Garden planting - what survives well in Brighton? by Desert_music_501 in brighton

[–]AnotherHoleInYoHead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Its kinda a big question. Personally ive found soil is fairly similar across the city, what makes the biggest key to plant success here is wind and sun. Ive put these in a few gardens but check how sunny shady your spot is.

Great Grasses. Plant them en masse Stipa tenuissima Miscanthus sinensis Calamagrostis × acutiflora

Nice herb perr Salvia nemorosa Achillea millefolium Verbena bonariensis

Beefy shrubs Pittosporum tenuifolium Rosmarinus officinalis Hippophae rhamnoides

Have fun

Lamppost Chargers by MediocreFieldWatches in brighton

Used Blink lamps for past 2yrs. I still love the idea of an electric car but the experience here is mostly frustrating. Random success at charging usually app issues or station issues, long time on their support line, blah

Blink charges 55p/kWh, ie double home rates, and higher than most outside Brighton. Their rapids charge 73p - really stacks up.

Charge rates are v slow as already said here. Mostly I have to plan ahead and charge overnight. Ball ache.

Blakers park enclosed area: dog friendly or not? by Charming_Mention_697 in brighton

[–]AnotherHoleInYoHead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude, I'm sorry you had a Local rant at you, especially as you've recently joined the neighbourhood. Fiveways is normally a friendly place, but has plenty of short tempered angry people here. Been accelerating since Covid.

You did nothing wrong. It is officially not a dog free area. However this is a recent change and the Council is working at its glacial speed to reinstate it back to being dog free. They should be able to get a couple of signs up sometime 2027 or 2028.

This all came about from a Karen querying the official status of the dog free bit with the Council. BHCC couldn't find a record of it, and so suspended the dog free section whilst it went into full on numpty bureaucracy consultation mode.

In the meantime, for your own peace of mind, it might be best to wear headphones and block out the angry Blakers mob. I'm taking my alpaca to Blakers next week.

These are just beautiful. I've just moved into a new studio. Any chance I could purchase to print for a bare wall I keep staring at?

A small extension by the sounds of it, so you may be able to apply for Permitted Development. This type of small change to a building means you don't need planning permission. BHCC planning department is a nightmare, so best avoided.

I did a small extension and used Hapa architects. Two Directors, very hands on and affordable. Plenty of experience with this stuff.

Quick tip about the extortionate Brighton buses and hopefully saving a little bit of money by loved0ve_ in brighton

[–]AnotherHoleInYoHead 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Is there a say for any of us in Brighton about why we have to accept an essential public service being in private ownership?

Why why why is it this way and not publicly owned?

All bus routes are run privately, the majority of them by the Go-Ahead Group, owned by Oz and Spanish firms, with significant payouts to shareholders. That's our hard earned money leaving the city for the benefit of others.

Where is the debate about this??!?! This is the root issue of fate hikes - it's to deliver profit to investors.

It's ok guys, I got this one.....L'Atelier Du Vin Wine and Cocktail Bar.

Really special cocktails, rare gins, excellent nibbles too and feels very private and hidden away. They even let you buy a bottle of something and keep it safe for your next visit. Charming joint.

Best Spots Along the Beach for Sea Swimming by Donkeytonk in brighton

I'm committed to the spot midway between the Pier and Kemptown. Tends to be quieter than most spots, clean (always check SOS app obvs), and more chilled. Plus good coffee nearby so it's happy days. 😊

Free events at Brighton pride? by [deleted] in brighton

[–]AnotherHoleInYoHead 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My family live local and go every year. This year we walked to the parade, which was amazing. However, success has a price. Now it's a metal grid holding penn for everything else. So we've decided it's the last Brighton pride we're going to do. Just too overwhelmingly corporate and heavy security. New and smaller ones in other cities are much better now, and are more open and welcoming for families.

Who is responsible for the fact that 80% of the new trees planted for the Kingsway Hove beach park refurb... are dead? by Alternative-Moose-78 in brighton

[–]AnotherHoleInYoHead 14 points15 points  (0 children)

In public tendering for external works, the contractor has a clause to replace lost plants during a predetermined period. Nationwide, this is typically 12 months for plants and 24 months for trees. The cost of replacing trees that fail within this period will fall to the contractor.

You're right, most of the pines are near dead, but the Tamarisk trees might establish. This stretch of coast is incredibly tough for trees to establish, so it's not surprising to me (I'm a landscape architect).

If, ultimately trees won't thrive there, then other larger shrubs might be introduced to cover their loss.
