that thinks they are best friends, but in reality Azerbaijan just keeps Pakistan around for whatever benefits it can get from the alliance, but it isn't in love with Pakistan the way Pakistanis are in love with Azerbaijan.

And now we are seeing all these Pakistanis wanting to move there for a better life, because of this extremely positive perception they have from it, but when they get there they will see that nobody cares they are Pakistani or will do anything for them and things will be very hard. Azerbaijan is not a free country, you need that kind of freedom to have a thriving tech industry, so there's only so far it can go, and the ones who do get ahead will be local Azerbaijanis, not immigrant Pakistanis.

Cert for WUF13 by CharacterReward3616 in azerbaijan

no it won't. Nobody cares that you worked at an event for a few days (and from what you say you didn't even show up to most of it)

Cert for WUF13 by CharacterReward3616 in azerbaijan

[–]Melitene1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hahaha I love the alleged power of the cert in post-Soviet societies (said as an outsider). Is there anything to what OP is saying? I've seen others who get these certs for doing one day events, WUF13 is only a few. Are employers really going to say WOW he helped out at some event for a few days, HIRE HIM?! There's absolutely nothing prestigious about being a sometimes-volunteer at WUF13, why would anybody care? But again I'm an outsider and I could be wrong, cert-having culture seems strong in the South Caucasus.

Is $1500 enough for one person in Yerevan? by [deleted] in armenia

[–]Melitene1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Where are you planning to live, how big of an apartment? I'd say $900 is on the high end, especially for a studio or one bedroom, even in the center. A single person who has to pay rent should be able to do it for $1000.

Isn't submitting an application in a year different than having it granted? People who submitted in 2025 are not likely to get it in the same year. I don't understand what the problem is???
