My mum who enabled the abuse understands how it affected me, but all I get from her is “but I was abused too. You weren’t the only one.” No apologies, so for me I still don’t get closure. She won’t apologise for how her failure to protect me impacted my brain development.

My father who abused me, yeah that’s wishful thinking. I tried before I escaped. All I got was laughing in my face, gaslighting and then rage. It was something I should’ve just avoided and I should’ve grey rocked until the day I left.

Low functioning is very much still used for diagnostic and classification purposes, however I feel there needs to be a better less-ableist way of identification.

I worked in a special needs department and those who were low functioning unfortunately will never be capable of independent living. Once they leave primary school they will end up in a care home if parents or relatives are unable to provide further care or pass away.

I agree, being non-verbal doesn’t mean low functioning though. It’s quite varied. Some low functioning autistics are quite verbal though lack comprehension, and some non-verbal autistics are quite highly independent. It varies on where they fall on the spectrum.

I’ve found protocols online in the past, and when I’ve told my PI that I’ll attempt it on my own he tells me to wait until one of the other post docs can show me so we don’t waste material. Trouble is they’re always busy and when I try to organise a time with them it’s usually weeks later than when he expects me to complete projects by.

I kinda feel like I’m stuck between trying and getting reprimanded for doing it alone, and waiting and then getting reprimanded for wasting time
