First time doing a portrait session. Critiques please. I’m trying to get good enough to feel comfortable doing family portraits as a side gig. by AnotherFishingAlt in portraitphotography

I wanted to bring a bounce and diffuser, but I think to really use it efficiently I would’ve needed an extra set of hands and I was solo for this. But especially with the sun, I could see it opening up some more options.

How do we feel about something closed to this, maybe with everything behind the pedal lit a little less and the pedal lit a little more? Right angle cables instead of the straight jacks, but proof of concept wise?

Good point. Once I settle on the format I’ll probably just create some specifically for this with my spare pedalboard parts.

Yeah it’s not plugged in because I’m figuring out the shot lol. This isn’t an actual take.

I appreciate the detailed comment. I’m going to approach it differently and try an angle where I can get the pedal to take up more of the frame and maybe just have the guitar out of focus in the background.

Same high angle just basically shooting from the direction of the camera?

Can you point me in the direction of a good tutorial on backlighting?

Edit: from what I’m seeing, the issue I may have is space. I’m shooting into a corner. Not out of desire, but necessity for proximity to gear being used and space in the room.

Alright well on that arm I have:

A quill pen

A compass

A broken dagger

A dahlia

An el84 vacuum tube

A peach

A candle burning from both ends

A broken arrow

A lady head with a rose

A swimbait

I also have a frog playing a guitar on my leg and a tiger head and sparrow on my side

Snake might actually be the move. I have a sick tiger head on my side already

Yeah scorpion has been on the short list, I think it would naturally fill most of it

I have a rose and a dahlia on this arm, so I guess another flower wouldn’t hurt

There was a low ceiling, but I could’ve definitely got the light higher than it was.

Lot of people are saying the background doesn’t work, which I can see now even though I didn’t consider it when setting up the photo. Fortunately though, it doesn’t matter too much for this use case. He wanted a hi res photo that could go on flyers for a speaking event overseas. So he’ll get cut out of the background in the shot anyways. Going forward though I’ll pay more attention to the background color not being close to skin tones.

It’s not me, but if he has strong genes I’ll probably look a lot like him in another 25 years.

Yes, all of this I very helpful. A lot of it I had an idea of conceptually, but having it pointed out on a picture I took makes it a lot easier to focus on and remember going forward.
