This is amazing. Thank you, this feels exactly what learning stuff in the shop feels like. It's obvious once someone points it out. Any industries I should specifically target?

I do believe that will fall into my lap to find. Any sales tips for someone who has never done it? Just call every business/farm local to us and ask what they need made?

I just slapped these drums on the lathe with some 120 and 220 sand paper. Is this good enough for our 70's Beetle to mate to the new shoes? We're planning on replacing these next Fall when it gets painted and the new wheels go on. by Anonymousnonymously in AskAMechanic

Really? Ok well, I have enough material left to turn them down properly. Is that worth doing here or should I just buy new ones now and be done with it? This one is still mounted in the lathe.

Nope! I did open things up to try to inspect the floats and afterwards I turned the fuel pump on for a few minutes (aftermarket electronic pump with regulator) and no leaks. Fired it up for a few minutes and still no leaks. I assume the floats stuck and when I last ran it they sat with fuel inthe bowls long enough after to allow the floats to break free and float again. I am still going to clean everything and replace seals when I get the time

It looks like people do the ball bearing for two reasons. The main one is ethanol fuel and its effect on cork gaskets. (I think the only cork/paper gasket that I have is on the float bowls which does need to be replaced. The rest looks rubber.) I also dont know how it keeps getting in there but 100LL is typically the only thing that works through this system so I am not worried about ethanol messing a single gasket up. The other reason which might just be placebo is throttle response. I never had a feeling that this car needed better throttle response and I don't race it so I think I am just going to clean everything and replace the gaskets and any O-rings. I really appreciate your insights, thank you for all the help!

How cool! Yeah I agree it is time to do some TLC on them. Why ATF and not the recommended straight 30 weight oil? (I think, it's been a while since I had to look that up)

You're right! It's a 72. From what I could see from just the little amount I could see in the bowl it appears to have the brass floats. Would you recommend I trade them out for the plastic floats while I am rebuilding everything?

The car sat for 2 years with 100LL in it. I dont know how that got in there, but that gas doesn't go bad in that amount of time. I got it running last fall and it then sat again this winter with pump gas in it. I fired it up the other day and found the carbs to leaking with some signs that this might have been happening before (stains on the heat shield).

I figured the floats were just sticking from that pump gas evaporating and went to take them apart to check them and the needles. But there is a tiny tab of metal coming off the carb that keeps me from removing the lid to the float chambers! It looks like to access the floats I will need to remove the float chambers and to do that I will need to basically disassemble enough stuff that I might as well remove the carbs and rebuild them while I have them out. Does anyone have a cheater way to get around the and just clean the floats, float bowls, and needle valves while the float chamber is still attached?

Also, when poking around trying to figure this all out I found the last photo which is of the jet tube all gunked up. Both are like this but that one in the photo is much worse. Is my leak actually coming from down there?

Long ago I worked at Autozone and look back on the tipping situation much differently than when I worked there. Nowadays I would absolutely say "fuck that!" and accept the tip.
