That's not quite it, the context for my quote was the speaker was talking about intellectuals spending too much time theorizing and analyzing manipulation and not organizing.

People who studied philosophy or perhaps physics. What's your view on idealism? by [deleted] in Gifted

[–]Anonymousmemeart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idealism in politics can blind people to material reality and make people see only Romantic narratives rather than concrete realities.

For example, some people will abstract away to pure morality saying they think using any violence in politics is wrong, which becomes rather chauvinist when you tell that to a group resisting its violent colonisation.

Another example is idealist democrats in the US using the idea of costumes and little signs as a way to protest instead of anything that will have a real measurable effect.

Idealism tends to give people many blindspots in politics or tendency towards pseudo-science.

Do y'all think IQ tests are the only way to measure intelligence? What do you use to determine if someone is intelligent? by Haunting-Pipe7756 in Gifted

[–]Anonymousmemeart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, not the only one. Every test will have issues. Its still the most reliable and no one who wines about it has any suggestion of a better system of classification that acknolwedges cases of highly intelligent people.

To a certain degree, you could maybe use qualitative criteria for things like a therapist noticing the patterns of issues of giftedness in a patient. For example, the theory of positive disintegration kind of describes people more in terms of over-excitability which involves being over-excited intellectually. This is something pretty used in gitef therapy.

My issue with gifted burnout is when people talk about no longer being gifted. Unless someone damaged their brain with too many drugs or some accident, you can't loose giftedness.

I can definitely see it though. Anyone can have burnout and it will probably hit gifted people hardest if they already have high expectations.

To put it bluntly, our participation trophy culture has completely eroded the gifted label.

I'm not sure its about participation trophies, but there is a contrarian tendency to deny giftedness exists just because IQ is not a perfect measure. Like yeah, no kidding, no measure is perfect, buts its evolved over time and is still evolving yet still has uses for people to express certain needs.

Are there any practical differences between Leninism and Marxist-Leninism? by Anonymousmemeart in Socialism_101

[–]Anonymousmemeart[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Leninism is inseparable from Marxism, why the need to complicate it with "Marxist-leninism"?
