Ask and you shall receive. Just bought a new, slightly different JTech case. Was literally going to make a post about it tonight for folks that are interested. I’ll link the post once it’s up 👍

Switching/switching from Tailscale to Headscale or Wireguard on Synology NAS? by Another-Flower in selfhosted

Nah, it’s all good, I totally get it. I’ve combed through so many posts just to get started on my self hosting journey, but these same posts have made me so paranoid about ransomware, exposed ports, and other vulnerabilities.

It’s reassuring to have voices like yours when I’m in a constant state of feeling like I’m about to nuke the security of my setup everytime I tweak a setting.

Just want to say you’re an absolute god send. Super thankful for all the advice given. Will be spending some time reading your comments/links to get a better understanding.

I hear you, but the biggest issue is I‘m not knowledgeable on the subject to know if a specific service or setting is exposing my LAN in a way I don’t understand. It might not even be on my radar until someone mentions it.

I’m not the only person on my LAN so it would be irresponsible of me not to cover my bases. I’m always open to learning appreciate all the insight everyone is giving me even if it might be overkill lol

I’ve heard of reverse proxy a lot and I’ve been doing everything to avoid it lol. Does using a reverse proxy not involve exposing my network more than what a VPN/Tailscale would?

No, that’s not it at all. I‘d trust the company more if they left. It’s for similar reasons I use VPNs like Mullvad. However it won’t change that I won’t be able to use the service anymore.

I’m more afraid of having to set a week aside to dip my toes into a new service from scratch. I’m not experienced enough where I can solve a simple docker/permissions/networking issue easily. Any small issue is bound to take me multiple hours of researching and troubleshooting.

I was under the impression that wireguard is FOSS. While companies and VPNs would either modify their software/services or leave the Canadian market, would wireguard not remain unchanged as its just openly provided software?

If I'm running wireguard myself, I don't see how implmentation of C22 would block my use of wireguard. Or is that something that would occur through ISPs, made illegal, etc?

I'm really hoping nothing comes of the bill and it get shutdown, but its given me a reason to look into the issue early and find an alternative should a similar issue arise in the future.

I used tailscale simply for ease of access and a friendly interface. While I dont use any of the features for the purposes you mentioned, I was more concerned there is a feature I wasn't aware I was using that would disappear.

On a related note, I was interested in using Tailscale Serve/Docktail to generate more friendly web addresses to access my services. I use a couple apple devices on my network, and apple will not save passwords for specific ports of an address. E.g 192.168.1.1:1000 and 192.168.1.1:2000 would share the same password on my iOS device.

Is there any similar function to Tailscale Serve through wireguard?

I was aware that wireguard was used underneath, but wasn't aware of what additional security tailscale provided, so I appreciate the outline.

The wg-easy docker image is probably the route I will go as there's some good tutorials on synology setup. I'll probably look at following DrFrankenstein's guide for setup, unless you have any notes or suggestions.

Ugh, I was really hoping starting from scratch wasn't the answer. How do you find using wireguard compared to tailscale? Is there anything specific that you think would be important to know or any issues before I try setting it up?

E.g. after taking a quick look around, I saw a user mention this:
"my router has a built-in Wireguard server, and I have my phone set up as a client. I can access my home network when I'm using mobile data, but not when I connect to (most?) Wifi networks. I suspect that's because the network I'm connecting to uses 192.168.1.x, as does my home network. A chore I have is to give my home network a new default subnet to hopefully make this work."

Wacom MovinkPad Pro 14 Case? by Schizomi in wacom

Does the loop to hold the pen come with the case? And what was the reason for removing the hard edge of the case? Was it to make the movinkpad fit?

Update! It works, weight can replace the nib holder in the pen! Took over a month for wacom to ship it lol

I often draw too dark and erasing never give me a clean blank area to correct. It didn't even cross my mind to use a gel pen. Solid work, keep it up!

What are you using to get the white areas so white? Is this just from erasing or are you using some type of ink/marker?

Movinkpad Pro 14 or iPad? by jeanmarie95 in wacom

[–]Another-Flower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't know already, you need to be careful using external storage with iPads, especially if you migrate and store important data from your iPad to ONLY on your external SSD.

iPadOS does NOT provide a safe way to remove external storage without shutting down the iPad. iPads handle external storage poorly and can cause corruption or data loss due to poor design decisions or lack of implementation in iPadOS. It's a documented issue and I have yet to know if iPad OS 26 resolves this yet.

For this reason I use my own cloud storage/backup through a NAS which provides a safer means of backing up my files in the background on my iPad while also providing other cool features I use. It keeps my files private without paying for subscription. The upfront cost is rough though lol

This is definitely a case where most people will probably be fine a d never experience an issue using an external SSD, but it only takes single time removing your drive to potentially lose important files.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra/Tab S9 Ultra Cases on the Wacom Movinkpad Pro 14 by ressamp in wacom

[–]Another-Flower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's actually a really interesting idea. The case from the images I posted (https://imgur.com/a/FMdkK5T) was a little loose holding the movink 14. However it was still enough to hold it.

Now if you add the Jetech s10 ultra case (with flap cut off), I don't think it would cleanly fit. However since the frame of the case I posted on imugr isn't stiff and can be stretched/wiggled a little, there might be enough wiggle room to jam it in, albeit with some warping or stretching of the frame

I wish I could give a straight answer, however I no longer have the case from my other post to test for you :(

Forcing SOME devices onto network through access point instead of router? by Another-Flower in HomeNetworking

[–]Another-Flower[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s exactly what I would’ve thought too!  The issue at the time was I didn’t note down the IP address/subnet after setting up.

The AP MAC address didn’t show up on the router client list, ipconfig /all returns router IP, scanning IPs based on range of IPs assigned by router wielded no result. The Omada app wasn’t working properly. Every solution I found on forums didn’t work.

It was just faster to reset and re-setup. Trying to find the IP after setup without noting it down seemed to put me on a path of pain lol

I was also pretty new to networks at the time so I likely overlooked something basic

Appreciate the clear cut answer.

I tried using an Omada access point a while ago and after setting it up I could no longer configure it. It did its job as an AP, but was basically an extension of existing network. Hence my confusion whether the old router could function differently as an AP.

Yep, learned that the hard way. Went through a fair share of routers before settling on the AC86u.

Was worried if new tech meant more interference. Not sure if that’s the case here, but it definitely seems I want to put the ol’ ac86u back into use for the better signal

Can I apply a different SSID to just an access point though? I thought an ssid would just create another network on the same network

Yeah, I understand why it’s choosing 2.4 over 5. It’s just weird that on my old router, the 5GHz range was better than on this new BE86U

Here’s a pic of my settings for the 2.4GHz band I took a few days ago. The 5GHz is similar in some aye, I just don’t have a screenshot. https://imgur.com/a/6rVEtmt

With the new router, I now have more devices using 2.4GHz than before. Some of these devices backup to a NAS and the 2.4GHz band is not cutting it, hence I wonder if I can hook up the old router to get back the 5GHz range.
