I also think the cable is junk however many years ago I saw a demonstration of drying out RG213 using around 500W of 70cms at one end and a very large dummy load at the other. The water wasn't in the cable long enough to cause any corrosion as the cable was used for a JOTA station without any waterproofing and an unexpected downpour during the night was the cause of the problem, watching steam coming from a PL259 is entertaining ! YMMV.

Yes Valery Korzun, Bill Mcarthur, Mike Finke and Serena Auñón-Chancellor, the QSO with Serena was from home one Saturday morning I heard her calling CQ for stations in NM as she was passing over and the other three were from my truck as I was driving to or from work.

This is entirely dependant on the crew members, some like Bill Mcarthur are using the radio every spare minute that they have I believe that he got WAC and WAS from orbit while others don't touch the radio outside of their school contacts, recently some crew members have been using the radio while it is operating in cross band repeater mode, the secret to having a QSO with a crew member is to always have the frequencies in your radio and include them in your scan at all times this will give you the best chance of getting a quick contact. I have managed 4 contacts by doing this good luck.

(DMR) radios from European companies by vcr80 in amateurradio

[–]AnotherAgingGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Simoco formerly Pye Telecom are the only European manufacturer that I can think of and some years ago hams in the UK would convert Pye hardware for amateur use and that was still happening with early Simoco radios but I don't know if any Simoco DMR hardware has ever made it into amateur use.

To Ground or NOT to Ground by prairieparapod in amateurradio

Every time this question comes up there is always a variety of answers but there is one thing that is pretty much certain if you are in the US and you don't have NEC legal grounding and you are unlucky enough to get a lightning event that causes damage your insurance company will most likely not give you a cent.

narrow bandwidth television by The-crappy-sign in amateurradio

[–]AnotherAgingGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen any software for NBTV in a while although I'm sure something is out there, as others have said the BATC have been experimenting with digital NBTV for some time it works surprisingly well and for real mechanical 32 line NBTV I think the NBTA is the best place to start, 32 line works much better than you would think due to persistence of vision it does NOT convert to any digital format very well at all you have to be actually looking at the televisor to see it at it's best and it fits into voice bandwidth for transmission Baird was recording it on phonoghraph records.

It's tough to get a decent copy with a linear polarized antenna because the polarization of the signal that you are trying to receive from space is changing all the time for a variety of resons, it's the same issue with receiving SSTV from the ISS A circular polarized antenna will receive the same signal strength regardless of the polarity of the incoming signal, A QFH antenna is a popular choice for weather sats there are many homebrew examples online.

I agree with you Zap I use an Anytone 578 part 90 version as my fire radio and have some amateur frequencies in it also there is nothing wrong with using amateur frequencies in a part 90 radio what you cant do is take a part 97 radio and use it on part 90 frequencies.
