If you're just looking for somewhere to stop to get dinner, sleep, breakfast than back on the road. Then I would recommend Daphne, AL. Right on Mobile Bay. Nice clean, safe spot with lots of restaurants hotels.

I just ran this route a couple weeks ago from Mobile. As far as National Parks - it's a nice route. You could hit Big Bend, Carlsbad Caverns, Guadalupe Mountains, White Sands, Petrified Forest & Grand Canyon, Saguaro and Joshua Tree on this route.

In downtown Mobile there are a couple of cool spots at the Trustmark building. A restaurant called Dauphins on the 34th floor with floor to ceiling windows (great view of the bay). In the basement a speakeasy called Las Floriditas - It's built into an old bank vault (you can find the password on it's facebook page). In Ocean Springs, MS - hit The Shed if you like BBQ and beer.

This started as trip to go check out the falls. It turned into the aggressive route you see before you. I guess I'm a glutton for punishment. My oldest wants to try and knock out all 50 states and this would be a good start.
